The HEX! and other World Cup Qualifiers

US announces roster for the next two qualifiers at home against Costa Rica and in the Azteca against Mexico. Injuries have ravaged the back four, and I've never even heard of a single option at outside fullback. Maybe one of the MLS followers can ease my fear.

Roster:

U.S. ROSTER BY POSITION (World Cup qualifying Caps/Goals)

GOALKEEPERS (3): Brad Guzan (Aston Villa - 5/3 SO), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire – 0/0), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake – 0/0)
DEFENDERS (6): Tony Beltran (Real Salt Lake – 0/0), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City – 0/0), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City – 6/0), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy – 1/0), Clarence Goodson (Brondby – 5/0), Justin Morrow (San Jose Earthquakes – 0/0)
MIDFIELDERS (9): DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla – 26/6), Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake – 2/0), Michael Bradley (Roma – 20/5), Joe Corona (Club Tijuana – 1/0), Maurice Edu (Bursaspor – 10/0), Jermaine Jones (Schalke 04 – 6/0), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht – 13/0), Brek Shea (Stoke City – 2/0), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City – 4/0)
FORWARDS (5): Jozy Altidore (AZ Alkmaar – 18/6), Terrence Boyd (Rapid Vienna – 2/0), Clint Dempsey (Tottenham Hotspur – 27/11), Herculez Gomez (Santos – 6/2), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders FC – 12/10)

The entire 23-man roster combined has as many caps as Landon Donovan. Time to start drinking heavily.

We're basically fucked if the USMNT get one point or less out of these two games, right?

At this point, I'd probably take a draw at home and loss at Azteca. Considering the US has lost 1 home qualifier in the last 32 years (even with some pretty dreadful teams back in the 80s/90s, a loss would be devastating.

I agree. Zero would really suck (because it would also be 3 points for CR). One at least keeps CR at bay, and we just have to hope to be healthier and better in the summer.

If you haven't read this article about the USMNT and Klinsmann, you should do it right now.

I am now officially scared we won't qualify for Brazil.

US Soccer announced the date and location of the rest of the home World Cup qualifying matches last night. They are:

June 11: vs. Panama in Seattle

June 18: vs. Honduras in Salt Lake City

Sept. 10: vs. Mexico in Columbus

Oct. 11: vs. Jamaica in Kansas City

Also, in addition to the friendly vs. Belgium in Cleveland, they're playing a friendly vs. Germany on June 2 at RFK Stadium.

Anyone interested in going to the Mexico match? Unfortunately it's a mid-week game, but I'm going to do my best to attend.

Read the article couple days ago and thought it was ok for Klinsmann. Even if hes a bad tactician hes at least forward looking. Point is to play well in 2014, right. Cant be scared not to qualify.

In some good news for SlimChristian, right now Israel leads Portugal 3-2 in the 85th minute of their World Cup qualifier.

Goal Portugal! In extra time, a Portugal cross was headed off the crossbar, and the ball dropped to a defender's feet. He kicked it to clear, but the ball went off Coentrao's leg and into the net.

Harsh.

ETA: Game over. 3-3 draw.

I have a three-week trial scheduled to run until June 21, dammit. Will probably try to get tickets and then unload them if I can't make it.

The USMNT is also playing a Gold Cup game against Cuba here in July, if anyone wants to see some soccer and mountains at the same time.

And we've got the Gold Cup match against Belize here July 9th if anyone wants to see some soccer and hipsters.

I'm watching the US from the start for the first time in the HEX.

If they win I'll take the credit, if they lose I wasn't here.

Thanks.

I heard Sabo was hurt, but selfishly I'm glad he's not.

The RSL players should be in. They know how to win in Colorado

Edit: The other Sabo.

They need to see the halfway line. If you're in your own zone, you cannot be offside.

If that stoppage went the way the announcers guessed it did (the players telling the red thy wanted to play on), then that was pretty sporting of CR.
