NFL Week 1 2013

Post by A_B »

Are you ready for some foosball?

I'm gonna be on the road tonight for work when the first game kicks off. Will either finish my audiobook (turn of the screw) or fire it up on SiriusXm. Game time decision.
Hold on, I'm trying to see if Jack London ever gets this fire built or not.

I could have flown home from Michigan tonight, but I told my wife I needed to be in the office tomorrow morning, and will fly home tomorrow at noon.

(Psst... really, I just didn't want to miss the game...)

This stat surprised even me, but the Lions have the second-most home opener wins in NFL history with 50. (And yeah, they're the fourth oldest team in the NFL, but you'd assume the Giants or Steelers or Packers, etc. would have more.)

You mean they sucked until then? Because the Lions have sucked forever (well, other than the 50s).

They were like, basically the worst team ever. For real. The had a positive point differential in three seasons from 1933-1972.

They got relegated to the AFL (I think Modell and Irsay figured he'd get to the Super Bowl every year, playing in the other conference.)

So what other cities would give up an opening night home game for their SB championship football team because their baseball might be in a pennant race? Any?

And I thought there was nothing cool about B'more.

Are the Ravens afraid of the lightning?

Oh, it's like boxing; defending champ gets to enter the ring second, and often takes the opportunity to freeze the challenger.

(Let me go ahead and make my other joke now, a bit prematurely.)

Where is the other half of the Ravens starting defense?

(I'll go back to yanks/sox now)

People who drafted Julius Thomas on their fantasy teams are probably feeling smug about now. (And as I type this, Al Michaels says essentially the same thing!)

It wasn't up to the city, but that's ok.

I saw it live when NBC got that crotch shot. Hard to believe the cameraman wasn't trying for that shot - and we got it!

bfj - I've got to believe a lot of Baltimore residents are pissed at Angelos for not budging on the Orioles schedule. I think I would be.

Yeah, the great unwashed here are pissed. I'm not mad at all. It was up to the O's, Chicago and the MLBPA. The ire (IMO) should be directed at the NFL. They could have moved the game to Wednesday night very easily, but they came up with some bullshit about not playing on Rosh Hashannah. You know what last night was? Rosh Hashannah.

With the O's in a pennant race, I didn't want them to have to start some AAA guy to play a DH and possibly give away a game when it matters. I don't see what the big deal is. We still get a home opener next week and we get the Denver game out of the way. We don't travel any further west than Cincy the rest of the year.

People here just love to hate Angelos, I'm not one of them.

I don't know if the cameraman did that on purpose. He was just showing the girl normally and she turned around and bent over! What a routine!

I worked in television for years; it was my first real job, in fact. There are very, very, few accidents when it comes to camera shots. Everything is lined up; all camera techs are getting shots at all times. The director is calling for cameras to go live, from the control room, switching; picking and choosing what is appropriate (no pun) while he sees exactly what each camera is focused on. That's why whenever you see crowd shots there is typically some hottie(s) in the middle of it; the overwhelming majority of camera techs are men, as are the viewers. Pick out a decent rack in the crowd, linger on 'em. Plus the camera jockey that focused on the cheerleader was very near her and would have watched her repetitive and short standard routine a few times before they actually went live with it; likely rehearsed it, at least discussed it. And it's not a random cheerleader, she was handpicked. Accidental upskirt bum shot? Possible. Highly unlikely. Or what a producer would call a happy accident. The camera angle is certainly no accident. And her? She knew a camera was focused on her.

How many times have you been watching college football and seen a male cheerleader hoist a female cheerleader up over his head, balanced on his fully raised hand? Every single game, pretty much, several times. And the only camera angle is, well, up. There's only one reason to take that shot in the first place and it ain't school spirit.

this is the least I've been excited about the NFL

No idea why, and I'll still watch more football than 99.9% of the population. But just don't have the "THANK GOD THE NFL IS BACK" feeling.

looks like 3 games opened the scoring with a safety today? how many nfl sundays have featured 3 safeties in a week, let alone to open the games?

or maybe i'm not remembering safeties happening too much.
