Intellectually I can't justify it in any way shape or form.
But God help me, I'm addicted. It has been a fairly major part of my life for so long that it's hard to quit.

You always have to wait for the old guy to die off before you can get into the position and he was here before me (plus I haven't done anything in Archives since grad school. I'm a systems guy.)
Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

Re: Wither Colin Kaepernick
I feel sick watching the NFL this year, but mostly because the Jets have the worst team in my lifetime. The 1-15 Kotite team was miles ahead of this year's team. My interest has dropped immensely over the past 5 years. If it wasn't for fantasy, I wouldn't follow at all. In the past, I record every Jets game, and hit the 30 second FF button between most plays. You can watch a game in 45 minutes to an hour. This year, I had no desire to watch. I usually watch a highlight show, but I just don't care enough to even do that. Not sure how much is the Jets sucking, me having way too much going on to spend time on football, or just losing interest.
My wife is the Chief Marketing Officer for one of the Jets' biggest sponsors, so I have to go to 3 games with her this year, as well as a private a preseason practice. In the past, I would have been stoked, but now it's a chore, and I'm bummed I have to miss coaching 8 yo girls soccer games to go on the field at Metlife. The practice was horrible. Extremely obvious drop in talent from last year, and I didn't have a single player I cared about. At least last year, I could watch Marshall and Revis, and Geno Smith was amazing to watch in drills. His agility, arm strength and accuracy were astounding.

Russell Wilson looks hurt according to a bunch of people. Too bad there isn't some other mobile QB that might be able to step in for him so he could fully heal. Shame.

I watched the 49er/Seahawk game on Sunday. Wilson was running all over the field for the Seahawks and pretty much won the game by himself. If Wilson isn't hurt now, he will be at some point, because the Seattle offensive line looks terrible.

Clearly, Matt Cassel and Brandon Weeden are just better fits than Kaepernick for an offense designed around Marcus Mariota's skill set. Like how Jay Cutler was such a great fit in Miami...
It really is astounding how much this country fears and despises any form of black activism. But at least some guys linked arms on the sidelines to show that football is about "unity."

It's a good sentiment but saying that Kaepernick should sit down with Trump to discuss the issues makes an awfully big assumption that Trump has any interest in listening to the other side or finding some level of understanding. There's an awful lot of evidence that Trump is a flat out white supremacist, so the notion that Kaepernick could productively discuss race issues with him is a stretch. It's more likely that Trump would just take such a meeting as an opportunity to berate Kaepernick to score points with his base.

" No more choosing sides, no more 'for or against.' "
Sorry, but that is exactly the mindset that led us to the point where cops feel free to kill unarmed black men and the 1% feels free to grab everything they can and say fuck you to everyone else.

And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Yeah, the notion that "both sides" need to be more reasonable doesn't work too well when one side is trying to follow traditional norms while the other side uses every possible lever of power to entrench its power. The Merrick Garland nonsense tells you everything you need to know about whether the Right has any interest in compromise or respect for norms. So the notion that the Left should focus even more on playing nice doesn't cut it for me. I'd argue that the shock value of Kaepernick's protest made it far more effective than if he did something like buying dinners for police officers to "seek an understanding."
ETA: What was a more effective way to get people focused on police brutality and systematic injustice, Kaepernick's protest or Obama's "Beer Summit" with a Cambridge Police Officer?

Couldn't agree more.
Trump would either say that he demanded that Kaepernick call off the protest or say that even though they couldn't reach an agreement, Colin K. loves the Bedminster golf course.

I agree with what you guys are saying completely. I'm glad he said something, but he should have gone farther. He didn't because the headline "Former Green Beret has words for Trump" just muddies everything further.
There is a "right" and "wrong" here. There is also a "suck it up, buttercup" aspect as well. It's "Don't like people protesting during a song honoring cloth? Too bad, that's their right." In a place like America where symbolism and nationalism are retarded (I'm always going to use that word, Pruitt), this is the result -- conservative triggered snowflakes who rail against liberal triggered snowflakes don't have self awareness.
I'm lucky to have not known someone who died in combat or was seriously injured. But I still understand the "flag draped coffin and TAPS" aspect of my service. I get that that is a solemn moment in time to praise their life and service. So, the extension of "play the anthem everywhere" is a nice gesture...in theory.
But like with all things, nice gestures mission creep into "do it or you're a piece of shit." I see it at work constantly. Some rule or "gentleman's agreement" becomes twisted.
The maddening thing is no one goes to the root of the problem and dissects the nuance. It's "us v. them" every step of the way.

Now The Fun Really Begins
The NFL players' union said it would support the grievance, which was filed through the arbitration system that's part of the league's collective bargaining agreement.

This is another interesting detail. As context, Reid was one of the first 49er players to kneel with Kaepernick.

Yea, this is gunna be my "must read" for the day.
I seriously cannot believe the level to which nationalism and symbol worship in America goes and the logical fallacy-laced, full-throated defense of such behavior is made.
As a military dude who lived in countries with muted nationalistic tendencies the fact that such nothing drives a bottom line to the tune of millions of dollars is unfathomable. It makes no fucking sense. The reasons in which the protests are started is lost in a morass of bullshit all because feelings are hurt.
But I guess since this nothing is held sacred by people too blinded by money to give a shit, it's the perfect vehicle to expose these assholes in the first place.

One owner had complained that NBA commissioner Adam Silver got away with ordering players to stand because, unlike Goodell, he has a good relationship with the union.
Not saying Silver is a saint, but hey, it's almost like running your league in a way that doesn't make the players hate your fucking guts gives you more soft power.
