I pretty much only buy games with robust single player modes.

This. I had the opportunity to play Call of Duty: WW II two weekends ago, and it's an incredible game with great graphics and intense gameplay. But I'm not going to shell out money to play it online, so I have no plans to buy it. I might rent it for a week and do the single-player campaign, but that's all the time I need to finish the single player component.

My next game likely will be Gran Turismo Sport, because I've been a fan of that franchise going back to the PS2 days.

ETA: FIFA 18 is a terrific game too, although I wish I could change teams a little easier. (AB's already heard me rant about this.)

Are you playing as a manager or the my player career in FIFA?

Player career. Created a central midfielder for Borussia Dortmund and have done well there, now want to go to the EPL and wreck shop there.

I haven't tried the manager mode in FIFA 18, but that feature in earlier versions of FIFA was lackluster in my experience.

Nice. I'm a striker for Sunderland, we're just getting back from a few friendlies in the US (it's down a bit on my gaming queue.)

Agreed on single player components, if only for the simple reason that I do not want to wear a headset to talk to people that are not in my physical presence (I have no interest in virtual reality gaming).

CoD WW2 looks promising, but I groan whenever I'm unfortunate enough to re-learn what I managed to previously un-learn about the Call of Duty franchise:

they introduced zombies into it. So really what it boils down to...Is the single player campaign large enough to justify a purchase, without exploring the zombie portion of the game?

I have a friend who bought it who was not impressed with the campaign mode.

That's why I want to rent it instead of buy it. I could care less about anything zombie related, so I only want to play the campaign. And I can't justify spending $60 just for that.

How does one rent games in 2017? I used to rent them at Blockbuster like 75 years ago.

There's a local video store chain in Cleveland called Family Video that's still in business and rents games. I go there from time-to-time just to see what they have.

Not to my knowledge. There's still some Family Video locations around here. Surely if you look for things you might find em. Other than that, I'd assume Netflix of vidyas is the only way to go now.

They do.

And BSF21, I had no idea Family Video was outside of the Cleveland area. Never seen them around anywhere else.

Quick Google shows me 11 in the greater Indianapolis Area. I would have guessed maybe 3?

I expressly buy games in spite of single player campaigns, Mario Odyssey and Zelda Breath of the Wild being 2 of the only recent exceptions. I only want to play with other people at this point in my life. I have played basically every major single player game over the last 20 years and the mechanics are all basically the same. I have never played a Call of Duty single player campaign for more than 15 minutes. I'll play coop storyline games, but by myself? no thanks.

*Dark Souls is so good it is one of my favorite games of all time, basically everything else pales in comparison.

I did see the comments on reddit. Dice sucks. I have a weakness for anything Star Wars. So I expect I'll buy it and then get crushed online. I play it with my oldest and we hand-off the controller after every death. We probably won't play enough to do all the fancy unlocks anyway.

If anyone gets it and plays on PS4 send me a DM if you are interested in finishing last as a team.

My son and I preordered for the PC. We have been playing since Tuesday. He completed the single player campaign very quickly. I die a lot. My son knows that he spends real money he will sleep on the lawn for a very long time.

My game of choice right now is Player Unknown Battleground. Just fun. Duo and Squad can be annoying if you get stuck with someone who does not speak English (on the North America Server) or try to kill you because...who knows why.

DM if you want to connect on either of those games.

Didn't expect to run into anyone else here who was familiar with it, but: Fuck yes. I've only made it about halfway through the first one, though.

I typically play the single player campaigns only, but do play a couple of games online. That said the online sessions are with my best buddy and/or my brother and we get on hangouts. Then it's basically a night at the bar except we're complaining about cheating fuckers.

There are online leagues of Madden 2007 (I think, the last one for PC) and NHL 95 that have been going on forever. There is a really strong community for 2007 MVP baseball as well.

Ditto BSF, I enjoy the Switch as well. Was pleased to see they added Lumines recently. Loved that game on PSP.

We have two and neither were an issue and I’ve not heard of any problems. Hopefully it was just a bad unit and the new one works fine for you.

Probably going to get my son a Nintendo Switch for his birthday. What else do I need to get with it? Does it come with a game? All the cables you might need?

I'd like to get him at least one game that allows up to 4 players. What other controllers do I need to buy to support that? Just one more controller because it splits in two? Or do games require both of those little controllers?

My oldest has a switch. I think he has an extra set of joy cons (skinny controllers that slide off and on). He loves the Zelda game and Mario Kart.

So I got Madden this year for the first time in ages. It’s god awful. The game mechanics are so bad it’s not enjoyable.

There are some bundles out there that come with games - not sure if they're all available right now but there's Mario Odyssey (which is basically a 1-player game but it's soooo good), Splatoon 2 (which is online-play intensive although there's a decent single-player mode), and Mario Kart (which rules and is a definite must for local multi-player). Super Smash Bros (coming soon) and Zelda are the other biggies.

The right controllers are going to vary by game, and by who's playing. If it's just one person, you either play it handheld with the joycons attached or dock it to the TV and play with the joycons freely. Most games are playable with just one of the joycons turned sideways like a little NES controller, so 2 people can play right out of the box but there are definitely some that require you to hold both for motion control stuff. You can buy another set of joycons for like $60-$70. Caution - I've had 2 fail on me already.

I also picked up a wireless pro controller (good for adults who are used to bigger controllers) and a little controller dock that you can slide the joycons onto, which serves a similar purpose. Any combination of all those will be plenty for friends, especially if some of them have their own already. We charge ours by docking them on the Switch but you can also get a separate charger if you have a lot of users wanting to play constantly.

Oh, and starting soon you have to pay for online access. I think it's only like $20 a year for one account. They're putting some old NES games on there so that's worth the price alone if you're a fan. Cloud saves too.

I use the Switch a lot! Steal it when possible.

Thanks, Turd. I was thinking that Mario Odyssey would be a good first game. And it looks like it works well with 2 players, right?

The second player controls Mario's hat and can fly around somewhat independently to grab certain coins that are hard to get on your own. With the right person it's kind of fun but we rarely used it.

I bought Madden a couple of years ago and it was terrible. the gameplay itself wasn't the worst, but I just wanted to play a damn football game. I don't need the theatrics or animations. gimme a 7-minute quarter game in ~30 minutes please
