What a rough way to start out today. Read his books, watched his shows. That's a real bummer man.

Have a recommendation beyond Kitchen Confidential? (which I'm pretty sure I read during travel time on my way to H2C about 10 years ago so I can definitely reread it at this point)

I didn't keep up with the show after he moved to CNN.

Medium Raw was an excellent sort of 10 year reunion on where he found himself after KC.

I watched every episode of No Reservations, but also found it tough to follow on CNN. Felt like it lost a bit of the edge and filmmaker's spark that NR had.

Just sad is all. Suicide is a motherfucker and so preventable.

God damn, Ripert was the one who found him. Somehow that adds to the whole “he seemed a lot more real than other famous personalities” aspect.

On Wednesday I took part in a Mental Health First Aid class. When the subject got to suicides, and you're with people from a squadron that have had suicides in the last few months, things got...heated.

There are signs to watch for, but sometimes you just don't know unless you are perceptive enough, and actually bold enough, to directly ask: "Do you want to commit suicide?"

This article just came out: Suicide rates are up 30 percent since 1999, CDC says

I was really worried about his switch to CNN at the time, but I've really enjoyed Parts Unknown. Shit, I even liked the half season or so of The Layover that he did.

Was that his first one with CNN? Did it overlap with either NR or PU?

After NR before/during PU. And I believe that one originated on Travel Channel.

He seemed like a genuinely cool dude. I mean that in the Steve McQueen/Paul Newman kind of sense. It's an exceptionally rare trait.

This is how I eulogized him on my Facepage:
His wanderlust took him around the world, and he saw more of the human condition than most of us could in a hundred lifetimes. He was also wise enough to whittle down all of life’s complexities to the meals we eat.

“Context and memory play powerful roles in all the truly great meals in one's life.”

Rest in peace, Anthony Bourdain
I think at the of the day, he gave an unpretentious passion to aspiring chefs by linking food to humanity.

I doubt Bourdain ever made the McDonald's that Trump had someone else pick up for him (so it wouldn't be messed with).

ha! good point.

I'd be curious if they ever met like 10 years ago under different circumstances then President Trump.

Really sad to read all the tributes this morning. It just shows how hidden depression is. It's been mention on the Swamp many times. Fight depression is trying to cure the brain using the same damaged brain.

I can't imagine them meeting and it going well. Even pre-president Trump was the epitome of what Bourdain couldn't and wouldn't tolerate.

I'm reading a 2017 New Yorker article that is pretty much all about how happy he was just being Anthony Bourdain... Getting to travel the world, eating (mostly) amazing food, meeting new people, experiencing new cultures.

It's a mind fuck article to read today.

Selfishly, I think I'll hold off reading anymore for now...

My brother is a fairly sensible guy...

He just told me that some people believe that Bourdain was killed by "the Russians" because he interviewed an opposition politician.

He listed a few pieces of (ridiculous) "evidence" before I shut him down.

I wasn't a Bourdain fan when he was alive. I had seen a few minutes of his shows here and there, but didn't go any deeper than that. And I was surprised at the breadth and depth of dismay when he died. I hadn't realized that he meant that much to so many people.

So I've been going back and reading his books and watching his shows, and yeah, I get it now.

I'm not a foodie. Even worse, I'm a vegetarian. So almost all of his food writing is irrelevant to me because I'm never going to eat that stuff. And, of course, he would have hated me for refusing to eat it. I don't agree with a lot of stuff that he wrote, but I'm not offended by it -- even the ortolan-eating scene in 'Medium Raw.' (I pictured Jonathan Franzen rage-weeping while he read that.)

Such a wonderful, unique, important voice. I don't know if it's fair for me to say that I miss him, but I do.

Oh, jeez, the 'Rome' episode of 'Parts Unknown,' featuring Asia Argento, just auto-played. I need to pay attention to this.
