2 questions. Where is having access to a football game on TV on the list of inviolable rights? And is it even worth it to compare NFL teams in terms of character? The proportion of felons on the field in a Ravens-Bengals match-up is a bigger reason to boycott the NFL than telecast availability. Some...

Pac Bell and PNC are my two favorite ballparks, and I've been to 25. Wrigley is incredible also.

I haven't been to alot of football stadiums, but there's nowhere I'd rather go than Notre Dame Stadium on a beautiful fall Saturday.

The Book of Fate by Brad Meltzer is next on my list - I don't remember what it's about as it has been on my wait list from the library for so long. But my brother-in-law gave it the thumbs up so I'll try it out. I met Meltzer at a Save AmeriCorps event a few years ago. As a minor Clinton functionar...

I haven't read enough of Baldwin or Morrison to put them in my favorites, so my list is as limited as the rest. Humorists and genre writers don't get enough credit, so I'd give honorable mention to Dorthy Parker, Thurber and Woody Allen. And maybe Raymond Chandler. But the best of the best? Twain Fa...

Last month conventional wisdom said Hillary, meaning Dems lose in 2008. Conventional wisdom also says Obama has to wait his turn. I think it's the other way around. Obama creates genuine excitement. He'll play to win in the next two years, and Hillary will play not to lose. Obama runs and I'll even ...

Right now, Peter Angelos's head is about to explode:

"If I sign Soriano, it will fill a huge hole on my team. But that's not the issue-- it will also piss off the people I most want to piss off in the whole world.

But I'll have to pay him what he asks."

I got two from last month: I'm lobbying on the Hill. Just for the day, I don't do it for a living. I meet Tom Osborne (R-NE). He's talking about the importance of cutting federal funding for these sloppy duplicative programs that serve families. I wince, and I think, man you beat the bejesus out of ...

I don't want to make this a referendum on Holtz, because I agree with everyone that he's a cartoon these days. But in his defense, he knows this, and has never claimed to be anything but a lucky idiot with a modicum of homespun wisdom and a capacity for laughing at himself. "When everyone else ...

Favorite Coaches of all time

I'm watching baseball to minutes ago. Due to the miracle of ESPN, you never need to watch commercials. And within 5 minutes, I get reports on the Tigers, Yankees, Steelers and ND. And in 90 seconds, I see these guys on TV: Holtz, Leyland, Torre, Cowher, Weis. And putting no thought into it at all, I...

Am in my third attempt on Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie, and I am now halfway through. Cumulatively. I love the book, but it's intellectual demands on me are greater than that of television. And these days, TV usually wins.

My oldest is 5, and we came up with Helpful Habit Points. They have things they have to do around the house, and when they do helpful things without being asked, or are really on the ball about helping, they get a point. Some days they get 3, some days they get none. When they get 15, we give them a...

Actually, the '95 Tribe is a good guess. Pena played more than Sandy, and Omar hadn't learned to hit yet, but you've got Winfield on the bench, and Giles and Burnitz in PT roles have an OPS+ above 200 apiece. And the rest are closer to 150 than 100, even with Paul Sorrento. Tell me if I'm wrong, but...

Hey, how do you do that cool linky thing?

The early 70's Bucs have it except for Gene Alley, and the 90's Bucs have it except for Jose Lind.

The Brothers K (Duncan) is in my top 5 books of all time. Duncan makes Kinsella look like John Grisham. Am now reading "American Tabloid" by James Ellroy. Hoffa, Hughes, Hoover, Castro, the Mob, the Kennedys, 1958-1963. Ellroy is one harsh dude, but the writing is breakneck thrills. First ...
