Sorry you've been deployed to a country that puts your life at such unnecessary risk.

Re: Hey Johnnie
Got news today that I received non-volunteer orders to Kunsan AB, Korea. Report date in November. It's a 1 year assignment.
The Air Force wouldn't let be choose my next assignment nor did they see fit to promote me to the next rank because I'm judged exclusively on my performance reports and my really bad performance report is still part of "the board."
But since I've been at Kirtland for so long and my last short tour was 2013, I was the most eligible to put in Korea. I'm sick of this shit.
Tomorrow I'll go in to talk about my options. Hopefully I can decline it because I'm so close to retirement, but we'll see. COVID/my extended deployment already forced the delay of my wedding from September to April and now here we go possibly delaying it again until the beginning of 2022.
Gone for 7 months on a week and a half notice and I can't even enjoy a 6 month reprieve from overseas bullshit. I'm over this, man. I'm really over this.

Re: Hey Johnnie
Yup. It's a done deal. I have to go. If I turn down getting retainability I would literally be getting forced separated before 20 years. It's like the Air Force knew I had plans. If this were 6 weeks from now, I'd be able to opt out and retire in due time.
But nope. I'll do all of the necessary extension stuff this week and apply for Base of Preference (it's a perk with a 1 year assignment), but we'll see if I get my chosen follow on. I'll be putting Davis Monthan, Luke, and Nellis. The way I figure it, if I get one of those places I'll "drop paperwork" as soon as I show up and retire eventually from there. If I don't get one of those places, I'll try to retire straight from Korea. We'll see.
At the very least, there's no more curfew. So I don't have to rush on base around 1 am in fear of my career going down the shitter. And I am really excited to eat real Korean food again and buy inexpensive, high quality suits. Maybe even hit up southeast Asia in mid tour if COVID eases up.
I just need to remain positive. It isn't the worst thing to happen to me, but it was certainly unexpected.

Re: Hey Johnnie
Well, some good news this morning.
I got Davis Monthan in Tucson, AZ (Where I was before) for my base after Korea. This is the best possible scenario from this mess. My future wife is already living there and working at Raytheon. Sooooo, whew. It alleviates me from going to some other shitty base, being there for several months, and then bring able to retire.
I have a light at the end of this tunnel.

Re: Hey Johnnie
I know you told us this already somewhere up thread, but... How long are you scheduled to be in Korea this time?
"What a bunch of pedantic pricks." - sybian
Re: Hey Johnnie
A year. There are several "short tour" locations overseas (Korea, Turkey, Spain, Greenland,..etc). The unaccompanied minimum length is 12 months. These are considered "hardship duty locations" and are the most important to have 100% of positions across the base filled at all times. And it's why I got to select a follow on assignment as well. It's a perk.
Now, there are ways to go "accompanied" (meaning: bring families), but that turns a 12 month assignment into a 24 month assignment. And there's no way I'm doing that.

Re: Hey Johnnie
In order to be fully eligible to retire the big thing is having 20 years of active miliary service. (Note: Guard and Reserve have a completely different set of retirement criteria. I've never looked into it, but the big thing is they don't "retire" until actual retirement age. And then there's the wrinkle of "active guard" and "active reserve" positions that can actually let you have 2 separate retirement checks. Those positions are few and far between, but highly sought-after.)
Then there's also making sure you're medically cleared, there are no service commitments (like transferring GI Bill benefits to a dependent, for example...that incurs a 4 year service commitment), etc. Retirement is also not automatic. You have to apply. You can actually, technically, separate after 20 years but my God you better have hit the Powerball or something. And even then, why would you do that? Make the government pay you until you die.
This is why this assignment at this time was such a kick in the dick. If I had been at or past 19 years I could "7 day opt" and retire. It's a program put in place to give you a free and clear avenue to retire up to one year from eligibility. It has stipulations like not being able to take certain positions it being promotable, but it's something.
They hit me 6 weeks before that magical date. I got got as it were. And coming off a 7 month deployment where I had a week and a half notice? Double oof.
The plan now? Get a master's degree that costs the same as a bachelor's ($250 a credit hour... Western Kentucky, here I come? and then I'll tap into the GI Bill after I'm done.) and when I get to Arizona, chill out, and maybe stay until 21 years. There's no rush to retire once Korea is over. It'll be my last huge hurdle.

Considering he's doing it because they had a poll of service members that narrowly favored Biden over him, yes.
(But even despite that, yes. Stars & Stripes is more or less if not universally liked by the armed forces, it's universally appreciated for what it is. Or that's my understanding at least.)

It's the literal only newspaper you'll get in any theater all over the world. And it's actually a remarkable print because it's topical. It's an aggregator type of paper because it pulls articles from everywhere. I liked it for the funnies and cryptoquip.
I think on a small level it's not necessarily a big deal because we all have cell phones and can read all media worldwide, so you could look at it as "newspapers are dying and here's another reason."
BUT
In light of recent events, it's clearly the Fat Orange Man doing what he can to further detract from his falling numbers within the military because he's a petty little fuckstain.
In other words, Streisand Effect.

In Trump's defense, the paper did say not nice things about him, so it deserved to be shut down. Alternatively, the paper doesn't make a profit, so it clearly has no value.Johnnie wrote: ↑Fri Sep 04, 2020 11:57 am It's the literal only newspaper you'll get in any theater all over the world. Looking like while I'm in Korea I'll be going back to school and getting my masters.
Western Kentucky University, baby! It's $250 per credit hour for active military (just like most undergrads) which is completely covered by my tuition assistance and their MBA has a concentration in Supply Chain Management. Plus, it's 10 classes too.

That’s pretty dope.
Now here is where I play devils advocate: if you already know that supply chain shizz why don’t you get the mba in another concentration?

My undergrad is Transportation and Logistics Management, so Supply Chain Management does broaden things slightly.

Re: Hey Johnnie
So i see the core currciulum is seven courses and then three for concentration. So you'll get a well-rounded anyway. Personally I'd go with Data Analytics, but I think you'd be fine now that I see that you get the general MBA stuff no matter what.

Great timing. The Air Force must know I'm going back to school.
The Air Force is dropping Tuition Assistance to $3,750 from $4,500 starting in a couple days.
This means I'll be doing 1 less class per fiscal year. Extremely bad business to do this with less than 2 days notice.
