Wikipedia's front page today featured a Blackfoot Indian chief named Buffalo Bull's Back Fat, which I had to look up to make sure it wasn't a joke (it isn't, as far as I can tell).

His name in his native language was Stu-mick-o-súcks. Both of those are future Swamp aliases just begging to be claimed.

He used to(?, not on the listing you posted) own a course right up the highway from my parents.

My dad hated him because he pulled all sorts of local shenanigans to benefit the place (or himself and his fellow investors). I think I swam at the pool there once in elementary school, probably before Jaws owned the place.

Thought this was an interesting article about how German-Americans used to be the country's most visible ethnic group, retaining their language and culture and forming important voting blocks, until public attitudes during the World Wars caused them to fade into the mainstream.

Note: I actually saw this yesterday, but figured it wasn't the best day to ruminate on German culture.

If your office phone system requires you to dial 9 for an outside line, the cops are showing up at least once a week.

Given how prolific passing offenses are today, and how much the rules have shifted to favor offenses, the statistics of most Hall of Fame quarterbacks look mediocre to bad by today's standards. For example, Bradshaw, Namath and Layne have lower career QB Ratings than any active quarterback with 1500+ career pass attempts.

Joe Namath only threw more TDs than Ints twice in his career - his rookie season (18/15) and the year after the Super Bowl win (19/17).

For his career - (50.1% CP and 173/220 TD/INT).

Different era... my father still ranks him as one of the top 5 he ever saw.

Funny. My father says he believes Namath is the most overrated NFL player, ever. The Jets were actually a running team, and Joe got tons of publicity from being the big, fun-loving NYC celebrity. Lived off of winning the Seper Bowl the rest of his career, as he and the Jets were generally mediocre after that

I recently learned that a tchotchke is an actual term for a small item of minimal worth. I had just assumed it was a name invented in Office Space for its similarity to those of chain restaurants.

Yiddish has even more words for useless things than it does for penises.

Remember, if the tchotchke is made by a shmendrik, it's probably a piece of dreck.

I grew up with an older generation that sounded like they were hoarking up phlegm when they spoke to each other.

I was figuring the beavis and butthead brothers from first season of The Leftovers.

I also learned Tommie Heinsohn is still doing Celtics TV, at age 81. He did national TV in the 80s (and sucked then, especially when the Lakers/Celts were in the finals).

Bowlers Journal International is the longest-running sports monthly in the United States. It is thriving in print—advertising is up! The magazine, founded in 1913 by a Chicago shoe salesman, has a remarkably loyal base of subscribers and advertisers.
