Also in that new music vein, Metric changing the sound up again. This is way more in the style of Live It Out and Fantasies. Super excited to hear the whole record.

Metric is very high on my list of bands I like in theory more than in actuality.

They certainly have a lot of different sounds based on the album you're listening to

That might even be part of it. For the most part, I don't like bands changing up from whatever first caught me.

Brian, what do you think is/are the best/most accessible Lucero album(s)? I've listened to them some, but not a whole lot. They fit into the broadly-described genres I like, so I'd like to go deeper.

You didn't ask me, but Women & Work is the one that turned me onto them. "On My Way Downtown" is still one of my most jammed tunes.

There's probably not a bad one really but it kind of depends. Their sound has changed and evolved a bit over the years, but hasn't strayed too much from alt-country/Americana. If I were you I'd start with something older (but not their first two albums, though they're also pretty good), so start with Tennessee or That Much Further West. That gives you the punk/country/rock ethos and then from there maybe to Women & Work and/or 1372 Overton Park which are the first two albums that added the Memphis/Stax horns. If you're still on board you can go all over the map from there to their earlier stuff which is a little punkier to their newer stuff which is a little more "produced".

ETA: Personally, my personal two favorite Lucero albums are Tennessee and 1372 Overton Park, but like any parent I love all of them for different reasons.

I'm sure I've posted this before, but it just blows me away how friggin great this is. The songwriting, the singing, the playing. Masterful.

(The original is the greatest album of all time - in this man's opinion.)

Both the new Lucero and Amanda Shires out today are very worthy of your time. The new Lucero album is their best since Women & Work or maybe even 1372 Overton Park for my money. Because I'm an asshole who worries about this stuff I was a little nervous about Ben Nichols getting married and having a kid, but it hasn't affected his songwriting.

It’s nice to see someone go to those depths to describe Lucero. Ben Nichols has self-effacedly described their music as 60 songs about women, 30 songs about drinking and 3 songs about my grandpa but it goes a lot deeper than that. If you want to know the one person on the planet I would most crushed to learn is a Trump supporter it’s Ben Nichols and there’s not a close #2

Just in time to answer SC's question, Ben Nichols ranks Lucero's 8 studio albums prior to Among The Ghosts.

Surprisingly, I pretty much agree with his rankings and his reasoning behind them, which is a little rare for me.

Random person who knows I love DMB: Don't you wish you were on that boat that got covered in DMB's shit?
Me: So you're into weird stuff, huh?

I forgot I posted this the other night but I haven't really moved off it. There was something really tedious about it, like even the songs I knew and liked I was done with after a minute and wanted to hear what was next. And something reminded me of Bruce Hornsby.

I was watching something the other day and Rod Stewart's "Young Hearts" came on and damn if I wouldn't have guessed it was The War on Drugs if I didn't know any better.

I didn't mean mine as anything but. I've long heard the influence of that time in their work and they're one of my favorite bands at the moment.

Re: Getting the spins

I did a little googling of "war on drugs" "sound like" and there's a lot of Dire Straits comps too, which are right. One I missed but I get now that I've read it is Wilco and its basically the same way I feel about them; nice sound but I'm bored after a couple songs of same-ness. So basically War on Drugs is just 20 years from now when artists don't exist but people can engineer new music by creating an amalgamation of old bands.

(But Mister D, all new music is at some level a sum of its influences! Shut up, guys. Its too early for this and you know what I mean.)
