Kudos to Jack White for helping save Detroit's Masonic Temple.

I'm admittedly biased because I was married there, but it's one of the most incredible buildings of its type in the country -- the largest Masonic Temple in the country and some absolutely remarkable history. For example, the chapel I was married in is a scale replica of Westminster Abbey. And the ballroom is an art deco masterpiece.

For me and BFJ, but the film Sunshine Daydream a film made around the Dead's 8/27/72 concert at the Oregon Country Fair has been remastered and will be shown nationwide on 8/1/13.

So China Cat (one of the first Dead tunes penned by Robert Hunter, btw, and written while Hunter was at a commune in Taos (the big hot springs at the beginning of Easy Rider)) one of your least favourite. What are the top 3-5 Dead tunes for Howard?

Bapo! introduced me to the Tune-Yards album Whokill and I can;t stop listening to the damn thing. It is wacky and bizarre, but I love it. It takes a good 3 listens for it to sink in, but damn I love this album. Here is a clip of her/them from Austin City Limits:

Pretty Lights - Around the Block

According to the review I read, instead of digging through boxes of old albums to sample from, he first recorded all original music and then sampled from that. Plus, everything was recorded on pre-1970's equipment for the "feel" (whatever that means, I can't tell any difference.)

Either way, it's a pretty groovy tune.

Awhile back, I was flipping the channels and came upon a tv show called Totally Biased, which came across like an African-American version of The Daily Show. And, they had a musical guest that was something completely different - not in the music but in who was playing it. Like Living Color meets Black Sabbath meets The Jackson 5. Three sixth-graders from Brooklyn playing their own power trio heavy metal. No singer. Called Unlocking the Truth.

Forgot about that show. I heard Bell on the WTF podcast, and really liked him. Saw a bunch of clips of the show, and it's really funny. Kind of Daily Show meets Chappelle Show. That group needs to team up with the 6 yo girl who sings death metal style. My kids saw her on America's Got Talent, and they are obsessed with her. The new Jason Isbell album, Southeastern, is his best solo album yet. Unlike a lot of musicians, getting sober seems to have really done him a lot of good. Pretty impressive version of "Stockholm" on Letterman last night (with his wife Amanda Shires joining in on violin/harmony).

I've long been a Joe Walsh guy. And ever cut I hear from his recent album, Analog Man I like, but I haven't gotten around to sitting down and listening to the whole thing. I'd heard this tune a few times, and never bothered to listen to the lyrics, knew it had something to do with his recovery from alcohol and drugs. But man if this is not a wonderful little tune, simple but catchy and meaningful lyrics. Nothing but recycled clichés from recovery language, that any AA member has heard thousands of times, but combined and rhymed just right. Maybe the only reason it strikes me so is because of the addiction/recovery experience. I hope not.

3 Freddy Mercury & Michael Jackson duets coming out this fall. Recorded in 1983 and being finished up by Queen guitarist Brian May. Apparently 3 songs was all Freddy could take of Michael Jackson.\

Best part of what I have read about this

While the songs were originally recorded decades ago, the project was never completed on account of a truly bizarre spat. Jackson reportedly brought a llama to the recording studio during the sessions with Mercury, something the late singer was less than pleased with.

“They got on well,” Mercury’s manager Jim Beach said in an interview. “Except for the fact that I suddenly got a call from Freddie, saying, ‘Miami, dear, can you get on over here… You’ve got to get me out of here. I’m recording with a llama… I’ve had enough and I want to get out.’”
