Re: The Weather
That was here earlier in the week, then we were supposed to get ~ a foot of snow (ended up being nothing more than a dusting) the worst part was going from 70+ to the teens in less than 24 hours.
Did you see that ludicrous display last night?
Re: The Weather
During the Buccos games this past series in Arizona, the broadcasters were going on about how chilly it was in Phoenix while PGH had 80+ degree temps.

Re: The Weather

Wow, this is cray. I had no idea weird ass shizz was going on, stuck down in South FL where it's just hot all the time.
40-degree differences between Pitt/Buffalo and Springfield/Chicago are wild.
If I would have made the 100 mile trek to college from home today, the temp would have dropped 30 degrees.

Eric Francis reporting that water is now up to row 10 in the Saddledome. Having been there a few times, I can't fathom how that is even possible. Hope you and your family (and your hot interns) are safe, Degen.

I am fine. My parents and I are in the same neighbourhood in one of the higher places in the city. My parents have taken in my uncles family who had to evacuate.
It's really crazy to just have the news on and see the city flood. City's done a great job, we get updates from the mayor every hour. It would suck to be a police officer, being wet and cold trying to protect abandoned areas.

They might! The airport is still open and running as scheduled, it's up north and not near the flooding. Getting to the airport might be a problem though.sancarlos wrote:I have some good friends visiting Banff right now. They were supposed to fly home today from Calgary, but that ain't happening.

So where did this water come from? Are there creeks and rivers near downtown Calgary, or is this overflow that the city infrastructure couldn't handle? (That can't be it...)

Calgary has been dealing with a double whammy of overflowing water from two rivers that run through the city and converge downtown.
And Albertans are being warned that the worst is yet to come.

I am very inefficient at reading previous posts and links. Is it bad upstream as well or just at the junction?Scottie wrote:From the National Post:Brontoburglar wrote:So where did this water come from? Re: The Weather
Rivers and creeks.
It's caused by heavy rainfall. Calgary has recorded 8 inches of rain so far in June. There was a huge storm on Wednesday night in the area that has caused the rivers to overflow.
The Bow River comes from the Rockies runs right through the heart of Calgary (West to East). My downtown office is right on this river, I walk along the riverfront almost every lunch hour.
The Elbow River comes from the West, comes into Calgary into the Bow.

Re: The Weather
It's bad everywhere. The junction is getting the debris from the upstream.

Re: The Weather
The extent of this is massive. Banff is being evacuated (I had assumed it was at a relatively high altitude, guess not) and the river that runs through Lethbridge is now over-spilling its banks. Banff is about a hundred miles west of Calgary; Lethbridge is about 150 miles south of Calgary.
Huge stretches of the Trans-Canada highway are closed; heavy rain is causing enormous mudslides.

Re: The Weather
It's up to row 15 now and rising by the hour. The Jumbotron has been destroyed, dressing rooms completely underwater. I'm assuming that the gigantic center-ice clock had been lowered to floor level; that's typically what's done to those creatures when not in use.Johnny Hotcakes wrote:Eric Francis reporting that water is now up to row 10 in the Saddledome. Love the fact that the Flames are already using this to promote that they have plans for a new arena.
Re: The Weather
That jumbotron came with a $3.5-million price tag. Yikes. The Junior team plays in that building, too.

Re: The Weather
It would be nice if there were some way to divert floodwaters to regions that could use the water. If we can build a pipeline across Alaska to deliver oil and pipelines across the country to deliver gas, I wonder why there hasn't been some thought to building pipelines from the midwest to the southwest to deliver floodwaters. Seems like the Mississippi and Missouri flood every few years.

cost vs. benefit I think. Oil gets transported everyday. Floods, as devastating as they are, only happen once in awhile.
