THE 2014-2015 NHL Regular Season Thread

Post by degenerasian »

It all starts tonight.

Tragically Hip performing at Maple Leafs Square at 6:00pm

Canadiens at Maple Leafs 7:00pm
Bruins at Flyers 7:30pm
Canucks at Flames 10:00pm
Sharks at Kings 10:30pm

Here are the hockey terms you need to know

And the new Sportsnet studio isn't too shabby.

All hockey all the time in Canada. The team that the network has put together looks amazing. An Olympic style tv budget to broadcast a hockey season.

Very excited for this season of rooting for the Ranger-Rangers but not the Lightning-Rangers or Blue Jacket-Rangers.

At least you get to be Blue Jacket-Rangers upset by the Dubinsky injury!

I have no idea what is going to happen with the Pens this season.

I'm concerned about the Sharks this season. Lost Dan Boyle and Martin Havlat as UFAs, Raffi Torres, James Sheppard and Tyler Kennedy to injury, and other than young kids (three rookies made the opening day team), the only newcomer is knuckle-dragging goon John Scott. Goalie competition continues. More distressingly, GM Doug Wilson (whom I've always supported previously) seemingly lost his mind (see above) and also supposedly tried to trade Joe Thornton and Patty Marleau. When they refused to waive their no-trade agreements he settled for stripping them of their letters, which doesn't seem to have helped team morale. A bunch of pissed off guys, as far as I can tell.

And to top it off, fucking Bettman schedules them for opening night in Los Angeles, pouring salt in the wound of blowing the 3-0 series lead by forcing them to watch the Kings receive their rings tonight. (And Bettman gleefully said he told the schedulemakers to do this.)

So, no I'm not as optimistic as I was in years past.

Hey, don't forget that the Center Ice trial is free for a little while! I've got the Montreal/Toronto game on right now (channel 769 on DirecTV).

Its hard to take talk of the Flyers turning into a serious analytical front office when Rinaldo is still one of their 18.

Oilers fans have a new tradition of showing their disgust with the team by throwing their Oilers shirts onto the ice.

Glad I have Scrivens! Goals against average of 5.08!

Anyway Habs are looking good, two close games but they came out on top of both. Only 2-0 team in the league right now! nice seeing them on top.

That's sort of silly to say, for this weekend at least. There must be a fair number of teams having home openers tonight, and they probably prefer a night game.

And just to make myself feel better about that response, I checked and the first afternoon game is in two weeks, in SJ, and it isn't on NBC.

San Jose looks amazing again.

The annual 82-game dress rehearsal for the playoffs.

Meanwhile Florida draws a record low 11,000 fans for their home opener. Get that team out of there already.

Toronto was playing their 2nd home game and facing Pittsburgh, so it would have drawn wider attention if it were a/the day game. The reason "no one will watch hockey over college football" holds true isn't a lack of desire, its because there's no hockey to watch. Toronto is selling out that game either way, why not draw wider national attention than you otherwise would with every single other team playing later on?

I don't disagree with you but Canadians despise afternoon hockey. It gets terrible ratings. It's not even that they're watching anything else, they just hate watching hockey in the afternoon.

NBC doesn't show Canadian teams period.

I'm sure its possible I'm some extreme weirdo outlier, but there was zero but college football on this afternoon at a time when I was willing to watch something. Just feels like a self-fulfilling prophecy of acting like an inferior option.

What can the NHL do? It's television and money. If you were NBC, would you put an afternoon game on your main network? Before January?

Here's are some Canadian ratings numbers for the 2011 Hockey Day in Canada.
http://www.cbc.ca/revenuegroup/mobile/t ... r-cbc.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and 2013
http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2013/2/12/3 ... y-and-late" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I know the matchup is worse as Montreal-Toronto is a powerhouse but should Edmonton-Ottawa really get only 1/3rd of the Montreal-Toronto one and half the Vancouver-Calgary one? Put Toronto-Montreal at 4pm it wouldn't get close to 2 million people.

I'm with you, I like afternoon games. I've already said that Hockey Night in Canada should be a triple header. 5pm, 8pm, 11pm eastern. Yes I will go to a Flames game what starts at 9pm on a Saturday night or 3pm Saturday afternoon. But dumb tradition in Canada trumps all.

Boo! he's kicking the shit out of my team, the Montreal Canadiens!

edit - Final 7-1 for Tampa Bay. and I have Carey Price as my goalie, so i guess i'm doing horribly in the goalie stats. Think they pulled him after 4.

In their first periods of the season, Sharks' 7th defenseman Matt Irwin scored twice, and knuckle-dragging goon John Scott scored once. 3-0 after one. Braden Holtby ought to be ashamed of himself, because if John Scott scores on you, you ought to forfeit.

What a wild game that turned out to bed, Sharks in 6-5 in a shootout.

Flames won last night! They have 4 points so far on this 6 game road trip. That's 2 more points than I expected them to get already (Beating Edmonton was a sure thing)

if you follow any national hockey writers on twitter, an Edmonton game gets entertaining, there. Last night, they healthy scratched Jeff Petry, arguably their best defensive defenseman, and dressed two rookies, with predictable results. As the Kings beat them down, the wisecracks were constant.

eta: fun fact - one of the rookies was Donovan McNabb's nephew.
