Saw Gravity last night....wow....it was fucking intense as shit. And just an amazing piece of directing.

Totally worth it to spring for the 3D-Imax version as well.

I just saw it this afternoon (3D only, though). Can't agree enough. I caught myself smiling during what was actually a pretty horrific scene because it was just so cool looking.

There were a few scenes where I found myself totally tensed up, trying to use my own body english to influence what was happening on the screen.

An astrophysicist's (not NDT) review of the science of the movie.

Conclusion:

People often get confused about the purpose of these articles. There is no one-to-one correlation between getting every nitpicky detail right and a movie being good. What I want is for filmmakers to know the details about the world they’re exploring, and then chose to take some artistic license where they have to for the purpose of making a better film. GRAVITY excels at this. The technology is all based thoroughly on the real world of the space program. Many of the things that happen to the characters are based on real-world events, or in the case of the Kessler Syndrome, real-world concerns. The result is a staggering level of immersion that it feels like an IMAX documentary as much as it does an IMAX feature film. Sure they sped some things up, ignored some safety protocols, cheated a bit on the physics, and screwed around with some orbital mechanics. But they deliberately did it to improve the film, and gave us a little wink at the same time, without going into long pedantic scenes about it. The result is something tight, lean, and dramatic: cinema stripped down to its core, and reinvented.

So saw this article about a kickstarter project for a movie on bitcoin and silk road by Alex Winter. You may not recoginze the name Alex Winter but you will recognize

I saw Thor this weekend - it was pretty good, but nothing great. It did make good use of the 3D, especially the parts in Asgard.

I took my youngest to "Frozen" as my older kid went to see Hunger Games with The Girlfriend and The Girlfriend's daughter. Frozen was ok. Pretty cool animation, but the faces looked really weird. Great scenes when she's freezing everything though. My 9 year old loved it.

Helms is a good comedic actor (see Cedar Rapids if you haven't), but Naked Gun should never, ever be remade.

And Nordberg = Ray Lewis.

Michael Strahan is a comedic actor of sorts these days, isn't he? Maybe they'll just omit the role. Or radically change it. My first thought was that "no actor would touch that" and then I corrected myself quickly upon remembering that actors simply have no shame whatsoever.

Honestly, I'd rather see a return of Police Squad, eh?

That Police Squad was cancelled after a mere six episodes is the saddest possible commentary on humanity. And wasn't the the original Nordberg character, back on the TV show, a White guy?

I'm scared of heights too but i think being in space would bring on a lot more fears than heights. Like not being able to breath and Claustrophobia. I wouldn't worry about falling to death or get vertigo up there, I'd just freak out that I couldn't run home to my couch when I wanted to. And plus you're being watched the whole time, don't like that either. Yeah, maybe I won't watch it either...

anyone see any movies over Christmas? Was there even a happy one?

I saw American Hustle and thought it was a fun heist movie with good acting.

It was a really strange set of movies coming out this year.

Afghanistan War, alcoholism, corruption, financial crime, violence against the elderly, dysfunctional families, masterless samurais and extra-marital affairs.

Sounds pleasant doesn't it!

I watched Parkland on Netflix. Intertwined stories of people on the scene at the hospital in Dallas on 11/22/63. Well done, went too far over the top in a couple of scenes, and on occasion diverged from historical facts unnecessarily. Had they let the drama and emotion of the real events speak for themselves rather than needless embellishment to evoke emotion. But well acted by Paul Giamatti (Abraham Zapruder), BillyBob (Secret Service agent Forrest Sorrels) and the rest of the cast.

Saw Hobbit 2 yesterday. Wasn't blown away by it, but it's not bad. Some of the dialogue seemed very stilted and cliched, especially in the first half.

The depiction of Smaug is fantastic, however. And the barrel escape was a lot of fun to watch.

Watched Departures by Yojiro Takita a couple of days ago. Brilliant film. Highly recommend it.

Have a look at the awards it won (including 10 of the 11 Japanese Oscars for which it was nominated).

Your local library likely has a copy. Have a look. It also won "Best Foreign Film" at the 2009 Academy Awards. Y'know, the only category worth actually watching.

A more recent Japanese film that you might like is Like Father Like Son

Also won many awards including the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

I humbly disagree. I thought it was hilarious, but I had a pretty rad buzz going and had finished part 1 two minutes before leaving the house to see this one. That said, I thought the first one was pretty bad after the initial viewing and now it's my favorite dumb comedy in a long time.

I thought American Hustle was the best movie I've seen this year. Jennifer Lawrence was amazing as usual.

I finally saw it yesterday, (after rewatching aUJ first for the first time on Friday night). I definitely liked DoS more than the first. It moved along better, and I thought the effects were a little more refined overall (though I had to see it in 3D, so maybe that helped?). I didn't have too much of an issue with the Elves in Lake-Town. It's probably a lesser liberty to take with the book than the Elves at Helms Deep. My biggest issue with the forced love triangle was that it just pointed out how silly it is that three of the dwarfs don't look like dwarfs. For whatever reason Jackson and co. thought they couldn't get away with Thorin being buried under make-up and prosthetics, and audiences wouldn't buy Kate from Lost falling for a typical Dwarf.

If Netflix is pimping Only God Forgives to you, skip it. Major letdown after Drive.

If you ever get a chance to watch the Pusher series (by the same director - Nicolas Winding Refn), I highly recommend them. Fantastic gangster flicks.

(There's a British remake popping up on Netflix now, but skip that and watch the original Danish one.)
