Counterpoint: If this were the US and some other country's version of Lochte probably made up and armed robbery story, wouldn't we cheer pursuing him?
Re: 2016 Rio Olympics Thread
Of course we would.mister d wrote:Counterpoint: If this were the US and some other country's version of Lochte probably made up and armed robbery story, wouldn't we cheer pursuing him?
I think Lochte is going to take a big hit when this is all said and done, particularly since his means to make $ off his swimming is primarily through endorsements.
Psst kids: the coverup is ALWAYS worse than the crime.

I'm not seeing a motive for making up this story yet. But then again, I'm also not seeing a whole lot of brainpower at work here.
Re: 2016 Rio Olympics Thread
Remember, the only necessary motive for lying here could have been "adult child doesn't want to explain to his mom how he lost his wallet".
Re: 2016 Rio Olympics Thread
I think in order to perhaps uncover a motive for making up the story, one must get into the dynamics of the relationship between Ryan and his mommy?Rex wrote:I'm not seeing a motive for making up this story yet. But then again, I'm also not seeing a whole lot of brainpower at work here.

Re: 2016 Rio Olympics Thread
Can you imagine how much more fun this is if Ryan tells his mom then goes to sleep it off, wakes up with it now a major story and instead of sticking with it goes "I was having sex with a prostitute, someone else there stole my wallet and I lied to my mom about it"?

Sometimes I really wonder, leaving aside the NFL/MLB/NBA, why some sports are a regular fixture on TV and some are a once-in-4-years event. I mean I know the answer to that, but I still think that just about any sport can be made popular with some investment and the right emphasis on look and feel, crowd atmosphere/fan culture and TV broadcast quality. How else to explain why college football is popular, right?
Maybe the volleyball of the 80s wasn't compelling enough, but Joe is right--the game is just flat nasty now, it's what the NBA thinks it is. Someone ought to be able to tap into that.

Or, maybe these guys are very much full of shit and they were up to shenanigans that are actually, you know, illegal.

I'm not saying this is the full story, but it sure sounds like these guys got into some low level nonsense and then for some reason felt the need to concoct a cover story. I'm still not clear WHY the story needed to be told. As in... Were they being pressed on why they arrived back at 7am by US officials, so they came up with Scary Man with Gun?

Luke Winn (one of SI's college hoops writers) played HS volleyball and has been raving about the men's volleyball competition on Twitter. He says that Brazil's setter is his favorite athlete of the entire Olympics.Rex wrote:degenerasian wrote:for sure, if you ever get a chance you have to go see it live. According to a Deadspin post, Lochte told his mom who then decided to tell authorities which created this entire mess.

Thing is...if this plays out the way it appears to be, how shortsighted must one be to think he'd get away with this while essentially a pretty vast representation of the world's journalists are all currently in Rio?

I was actually talking about this with my wife last night. It's creepy as fuck. She was at the Olympics too, knocked out in her first heat, 100m hurdles. I'm surprised she did not have a higher profile.

Re: 2016 Rio Olympics Thread
So this is interesting....the USA 4x100 women's relay will be given a re-run (not to be confused with Rerun) tonight because their failed baton pass was caused by an obstruction by one of the Brazil runners. Does this mean they just go out there on their own, and they can knock out the last qualifier? Looks like the last qualifier is actually a tie between Canada and China--will they also have to send those two back out?
Re: 2016 Rio Olympics Thread
If by not zero you mean 100%, I agree. Not much for hookers but trouble finds you in Rio.

Do they have to re-run or were tehy just given a pass into the final? Like now there will be 9 teams instead of 8.Rex wrote:So this is interesting....the USA 4x100 women's relay will be given a re-run (not to be confused with Rerun) tonight because their failed baton pass was caused by an obstruction by one of the Brazil runners. EDIT: No, some sort of Re-run. That is weird considering the scenario you mentioned.

The US will re-run. If they beat the joint Chinese-Canadian time then they will also have to re-run.

Not adding a lane, solo time trial tonight at 7pm. If they beat China and Canada's time (they tied at 42.70), then China and Canada have to do a head to head to see which of them goes through.
This. is. AWESOME!

This might be the perfect twitter day; a widely known, non-important story (that some people will see as important) involving an objectively dislikable protagonist, sometimes spiraling off into sub-tangents. I'm having a great time.

So now the IAAF is saying that when expanded to 1/1000th of a second Canada finished ahead of China so Canada is safely in.
The US will run solo and if they beat China's time, they will replace them.
China has now officially protested the USA's reinstatement back into the relay.
Stay tuned....

The US deserves a place in the race, one way or the other. China knows it's curtains. On what grounds do you deny the US here? Pretty clearly knocked out of the race due to Brazilian interference.*
* - BTW, I was losing my mind because the NBC guy was at first saying the US was the one over in Brazil's lane and they were clearly at fault. WTF? Watching it live I was like, huh, that was fucking weird. But they are showing replays from a head on view and I immediately saw the interference. WTF was this guy looking at? And it went on for quite some time. It wasn't like, one replay. It was weird.

I was watching with the sound really low, but it seemed like the possibility of interference didn't even occur to the broadcast team until Felix brought it up in the interview, even though they had shown multiple replays by then.
Again, Ian Darke, now. I don't care if he's never called a race before.
