Tom Mitchell, Tight End for the Colts and more importantly to me, owner of Tom Mitchell's Golf Gridiron (http://www.mitchellsgolf.com/). Chester Bennington of Linkin Park (The screamo voice of the group. Mike Shinoda is the other singer.) hanged himself.

Feel bad for his family, but if this means no more Linkin Park is inflicted on people, then at least some good comes out of it.

Him and Chris Cornell were really close. Today is Chris's birthday. Chester sang Hallelujah at his funeral. Oooof.

Sam Shepard, actor and playwright.

I remember reading one of Shepard's plays in high school and it was some surprisingly dark shit in contrast to the likeable everyman roles he tended to play on screen.

I'd argue Shepard deserves his own thread but I'll just say he was arguably the greatest living playwrights (when he was alive) which is no small feat, but when you factor in what an incredible actor he was as well...

I don't even think I knew that the famous playwright Sam Shepard and the Guy-Who-Played-Chuck-Yeager Sam Shepard were the same person.

Then again, I always got the guys from The Right Stuff all mixed up. You had actors named Shepard, Glenn, and Scott, and characters named Shepard, Glenn, and Scott (Carpenter).

You know what's a really underrated movie I haven't thought of in a long time is Thunderheart. Great performances from Val Kilmer and Sam Shepard.

The only thing I remember from this movie is the quote
"I have said it and it has been said"..
and I am not entirely sure that quote is actually in the movie.

I saw him once or twice in restaurants in Charlottesville when I was a kid. Of course, I wouldn't have known him, but my mom pointed him out. Looking over his filmography, I've seen very few of his films (that I can recall). The Right Stuff is a huge hole in my watched movies list.

So Yeager has now outlived:

1. All of the Mercury 7
2. Crossfield
3. Half the guys that walked on the moon
4. The guy that played him in the movie
5. All of us, eventually

I had no idea Chuck Yeager was still alive. I would have lost some money if offered that bet.

Glen Campbell

I can still sing "Rhinestone Cowboy" in its entirety. He had a few good tunes back in the day.

I was going to post him in the "guys you are surprised are still alive" thread.

Too obscure? Damn, tough crowd.

Incredible vocal talent, wonderful guitarist, a long string of hits, cornball TV star, tabloid fodder due to his legendary drug and alcohol habit, and his being a real sunnavabitch, alternating with being a great guy to friends, family and fellow musicians.

The documentary film chronicling his decent into Alzheimers as he mounted one last live tour is well worth watching, Glen Campbell - I'll Be Me (link to trailer)

I am partial to his album of duets with Bobbie Gentry, and the one with Jimmy Webb, who wrote three of Campbell absolute best, Phoenix/Galveston/Wichita.

The man made 70 albums in his 50 year career. His voice remained golden even to the final two LPs, from 2011 and 2012 (the last one, Adios, released earlier this summer) despite being quite ill. You can drop the needle anywhere in his vast repertoire and hear work of a fantastic artist. But start with Phoenix/Galveston/Wichita.

There is a huge pile of good reasons for old farts my age and older making a fuss over his passing. Had he made only one record in his lifetime, he would be worthy of great acclaim. If it was this record (with The Wrecking Crew in full effect):
