I'm really enjoying Gladwell's Revisionist History.
This week is about Wilt and the refusal of players to shoot foul shots underhanded.

attn: ryan and other west wing fans.
west wing weekly is co-hosted by josh malina and has various notable guests discussing ww episodes one-by-one in serial order starting with the pilot. i think they just finished season one. i was just got wind of this saturday, so i haven't listened to any yet, but i can't imagine that this podcast would be a waste of the time for the ww fan, considering malina is a sorkin favorite.

Relly liked that episode. Just subscribed for more.
And I mentioned it before, but the Dead Authors Podcast is very often hilariously funny. The L. Ron Hubbard episode is outstanding.

One of my happiest memories was from back at university in Montreal, when as Sports Editor of a school paper (and radio sportscaster), I got to interview the Spaceman. He was living near Montreal at the time, and was a legend in the area.Johnnie wrote:Spaceman Bill Lee on Jonah Keri's podcast is a must fucking listen.
A 30 minute interview where I may have said 20 words. Afterwards, he was hilarious with a couple friends of mine who had been waiting to get an autograph. We offered to buy him a beer in the campus pub in the building. What followed was an amazing couple of hours that ended when his wife came to pick him up.
A super guy, a good drinker, and very generous with his money and time.

Lenny Dykstra appeared on Adam Carolla's podcast a couple weeks ago to promote his new book (his appearance starts about 48 minutes in). I can not speak to the truthfulness of his stories, but they certainly are interesting.
Also, if you want to hear a lot of discussion about the size of Darryl Strawberry's penis, this is the podcast for you.

Bringing this over from the Grantland thread...
The same friend of mine got name-dropped in a second Jonah Keri podcast (Brian Gewirtz). For him to get the hat trick, Keri would have to interview an MLB Network host and I think he mentioned he's got one coming with Brian Kenny.
Just because degen bumped this thread with a mention of Jonah Keri's podcast and it's only of interest to me, so not big enough for the "brushes" thread.DSafetyGuy wrote:A friend of mine got name-dropped in part one of that (the producer for both of them at MLB Network).BSF21 wrote:He's got a podcast on Nerdist network now. I couldn't finish that Keri-Gewirtz podcast. I can only handle so much discussion about the N.Y. Mets. I've started to listen to "Presidential", a podcast done by the Washington Post. Every episode focuses on a President, and tries to dig deeper then just the standard knowledge. They are up to Eisenhower, but I've only listened to the ones about Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Madison.

Just started listening to Harmontown and I love it. It's Dan Harmon's (creator of Community and Rick and Morty) podcast and he just lays everything on the table. The first episode i listened to, he talk about shitting the bed, literally. And for a long time, in great detail.
When I work alone, I only listen to podcasts. Here are the ones i listen to regularly. A lot of them have probably been mentioned before.

I went back to the revolutionspodcast.com. The Haitian Revolution story is fucking nuts. My sum knowledge was 'there was a slave rebellion, led by this dude named Toussaint L'Overture, and they became an independent nation.' So much more, so fascinating.

So I have been listening to Lance Armstrong's podcast. Some of it has been pretty annoying. Listening him to talk from his platform I feel like you get a better view of who he is (and in my case validating some of my negative perceptions). However facinating that his most recent one is with actor Ben Foster who plays Lance Armstrong in the movie "The Program".

Thanks, I'll catch that. Curious Evans' thoughts about building a bullpen. Second time's a charm?
One of the many fascinating aspects of the Hatian story; generally France cared little about color, but suddenly in Haiti, around 1770, they instituted a bunch of racial apartheid laws taking away rights from free blacks, regardless of wealth. All of a sudden, middle class and wealthy blacks were significantly repressed, lasted well into the revolutionary period (French and Hatian revolutions.) Along with periodic overt moves to re-enslave some/all blacks on the island. Utterly fascinating.

yup and I think Duncan mentions this. If you were a free black and went to university in France you were treated equally as a scholar but then went back to Haiti and was repressed. The French really learned a lesson from that mistaken 1770 law.

Yes. It wasn't about race it was about class and religion. First, almost all IndoChinese were Buddhists or Taoist. If any converted to Catholisism, that's a point in their favor. Immediate acceptance. Second was education. The French revamped the education system in the cities for the better (including changing Vietnamese from characters to alphabet) and those students who rose to the top regardless of race were considered equal. If you were uneducated..white, black, native, chinese... you worked on the farms and railroads.howard wrote:Did the French have similar attitudes toward the Asiatic races? It is a surprisingly good show. Baldwin, as he will tell you and try to show you on every episode, is just really fucking smart. He asks good questions and is actively listening and engaging (some interviewers suck at this, and are just moving down their list.)
I get that he can come off as insufferable, but that's mainly when someone is interviewing HIM. When the arrangement is reversed, you get around 40 minutes of intelligence and insight into a pretty broad spectrum of interesting people. They're not all winners, but that's typically because of my personal lack of interest in who's being interviewed that week, not because of the quality of the show.
You can lead a horse to fish, but you can't fish out a horse.
Re: Podcasts
Also the production is very different from other podcasts I listen to. His voice and the tone is mellow, like soft Jazz. Or his old NPR skit from Saturday Night Live.
