Replay official decision means nothing in Rio. Swiss beach volleyball complained enough about a terrible replay decision and they restarted the game. Chinese have a good big girl. She was fun to watch.

9 million commercials, no flow, should have started earlier on a Sunday, etc. Some of that commercial time should have been recaps of other action at least.degenerasian wrote:what was bad about it?A_B wrote:Jesus christ that coverage last night was so fucking bad.

They could have easily started at 6, showed all the gymnastics then went to swimming. I get that there are breaks between races and I appreciate them showing the swimming live, but it was just a mess, IMO.tennbengal wrote:And they packaged the gymnastics so it wasn't live and I ended up knowing what had happened ahead of them showing it.A_B wrote:9 million commercials, no flow, should have started earlier on a Sunday, etc. Some of that commercial time should have been recaps of other action at least.degenerasian wrote:what was bad about it?A_B wrote:Jesus christ that coverage last night was so fucking bad.

Re: 2016 Rio Olympics Thread
hmmm why doesn't NBC just show the crowd.
Here in between races they preview the next race and the host broadcaster always shows the arena entertainment and shots of hot girls in the crowd which in Brazil there are a lot of. Heck they showed the crowd doing the wave for about two minutes. I guess I'm just used to live coverage and don't mind pauses in action.
Speaking of noise, always find it funny that a sport like gymnastics which requires a lot of concentration seems to have the most distractions. Between the announcer, cheering and the music, while they go through their routine must be crazy hard.

I watched a little bit online Saturday night and the commercials would just randomly pop up in the middle of the event - women's weightlifting. I don't think I missed anything though, it would come back to where it left off as far as I could tell. Still a little odd.

I've watched a few clips here and there on either my Facebook feed or via a Reddit thread, but the overwhelming complaints have been how NBC talks to its audience like 3rd graders and makes you watch the commentators commentate about them instead of just watching them.
If you want to actually watch them here, use a VPN and watch through either the British or Canadian internet feeds. It's pathetic.

yeah I've watched feeds where there are no commentators. The Olympics graphics showing points/times is amazing.
A sport like swimming is pretty self explanatory. But I'm a sports-watching person so maybe it's different for me.

Re: 2016 Rio Olympics Thread
What's frustrating is that NBC obviously realizes the value of incorporating the crowd atmosphere into the broadcast, especially during the slow moments before the event, because its soccer people do such a good job of it in covering the EPL.
And a swim meet like this does not have a lot of dead periods--it is actually quite efficiently run, and the longest breaks are for medal ceremonies that NBC cuts up and shows anyway.
With that said, last night was a lot better than I was expecting--they showed all of the races, even the semifinals and the events where Americans were not favored.

Re: 2016 Rio Olympics Thread
My wife is as much of a nut about the Olympics as I am, thankfully. She DVR'd the NBC (mothership) coverage and we just had the other channel on all day, checking in and backing up for stuff we cared about. I'd say I watched close to 20 hours or so over overall coverage, but when you fast forward through stuff like the first 5 hours (!) of the men's road race, you know... It's not really a fully 20 hours.
Frankly, I don't know how people could watch the NBC coverage without the ability to fwd through the commercials. When you watch it that way, it's actually a pretty great viewing experience.

I just like watching the crowd and all the different flags. I've never been to a summer games. Maybe Tokyo 2020 is a plan.
That said, unless you're watching the live feeds. Our network live coverage is heavily edited. Move around to where Canadians are competing and if there aren't any then maybe switch to a big event being concluded or show highlights.

So far, French athlètes are on a disturbing 3-day run of near-misses and heartbreaking losses. Special mention to both tennis doubles (#1 and 2 seeds) and judokas. A record in olympic futility may be nearing.
Re: 2016 Rio Olympics Thread
Well, Alize Cornet has Serena in a first set tiebreaker as I type this. Cornet has beaten Serena the last three times they've played. That might make you feel a bit better if she wins.
eta: Serena takes the tiebreak. Perhaps nevermind.

Ledecky just broke the OR in the 800m freestyle her prelim. heat. If you haven't been paying attention, this is her slam dunk-no one is even going to come close event.
I've got the Olympics on here in my office with the sound way down, but watching from time to time and noticing... She really REALLY seems to be using the least amount of effort possible, but still crushing the field.
After the heat, they showed a close up of her stroke... Maniac was doing a warm-up drill, where you barely kick and swim using just arms.
This young lady is simply amazing. She swam the 8th best 800m free in history and she didn't kick. She is going to destroy the WR tonight.
