Is that Jeff Bagwell and Julio Franco's lovechild?

I think I saw this kid last year in the CWS. If I recall, he said he was having back pain and that stance helped get some relief.

I sense some HBPs in that kid's future.

Expecting that the guy more or less "stands up" to swing, how is an umpire expected to call balls and strikes with any accuracy?

That batting stance alleviates back pain?

He goes into a much more normal stance before the ball is pitched.

You never know. The couple times my back has gone out I found some strange looking positions that helped immensely.

My son imitated the stance in the backyard for about a week after we saw the kid on TV.

I can't help but ask . . . if he assumes a much more normal stance before the ball is pitched, why the bizarre stance beforehand? Can't he stand upright, for instance? Or some Mickey Tettleton type of Norman Bates stance? Is he so afflicted that the Knoblauchian torsion coil is how he actually walks around day to day?

vandwagon is right, though. I've had back discomfort forever and, particularly when trying to sleep, you mangle yourself into the most unimaginable positions.

"That's comfortable? You can sleep like that? You look like you've just fallen off of a 1500-foot cliff."
"No, no. It's fine. For the moment."

Just to clarify, I'm not mocking the kid. I doubt he's doing it to stand out or to get attention. I wouldn't wish a dodgy back on anyone. It's a life-long malady.

So . . . the ump calls pitches strictly to a zone? Has to, right?

Apparently he developed it with input from a sports psychologist. I think it's stupid as hell but it does make for some unique jiffs.

It's also possible that he inadvertently took advice from a Sports Psychic.

His average plummeted to .128, but he did find his lost dog!
