2014-2015 Champions League Thread

Post by degenerasian »

Let's start with how to get into the Champions League!

Ludogorets is a Bulgarian team, lost the first leg 1-0 in Romania to Steaua Bucuresti

Ludogorets win in penalties as their stand in goalkeeper makes 2 saves (after scoring his own spot kick while wearing the backup goalkeeper's shirt)!

Must be hard to be a Man U fan.

I say that with the maximum amount of sarcasm.

Also, wonder what Roma or CSKA would pay to be in Group H.

so with the keeper that was sent off suspended and the backup keeper injured. They signed Canadian keeper Milan Borjan on Sunday. First game? At Anfield! Good luck kid!

Holy crap did Arsenal ever look like shit today.

The score could have been 5-0 and it would have flattered them.

On the other hand, this Dortmund team takes the art of diving to a whole new level.

Liverpool didn't impress either. I had money on a Liverpool win, and was pretty certain I'd pissed it down the drain until the Canadian fouled the Liverpudlian in the box. From there, I just knew Gerrard would convert. Either way, I'm shocked that Liverpool didn't do more to put the game way out of hand before that point.

Diving had nothing to do with it. Just shockingly poor passes in the middle of the field stopping buildup play and leading to dangerous counter attacks. Then there were the numerous blunders, like Arteta dummying a ball to an onrushing Dortmunder, several shambolic intercepted back passes, Szczesny slipping coming out on the second goal, Szczesny lazily playing the ball and having it stolen off his foot... So many shocking mistakes. As good as Alexis was on Saturday, he was horrendous yesterday. I'd like to see how many unforced passing errors he made. Just flat out passing to the wrong team with little or no pressure on him. Ozil was useless, yet again. Welbeck should have done better on a couple of chances, but otherwise played well. someone lit a fire under Wilshire. He was a beast tearing forward to and break up passes and counter quickly. He has been fantastic the past 2 games. And Ox needs to get far more minutes. He came in and took the game on. He does this just about every game, and he only gets on late, if at all. He is the only Arsenal player who attacks with abandon and blows past defenders.

Klopp is the greatest coach in sports. He looks like a 1980s serial killer, homeless, or a serial killing homeless man. His hoodie was sweet, too. I love his enthusiasm in celebrating goals, hugging players coming on and off the field, his heavy metal intros and his interviews. He is pretty much the opposite of Wenger (who I also love).

Lodogorets gave Liverpool fits in match day 1. The Reds were about to be lucky to escape with a point, then they stole all three at the death.

Donetsk is the center of the rebellion state of Novorossia in Eastern Ukraine. They had a beautiful stadium, but the Kiev government forces bombed the shit out of it. Despite the nominal ceasefire, shelling of the city continues, and they had to move the match to Lviv, in the west, a very nationalistic (nazi) region. No home field advantage for Shakhtar.

Oh, I'm not casually tossing the 'N' word. Supporters of FC Karpaty Lviv, whose stadium Shakhtar will be borrowing, in the grandstand:

Juventus lived down to all the stereotypes about Italian soccer.

Every foul was met with whines, every bump ended up in huge tumbles and rolls. Completely unappealing side today.

Watched first half of Man City/CKSA at lunch yesterday, and City was totally dominant. Like U16 against U12 dominant. I am amazed to realize that CKSA ended up tying that game. I have no idea how that could have happened.

True. I was in a funk of doom and despair dwelling on how the season is in shambles. I usually expect the better side to net late goals to get a result, amazing how often it happens, yet I was convinced Arsenal wouldn't even get the draw. Unreal. Arsenal can be incredible when they turn it on at the end of a game, they just need to work on the first 85 minutes. I think a lot of it comes from the Ox coming on late. Podalski has to have one of the best shot to goal ratios. He is an assassin in or near the box, but pretty useless otherwise.

Better yet, third in the table and not looking like shite 75% of the time. Still not where they need to be, but the injuries have been harsh. I think there's a second half push waiting without all that midweek crap!

Yep. The fact that the Red Devils were mostly outplayed by Arsenal, Stoke and Southampton means nothing to me. They got the 9 points. I'm a little wary of going to Villa this weekend, but they really have been shit so far this year.

If you look at the schedule, there's no game that they won't be favored in until April vs. City.

Chelsea are insane. Earlier, Ivanovic was basically playing in a near offside position on the right touch line. Then, their goal was a cross from Terry, backheel flick by Cahill, and header into the net from Ivanovic. They play like they've got the field map backwards.
