You guys don't even know the half of it. This is a woman who used to be married to one of my best friends in Las Vegas and he's actually supportive of the relationship because her second husband is a real tool and it's affecting their kids.

Normally I'd run for the hills with that much drama, but she's insanely hot and has had a crush on me since she was 23 and married to my friend (she's 36 now). We met because I used to run the CMU alumni chapter in Las Vegas and they were regulars for football Saturdays before the kids were born.

We started dating when we were 19. I have almost literally NEVER been out on the dating scene. Sometime in 2023 that should change I guess. Train fucking wreck coming.

To type more on this - and because it helps - it is clear that she yearns for something more and something she's never had - space to really explore doing her own thing. She, like me, has been marriage and family focused for a long time. We had B when we were 25 and Q when we were 31 on top of being married at 21.

She talks of Europe, or California. Stuff I cannot do because of job and bills and the like. Stuff that maybe would be possible for her if she were on her own. I want her to be happy. I do not in any event want to stand in her way or have her stay and drift into true unhappiness in her 50s because of history. It is the last thing I want to see (or feel responsible for). It's a matter of me accepting it and making space for her to explore and that is something I can do. I owe her that and there is room in my love for her for that. We can let this unfold between now and June as she finishes up another year at her current school and we sort out how to handle finances etc. Figure out if I can stay here at the house (I think I can and she wants that). We can do this and remain fast friends. I can look at it as a chance to be better too. Laziness does set in and what not. There are no villains here. There is simply a need to do what's best for our love for each other and for ourselves.

Dumb question. Could you not do this without officially getting divorced? It sounds like the definition of an open relationship.
I have an aunt and uncle who are kind of like this. The uncle goes back to Vietnam 6 months a year, has a mistress like 30 years younger and has fathered more children. The aunt goes on tours and cruises with a group of single ladies and kind of stabilizes things when at home. She may meet a man from time to time on trips. And in the summer they're back in Calgary doing stuff together.

In your case, she would go do her own thing since she craves it and you'd be working and holding the fort down. Maybe she goes off on this adventure thinking she's been missing this in her life, hates it, and realizes the current arrangement is better.

Your sentiments here are very admirable. But it almost sounds like you’re getting guilted into working to pay bills while she lives a life of freedom. If you’re completely okay with that, that’s good. But don’t forget that you have as much of a right to that kind of freedom as she does.
