1986. 3 of the 18 starters (Gwynn, Puckett, Carter) are dead.

3 of the Hall of Famers of that era too. Since there won't be any more Hall of Famers once the pitchers and Biggio get in, place is going to get pretty lonely soon.

Did he make it through the whole season coaching at SDSU? Also looks like this goes to dipping.

All I can think about is the way Rickey Henderson would pronounce his name, a high-pitched squeel: GWYEEEEEEEEEEEENNNNNEEEE!

I don't have enough info to judge, but maybe not. Parotid gland tumors are (probably) not related to tobacco. The parotid glands are the big salivary glands in your cheek that swell up when you have mumps. Gwynn had surgery to remove his parotid gland; however it could've been a cancer arising from parotid tissue (probably not tobacco related) or a cancer of other tissue that spread into the parotid gland (tobacco related).

Not that it matters. But in times of sadness, I retreat into my worse pendant habits, to evoke a false feeling of control. Sorry. Kids, don't fucking dip!

Seems like I remember him attributing the cancer to dipping when he was first diagnosed. I could be wrong. Either way, sad to see him go so soon.

Can easily close my eyes, it's 1984 and I am arguing over the future rookie card value of Gwynn and Sandberg at the little league field.

This sucks.

sucks..

I know some romanticize about a player playing for one team but in this case I think he was wasted in San Diego.
In today's world of money and free agency, he would have been traded to a big market. Imagine him at Fenway pinging balls off the monster.

In 323 at-bats against Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Pedro Martinez and Greg Maddux, Tony Gwynn struck out a total of 3 times.

Gwynn used to have 5.5 written on his spikes to remind him of the 3B - SS hole. That's awesome.

"Slight timing hitch that causes him to inside/out a lot of pitches…"

Hilarious. One man's timing hitch is another man's genius. But the scout got some of it right. Predictions are hard.

His death is a nice reminder about how much the 94 strike sucked. Gwynn legitimately going after .400, Matt Williams chasing Maris, the Expos...

You left out the last part: "Could be a good hitter some day." He would have only had to get a lot worse.

@boxcar_fritz I never met Gwynn. I did meet Benito, a few times. I want a friggin' do-over.
