I saw a tweet saying this is the police department team that loses the charity basketball game to the fire department, 67-14.

From HuffPo
It turned out the men were security experts from the National Border Patrol Council and were there to tout the US-Mexico border wall Trump is currently having so much difficulty getting funding for.

None of these will pass the GOPers in the Senate or WH of course, but this is a great start. For 1.75 years, need to be hammering home the point that Republicans don't want to implement insanely popular bi-partisan supported democratic reforms.

Re: Trump Admin Meltdown Thread Part III - A Democratic House
Thor Hogan of Washington Post argues that Dems shouldn't go for impeachment, but rather they should censure Trump.
On Thursday, freshman Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) infuriated many of her colleagues by telling a room of liberal activists that the Democratic House of Representatives would “impeach the motherf---er.”
To some on the left, Tlaib’s comments seemed not just sensible but long overdue. After all, President Trump has committed impeachable offenses. At a minimum, he has interfered with the ongoing inquiry into Russian election meddling. He has publicly admitted as much, and his numerous tweets on the subject reveal a pattern of obstructing justice. There is also increasing evidence that he colluded with various parties to defraud the American people to win the presidency. We will know more about his offenses when special counsel Robert S. Mueller III concludes his investigation and the House begins its examination of the president’s conduct.
Yet Tlaib’s comments disregard the political reality: Gaining a conviction in the Republican Senate is highly unlikely, and thus far, impeachment remains politically unpopular. This makes it worthwhile for House Democrats to consider an alternative path. Rather than allowing her party to get mired in an impeachment battle that will distract from its progressive message, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) could orchestrate a presidential censure. And not just one. House Democrats could adopt a series of censure resolutions, one for each investigation revealing serious misconduct.
Censure is a formal reprimand adopted by one or both chambers of Congress. Unlike impeachment, presidential censure is not constitutionally sanctioned. Thus, it does not result in removal from office. Yet it has proved to be an effective form of public shaming, especially when implemented in a nonpartisan way. Such a punishment seems well suited for this president and this moment in our national history.
There is precedent for this strategy. Members of Congress have introduced censure resolutions against at least 12 presidents. The most successful effort was the censure of Andrew Jackson in 1834, when the Senate condemned him for removing federal deposits from the Second Bank of the United States...

I mean, sure?
But if Mueller's investigation has gone international, like I think it has, and the paper trail envelops prominent Republicans, then, I feel like, impeachment will be but the cherry on top of the shit sundae when all is said and done.

Re: Trump Admin Meltdown Thread Part III - A Democratic House
No it wouldn't. He is incapable of believing anything he does is wrong, and he can't be shamed. He would chalk it up to the mean Dems being political, and he would make insulting nicknames for more Dems, but that's about it. He doesn't know what a censure is, and when he finds out it is meaningless, he won't give a fuck, and he'd weaponize it for his base.

You guys are missing the point. He’d be so infatuated with it he’d tweet like nuts. It’d be perfect. Censure everything and he’s gonna respond to it all.

I really thought SC put that link as a joke to show how much too many of the left just don’t get it. And they wonder why they lose elections.
Fuck censure. The GOP plays this as war. It’s time to fight fire with fire.

Just out of curiosity....this whole 'Declare a National Emergency and do whatever the fuck I want' isn't a real thing, right? Like, it's not in the constitution, is it?
Re: Trump Admin Meltdown Thread Part III - A Democratic House
I certainly wasn’t endorsing it by posting that! It was quite a different proposal that guy had, so I thought I’d bring it to the Swamp’s attention.

You know what's cool?
Trump relentlessly calling the media the enemy of the people and literally every media station giving him airtime for his stupid immigration announcement.
Oh wait. That's not cool at all. That's the media being complicit.

Re: Trump Admin Meltdown Thread Part III - A Democratic House
Is he timing this with a story coming out today? Two theories I saw was, one, the Manafort appeal deadline is passing and something might come from that, and, two, the NY courts might be coming up with something soon (which was the cause of Trump's out of the blue "that black president did it too" tweet this weekend).
Would love to see a news scroll about indictments during his address. Or how about a real-time fact checker on the news scroll?

Re: Trump Admin Meltdown Thread Part III - A Democratic House
Everyone with a brain is basically demanding a real time fact check during his announcement.
Whether it's something like a live Tweet thing, 10 minute delay with facts scrolling, or a Pop Up Video response, people are pissed that he's being given the greenlight to gaslight without repercussion.

Re: Trump Admin Meltdown Thread Part III - A Democratic House
A 10 minute delay they're aware of wouldn't matter; they'd toss in a few early surprises that eat up all research time and energy and he'd get away with the rest of it upstream. Ignoring and a detailed later fact-check is the only option.

Unlike supreme Court justices and ivy league academics who think they know better, the beauty of the Constitution is that you need only read it. Not that long. As a cheat, he can indiscriminately seize Mexicans at the border but can't rob the fed to buy a wall.DaveInSeattle wrote: ↑Mon Jan 07, 2019 12:21 am Just out of curiosity....this whole 'Declare a National Emergency and do whatever the fuck I want' isn't a real thing, right? Explain what you mean by money. If they show the speech, especially uninterrupted, they lose the ad revenue that they would've made had they aired regular programming.

Re: Trump Admin Meltdown Thread Part III - A Democratic House
Not gonna speak for Johnnie, but the media is definitely obsessed by Trump and whether they want to admit it or not they carry water for him by presenting inflammatory tweets as if they're breaking news and not the ravings of a madman while he's shitting on the john.L-Jam3 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 08, 2019 2:30 pmExplain what you mean by money. Any money they lose tonight in ad revenue during the hour blocked off for the address will be made up 100x in ad revenue from their idiotic talking head shows where we get "both sides-ism" on climate change and racism.

I get that Trump is off the charts a shitty person and president.
But when the president says he wants to address the nation, there's absolutely zero chance the networks can turn him down.
But I wholeheartedly agree with brian that the networks are not helping by covering Trump like there's literally nothing else going on in the world.

The networks turned down an Obama request in 2014 to address the nation on immigration. (Though I suppose I have to grant the newsworthiness is enhanced during a government shutdown.)Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Tue Jan 08, 2019 2:51 pm I get that Trump is off the charts a shitty person and president.

Re: Trump Admin Meltdown Thread Part III - A Democratic House
All three major networks can if they wanted to show their standard programming on the flagships, and then shunt the gaslighting off to another property (NBC -> MSNBC, ABC -> ESPN8, CBS -> TBS or one of those channels) and just run a ticker saying to tune in there if they want. Anyone who is still only on over-the-air signals lives out in the sticks and support Trump anyway, it's not like they're going to lose them.
