So I was at my kids' high school for a science fair a few Saturdays ago. In one of the rooms, a chemistry room, they had signs regarding the mole, which is as some of you might remember from high school chem, is 6.02 x 10 to the 23rd. It's basically the number of atoms of a pure substance (after checking) equal to the number of carbon atoms in 12 grams of C-12. Or in another way, it's how many atoms it would take to equal in grams the nuclear weight of a given element. So for Uranium-238 (that's the one they use for reactors), 238 grams of it (say about a half a pound) would have a mole's worth of Uranium atoms.

So yeah. It's a really big number. It's 620 billion trillions. And to give an idea of how large, there were signs indicating how many of certain things that would be. Like that many pennies in stacks would reach the moon 7 times.

One that stuck in my head is that it's a larger number than the number of grains of sand in Miami Beach. Which would surprise me. Because I would think that a mole number would be WAAAAAYYY larger than the number of grains of sand on the beach in Miami. Maybe it's just me, but if someone told me there was 620 billion trillion grains of sand on Miami Beach, I would think that number would be too large by a factor of at least 9 zeroes. Like 620 trillion would make sense to me on that calcuation.

Speaking of that sort of perspective exercise, I wish someone would take the millionaire vs billionaire equation and clean it up and somehow really drive it into the consciousness of the masses. The basics being that for someone who has $100K in assets*, you'd have to combine with 9 other people of the same means to equal one millionaire. If every person in the entire state of Vermont was worth $100K each, they'd still fall short of Zuckerberg. I'm sure there are better ways to illustrate, but when it comes to taxing wealth over $10MM or more, the idea that it "hurts" anyone, anywhere, at all, is incredibly misleading.


* Obviously not an immaterial number at all, but too low and people start exempting themselves from the equation since its just comparing "the poor".
