Of course there is no defense for what Gurriel did. But, I'll be very surprised if he is suspended for a World Series game.
He has to be, otherwise Manfred is saying “racist words/gestures are, of course, bad ... but these games are more important”. And there would be a subtext of treating a Cuban player more like a child who didn’t know it was wrong than an American who did and was suspended (Pillar). That helps no one.

Gurriel suspended five games without pay, starting in 2018. Supposedly he didn't get suspended for a WS game to avoid punishing the 24 other Astros players.
There IS a difference between suspending someone for an on-field infraction (ie throwing at someone’s head or an illegal slide vs a morality thing. I agree he should be suspended but this seems like a Solomonic solution.

That's freakin asinine.
The Astros deserved to be punished for the simple fact Gurriel committed an overtly racist act on TV cameras for the world to see, while a member of the Houston Astros, while under the tutelage of AJ Hinch. Who the hell cares about the 24 other players? Seriously? Manfred needs to get the fuck out of here with that nonsense.
Manfred should've been concerned first and foremost with MLB's image and the shit-staining Gurriel just gave it, not some penny-assed feelings that might've been hurt on the Astros' roster had he been suspended for a game in the World Series. Cuz as it stands, Manfred is against racism but what's important is the World Series!1!
If Bregman does that gesture and you can read his lips saying “oriental” or some shit, are they delaying? The onus on not punishing the other 24 is in Gurriel, if MLB wanted to worry about that allow them an exemption to replace him versus playing a game or games at 24 men.

I don't know how this ever ends. There have been many instances of Latin Americans saying Chino and doing the slant eyes. Tennis players, the spanish basketball team in Beijing etc... They use Chino like Gringo.
Is ignorance a defense? Yeah if Bregman does it, he's suspended today.

Yes.
Get rid of the Cleveland mascot.
Fuck MLB and their hypocrisy. How dare they discipline a player for a racist gesture. I am so sick of this bullshit. This whole country is so fucking backward regarding race, and I am out of fucking patience.
Who knows? Maybe, you were kidnapped, tied up, taken away and held for ransom.
Those days are gone forever
Over a long time ago
Oh yeah…

Thing is...if he’d mouthed the ‘N word’ to disparage a player of African descent (USA, Latin-American-born etc), he’d have been run out of the (likely entire) World Series on a rail. I don’t highlight this point to suggest one ethnicity gets any more sympathy than any other, except to say that Manfred sure seemed to join Yu Darvish up on that perch a little too easily. Darvish took the high road to let Gurriel’s words stand alone, not to invite any company. The gesture was offensive to Major League Baseball. Screw Gurriel’s heritage, and what Darvish said should hold no currency. If in Gurriel’s homeland it’s commonplace to denigrate other races, then lead by example that he was suspended for a game in the World Series for embarrassing Major League Baseball, period.
By suspending him ‘next year’, he’s essentially applied allowable levels of racism, and that, Mr. Manfred, was a patently stupid thing to do.
On Earth-2, Tanaka is mowing down Dodgers for the clinching win and his teammates are respectfully savoring this beautiful moment for our friends across the Pacific.
Using bullpens is the new thing but these playoffs it's caught up to them. These pens are on fumes. McCullers and Darvish might be needed on their throwing day tonight.

I remember thinking during/after Game 3 that the Dodgers perhaps should have punted that game. Their bullpen did well, and only gave up 1 run in 7+ innings, but they wound up using a lot of their better guys in a losing effort.
Just had one of the easiest gambling wins of my life. After the Dodgers scored in the top of the 7th the over/under in-game was still 16.5 -190 so I bet $100 on the over. With that Houston home run I cannot lose.
