That OU logo isn't one they used in the past. There's an older logo that looks like it, but it isn't the same.

Not that it isn't on brand, but clicking through to that main page there are at least 7 different logos depicting Native Americans in various degrees of caricature plus multiple instances of the old "Southern gentleman" Ole Miss Rebels logo.

It's gorgeous

I've got 5 different Banner Society ones (Banner, PAPN, University of Nightham, Steven Godfrey Hates My Team, and Internet's Only College Football Podcast) as well as an Iowa Hawkeyes hoodie. Bought my parents Bucknell (dad's alma mater) and Dayton (mom's hometown) gear for XMAS last year.

Belated thank. I’m pretty sure I bought the kindle edition that day (a little less than 2 years ago) and finally just read it this month. What a great read, on a subject that I don’t think I’ve spent time on since HS and even the “highlights” were hazy.

The disregard for the value of human life was just staggering.

Going to try another WWI book, The First World War: A Complete History by Martin Gilbert. Meyer referenced in his notes, and Amazon has it available for free via prime.

I've had one of these for about 7-8 years, and it's worked very well. I don't think it's wise to put a portable fire pit on a deck, though.

Bought my folks a restaurant propane heater type thing for their deck in Pittsburgh. Worked great. Bought it from walmart.

Is that because of the heat or possible embers? Related ... does this go for charcoal grills as well or not because its self-contained?

Both?

I've had more than a few embers fall out of the fire pit and onto the ground. If you put some sand in the bottom of the fire pit, that will serve as a heat shield and keep the heat away from the deck.

Yes please be careful on wooden decks. Lots of house fires start this way. I haven’t heard about the sand thing but at the very least you’ll need something fireproof under it if it’s open flame.

Hmmm ... it explicitly calls itself deck-safe with the stand and I've always assumed companies go the opposite way to ensure no liability even when only human error could make it unsafe.

I can't speak for Landmann, but my experience with my fire pit is embers will fall out multiple times while in use.

That looks fine to me.

It seems to me that heat would be a bigger potential problem than embers. It takes a lot for embers to set something solid on fire, and presumably you'd notice if it were happening.

We used a regular saucer-shaped fire pit on our front deck before ... then realized the heat had blackened the deck. Now we keep a couple of bricks from an old wood stove underneath it, and it's fine.

For me a bigger fear is embers blowing out from the deck into the woods. So we don't use it when it's windy (and now open fires are banned around here anyway.) But I doubt that'd be a big concern in the suburbs.

Everyone should buy this right now. That’s a great deal and one of my top 5 items in the kitchen. And it didn’t even need to be heavily vetted for that pick. I’ve had a great interest in thermodynamics since childhood.

That's fucked up. I started to write more, specifically about it being a top 5 non-necessity, but then I felt I'd have to caveat away what counts as necessities and it became too much so I didn't. I ordered the infrared one when that was $25 less on sale two weeks ago for the kids to give me for Christmas.

But now that we're already doing this, I guess if you get a fully functional base level kitchen but then can upgrade five things, the thermapen would totally be one. That, chef's knife, baking steel, coffee grinder and dutch oven, off the top of my head.

Ha! If it came with a clip, I'd buy it right now. I need a better meat thermometer (readings all over the map on Thanksgiving), and a better thermometer for brewing. I like a clip so I don't have to hold it while trying to rapidly bring the temp down when I finish brewing. Gotta get that rapid cold crash, y'all!
