That sequence was just awful for Clemson. Give up the big 3rd down yardage, then the 4th down conversion, then the double pass, then poor play on the touchdown. Just bad.

It doesn't take this long to affirm a damn onside kick recovery.

First Clemson win over Bama since 1905? Damn.
Best Championship game since the Vince Young Game?
My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Tied with Mel Ott at Number 25 is Miguel Cabrera at 511.

Cuz Saban lost primarily because he had a teenaged QB up against a generational-type QB. It wasn't the Russians.

Seriously. It's such a predictable shtick too: just take athletes universally regarded as great (LeBron, Aa. Rodgers, Watson, etc.) and offer counterintuitive "takes" bashing them. And he gets paid millions a year to do that.
On a related note, Dabo Swinney specifically called Colin Cowherd a fraud in his postgame press conference, which was funny. Rough night for FS1.

The Film Room broadcast showed a replay of the onside kick while it was being reviewed. 'Bama's front line seemed almost frozen, starting to back up in expectation of a normal kick, then hesitating before coming up, allowing Clemson to basically have a team meeting to shield off the ball.
The last thing the Tide was expecting at that point. Can't imagine the pressure on the kicker to just get it ten yards, though.

I turned it off after the TE TD with a minute left in the 3rd. Woke up around 1 with an alert from NPR of all places saying Clemson won. Crazy.

NPR spent a few minutes on the game this morning on my drive in. News director must be a Clemson grad.

I had that exact same thought. What would be the downside to Alabama just hugging and grabbing the receivers on every play until the clock ran out?

Probably only had to do it once, which would have forced Clemson into the field goal. But I'm assuming it was Saban making the defensive equivalent of going for the win, thinking his defense could get a stop. Which it hadn't been able to do in the 4th.
Also, game doesn't end on a Defensive penalty.

Yeah, but would have forced Clemson into a difficult decision. Go for the win from the 1 or have to kick the FG for OT.

in college football the ball is placed on the 2? that makes the decision to go for it more risky.

Ball was already on the 2 and they had time for one more play so another PI would have put it at the 1.

Well, if that was gonna be ALabama's move, they likely would have been in super press coverage to tie them up immediately.

Yes, but they don't put time back on the clock. So say every Alabama DB puts a bear hug on their coverage responsiblility...PI/Holding on Bama, but time runs off the clock for the play. Eventually, Clemson is going to have to kick the FG for the tie.

They'll run out of time. It will eventually be an untimed down, with Clemson either going for the win (and Alabama playing straight up D) or kicking a FG for the tie.

I'm guess I'm assuming they're going for the win no matter what. They barely got the winning play under the gun anyway, clock operation being what it is
