That is indeed brutal. I assume that reviewer masturbates to Lester Bangs pics.

Heh. Yeah, that is exactly the way Lester Bangs would have written about them, too. Lester cared about passion and originality above all else.

Clearly they are extremely derivative, almost a tribute band. And, about the millionth band to write stupid pretend-intellectual lyrics. But, as counter-point to the reviewer's histrionics, much of rock is/was derivative and ripping off somebody else. So what if they don't bring any superstar technical talent? The kids want to see pretty kids playing the music they like, not old-timers like us even if they are better at it. And a certain segment of kids who like melodic hard rock have been dying for a band this ever since GnR faded away, even if it isn't original. Reviewers always have had a tendency to stake their opinions on ground where the band's fans don't even care.

I think the reviewer's histrionics are better pointed towards the record label: they're no longer looking to grease cookie sheets at radio stations, and they've moved on to gaming streaming algorithms.

You'll hear more about this phenomena in the future.

The review does mention that but that doesn’t let a shitty band off the hook.

Nor should it. But this is the start of something much bigger than Greta Van Fleet.

Should go in "Brushes With" thread, but I had a lovely dinner with Margo Timmins and her husband last summer. She's great, much livelier than her music would have you believe.

And I just heard this foot stomper...

So, what's the story on your Dinner With Margo?

Golf weekend up north - friend of a friend of mine lives up there during the summer with his wife the lovely and talented Margo Timmins. So after golf, she met us for drinks and dinner in Thornbury. Just a sweet, fun middle aged gal.

It’s a long story but overhearing a huge pro-Trump asshole Republican ripping Toby Keith up and down for being the worlds biggest asshole and phony is awesome.

Just got my spotify year in review - tracking what I listened to during the year.

Top 5 artists:

The Fall
Talking Heads
Liquid Mind
Fela Kuti
Dennis Brown

# 3 is ambient meditation music (which sometimes plays while I sleep).

I could probably use some new bands...

They emailed it to me (signed up for Spotify with just an email address well before I had a FB account).

Try going to Made For You under Your Library in the app (it's there in the desktop version, at least).

Compiling my top 10 list of albums for the year and was kinda surprised where I ended up with #1, but I feel even more strongly about it today after sleeping on it for a couple of days. This artist has shown incredible promise with their past two albums, but this one really delivers on all that promise.

The pinnacle is a 12-minute black metal/post-rock masterpiece, which defies explanation, logic or labels. It spins gloriously from punk, rockabilly, metal, alt-whatever and back around again. And the video is pretty fucking awesome too. (The whole album is outstanding, but "Honeycomb" is absolutely incredible.)

New obsession that you music hipsters probably already know about (especially since half the stuff on YT is from KEXP), but Lake Street Dive is fucking great.

That was the Third Man Records twitter account. Someone must've gotten a wrist-slapping.
I went and fired up Dopesmoker because of this news (420!) to see what it's about. I'm seven minutes in, there have been no words, and it's almost like it's a soundtack for an alien movie but yet I am still compelled to keep listening.

Comment on the youtube page:

"This is my ringtone. The whole thing."

Just got control of the aux on vacation. Every one gets a song before passing it on. Dopesmoker it is.
Saw them in Denver last week. They ripped through most of the new album, with the encore being "Dragonaut" (off Holy Mountain) and like a 10 minute excerpt of Dopesmoker. Very satisfying.
Seems like a dopesmoker kind of afternoon.
Went to a different floor to speak to someone, and saw a coworker with a Sleep t-shirt on. We talked about Sleep for a few minutes. She saw them in concert Monday night. I told her Rolling Stone just named their latest album metal album of the year.

How is Def Leppard 1st ballot while Radiohead is 2nd ballot, both logistically and aesthetically?

Wait... Roxy Music wasn't in already and Cheap Trick is?

That'd be like electing Harold Baines before Barry Bonds.

I'm calling bullshit on that analogy. I've never heard of Roxy Music in my life, so they can't possibly be Barry Fricking Bonds.
