That was certainly an ACA irony. Companies were/are penalized for making sure their employees have excellent health insurance.

I'm not one of the wingnuts railing against Obamacare. Obviously it provides great social benefit. But, as Brian noted, there are unintended consequences. One being that companies are likely to eliminate their most generous ("Cadillac") plan options for their employees, so they don't have company insurance plans that will be subject to the excise tax. Effectively shifting expense from the company to the employees while still insuring them. My company already did it this year with the plan that cost them the most money. I was on that plan last year, and in open enrollment, I had to choose a different plan for this year.

It's pretty crazy how that actually shakes out. Weren't we inundated with "if you're happy with your healthcare plan, you can keep it" during the passage of it? Anything the government does is going to fuck over the consumer.

I don't know that there was much outcry about that particular provision to be honest. I'm not even really complaining about it as much as I am noting the irony of funding a law to help provide health insurance to the uninsured by taxing health insurance plans. Even if my employer didn't help pay for the deductible of our new plan between my health FSA and being able to deduct medical expenses on my taxes, I'd end up about where I was anyway.

It's not pretty. Before they even have taken saw one to my skull, it would be roughly the cost of a high-end European luxury car. Thinking when this year is said and done it should be well into six figures.

ETA: Fortunately we have really good insurance at work. Only a $1,000 deductible and the company refunds that anyway (we used to have what was considered a "Cadillac" healthcare plan, but had to get rid of it thanks to Obamacare.)
Yeah, neurovascular imaging studies ain't cheap. Neuroradiologist is a well-paying gig (if you like spending your life staring at computer-generated shadows of reality.) They do get to drive high-end Euro luxury cars (hey, mine is 15years old, and I bought it used for $14K.)

(FYI, the tax on Cadillac health plans doesn't kick in until 2018.)

Going to the Monday night football season opener on Sept 8 if you're going.
Not sure yet if I will be able to get the time off to attend that game, but I will certainly keep you posted!
If you do go, get downtown EARLY. There's a Tigers game at the exact same time. It's going to be apeshit. (I'm kinda personally pissed that I'm missing a Lucero concert, also in downtown Detroit that night, though that's not going to have any impact on traffic obvs.)

Ironically (or not), it turns out that I am going to be in Vegas that day. You and me Brian, we're like two ships passing in the night.

So after getting kind of jerked around by the insurance company and neurosurgeon and whatnot, somewhat suddenly my surgery is a go for Wednesday. So this is probably my last post for awhile. Catch you all on the flip side.

Thanks guys (inc MrD). I'm going to see if they can zap the part of the brain that controls pro football memories while they're at it. My neuro's from Michigan so I'm sure he'll understand.

Tell him to be careful not to zap those pleasant Chips memories.

I'm sure you will be wide awake and good to go by Wednesday mid afternoon. Best wishes.

I'm hoping for some kind of Flowers for Algernon situation. But instead of becoming a genius, Brian becomes incredibly pollyanna'ish about the Lions... But eventually reverts back to normal.
