I can't decide if Craig Finn's latest is actually enjoyable or I just hated his other solo work so much I was expecting crap and it's not crap.

Re: Getting the spins
It's a little of both. I didn't really like either of his first two solo albums that much, but this is much better.Giff wrote:I can't decide if Craig Finn's latest is actually enjoyable or I just hated his other solo work so much I was expecting crap and it's not crap.

I've gone from really disliking Father John Misty to really enjoying his new one. Pretty stellar release day: the aforementioned, New Pornographers, Cory Brannan (has one of the better protest songs on it, for lack of a better word), The Weeks and Future Islands.

I keep hearing that the new Father John Misty is really good, but after seeing him be a total dick/diva (dickva?) at the KEXP benefit show in December, I'm pretty skeptical.Giff wrote:I've gone from really disliking Father John Misty to really enjoying his new one. I know! But I caught his SNL performances and Total Entertainment Forever will most likely end up one of my favorite songs of the year.DaveInSeattle wrote:I keep hearing that the new Father John Misty is really good, but after seeing him be a total dick/diva (dickva?) at the KEXP benefit show in December, I'm pretty skeptical.Giff wrote:I've gone from really disliking Father John Misty to really enjoying his new one. The new Aimee Mann is fantastic.

Swirlies? Not familiar with them. Chapterhouse? Yes. Whirlpool is really a quintessential shoegazing LP. Wish they'd put out more music.DaveInSeattle wrote:And its amazing. Sorry. I blanked on the name. I know the Swirlies. Boston. There's a mistake in my brain's wiring that refuses to adequately remember them autonomously, because what happened is I folded their existence into that of Galaxie 500, who more or less have tears in their eyes as they shoegaze.

Roger Waters is coming out with his first album since 1992's Amused to Death.
Re: Getting the spins
New Mountain Goats song is pretty sweet. And a bit of a departure from their normal stuff. Interesting that they're doing a whole album's take on goth.

A friend turned me on to Clay Otis today. Great stuff. He passed away in the fall. It's worth a listen on Spotify. This track is a bit slow, but there's a lot of diversity in his songs. Kinda reminds me of Badly Drawn Boy, and Beck, in that regard. (he doesn't sound at all like Badly Drawn Boy or Beck)

Digging it. Excited for the new album. Needs to tour with RK and I'll take a year off life and just follow them around like a Deadhead.Brontoburglar wrote:https://youtu.be/tZaeKwgS7wg

Downtown Reno is beyond fucked because of Dierks Bentley concert. The only thing I hate more than bro-country is when it prevents me from getting a fucking beer.

They've released two cryptic (a la Radiohead) social media posts with music lately, but they don't really sound like songs.mister d wrote:Not yet to my knowledge.Giff wrote:Did they release a new single along with the announcement?

So we should probably spend 10,000 words over 100 posts on this one ...

First take is this song would fit perfect on the second half of "High Violet" if they didn't overproduce the fuck out of it. All the underlying stuff I love about them is there but it's trending in the wrong direction even beyond "Trouble Will Find Me".

Are you ready to write them off as on the decline? Boxer is not walking through that door. I like it, and expect it to grow on me like everything else of theirs has ever done.mister d wrote:So we should probably spend 10,000 words over 100 posts on this one ...

Re: Getting the spins
Yeah, there's zero chance I love an album more than "Boxer", I was just hoping for a return closer to that sound. I definitely don't dislike this new one, I just know exactly how I could like it more.
