Yeah, I'm perfectly happy to see Spoon but if I score free tickets for The National, I'll probably go see them instead.

Two great bands. Spoon’s better so long as you don’t think too hard. By that I mean, they’re waaaaaaaaaay easier on the ears. The National can get too less-obvious.

Gaslight Anthem playing Governor's Ball this summer for the 10 year anniversary of The '59 Sound.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Mon Oct 30, 2017 3:41 pm Superchunk was great, as expected, last night at the FEST in Gainesville. They still have it, even after all these years. Hum was quite good Saturday night too.
The 2 bands that immediately preceded Hum were horrendous (Career Suicide, and Iron Reagan). I really liked Iron Chic, who opened for Superchunk. They sounded like Gaslight Anthem at their most rocking, with less Springsteen influence.
The most surprising thing about the weekend was how great Gainesville has become. There were a ton of smaller spots that have opened up in the 18 years or so since I lived there that were very cool.
Good article with Brian Fallon, inteviewed by Steven Hyden.

Met 5 or 6 ppl who would be going to Spoon if not for The National. So dumb to book these shows same night in this town.

Slayer is retiring and doing one final world tour this year (or so they say).
Final North American dates are this May and June. No Vegas dates, but I might go to San Diego or Sacramento.

Re: The Live Music thread...
No Denver? wtf
Re: The Live Music thread...
I feel like there's maybe some dates left to be announced. No Phoenix, no Las Vegas (which they often play). Thinking they might swing through at the end of the June run and hit Denver, PHX, maybe LV, maybe SLC?
I dunno. If not I probably won't miss a chance to see it even if you can never believe if a band is ever really going to tour again. Given all the shit they dealt with over replacing Hanneman after he died I think it's probably legit.

My daughter and some friends are going to Forecastle this year in Louisville. Pretty great top of the lineup. Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell, War on Drugs, Arcade Fire. And some others I like: Houndmouth, Kurt vile, Margo Price.
I'll probably see what days end up looking the best and might try to go up. She got the full pass.

I've never been to a "festival" like this, but this one intrigued me. I really like that Forecastle lineup this year and was giving some thought to going to Louisville for it. If there were some other folks going might give it serious consideration.

Apropos of nothing, I listened to a Sufjan Stevens live album on Spotify today and am going to move heaven and earth to see him play a show this year. Though he really doesn't tour much...

Re: The Live Music thread...
I don't know about the scene in LV, but it was fucking impossible to see him here last year. He played Red Rocks, which is a bit of a draw in itself, but 8000ish sold old basically instantly.
Did you see that ludicrous display last night?
Re: The Live Music thread...
Well, he would never (likely) play Vegas and I'm not even sure he's going to play any shows this year, but I'm not averse to going anywhere west of the Rockies if necessary.

Saw him 3 years ago at the Murat. Fell asleep.

Re: The Live Music thread...
I'm not paying that to see him at a TERRIBLE venue...the WaMu theater, which is half of a convention center walled off with heavy curtains. All the ambience and acoustics of an airplane hanger.
You know a place is bad when its still named after a bank that went belly up 9 years ago.
Re: The Live Music thread...
Great night last night in Indy, at the Murat. James McMurtry opened for Jason Isbell.
We met BSF before, at The Eagle, and had drinks and dinner. Shoutout to BSF for buying a round of drinks, and dinner. A good fellow he is.

It's the sixth version of The Swamp. What could possibly go wrong?

Because I am a sucker for nostalgia and harbor a bizarre soft spot for Billy Corgan I just bought tickets to see Smashing Pumpkins on their upcoming tour.

Ha. Yeah, it never occurred to me to try that tack. I'm saving all of my powder for one big ask one day. Not sure what that'll be since I really don't care much about pro wrestling. I've taken him to two Knights games so far so I'm building up goodwill.

Re: The Live Music thread...
Saw Margo Price last night. Great show. Super talented (she even played drums on a couple of songs), great voice, great songs. And wow...her band is fantastic.
One of the songs in the encore was a very Ike&Tina Turner-esque cover of 'Proud Mary', with the guys from the opening band, and Price wearing a spankly Tina Turner dress. Very fun.

Listening to KEXP on a regular basis has certainly exposed me to a wide variety of music, and I just love seeing bands that up and coming. I'm also lucky that my girlfriend is a big fan of seeing live music as well.sancarlos wrote: ↑Mon Feb 26, 2018 12:21 pmDave, you are quite eclectic in your tastes and don't stick to one genre. For once, I'd like to see Isbell with Amanda in the band. Seen him twice, neither time was she there. He and the 400 Unit were great tonight, but there's something missing without her.

She was not there when I saw him. Same thought. Going to see both bands next Wednesday when they play in Cleveland. I've never heard a BtS song, but I love the Whigs.EnochRoot wrote: ↑Tue Jan 16, 2018 5:33 pm Just got word that Built to Spill is playing a split bill with the Afghan Whigs down the road from my house in a few months.
Odd pairing. I consider BtS generally to be an indie / lo-fi act. The Whigs? More loud, brash, yet produced. Dunno. Should be a fun night regardless.
