The crazy thing about that one is that Theta Tau isn't even a "fraternity" in the common usage of the word.

Yeah, but they brought the total number of fraternities and sororities under probation or suspension on campus to six.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Tue May 08, 2018 11:28 am The crazy thing about that one is that Theta Tau isn't even a "fraternity" in the common usage of the word.

I'm not defending it a single bit, but I remember we did some really dumb shit in college too. (I'm taking them at their word that it was intended to be an ill-conceived and ill-executed "parody" because heaven help this country if it wasn't.)
Fraternity charter should be revoked and the students expelled, but hopefully they learn from it and get a second chance at some other school.

Re: Racism
Yeah, I watched that video when the story came out and in the skit, the kids making those racist statements were pretending to be pledges of the fraternity "kappa kappa kappa." So, yeah. Now, I don't know the context of WHY they were doing the skit, but it sure seemed like they were actually mocking the racist views, or at least saying them for comedic effect. And I think there was at least one black kid involved.brian wrote: ↑Tue May 08, 2018 11:37 am I'm not defending it a single bit, but I remember we did some really dumb shit in college too. So yeah, it's still really dumb, but not quite as bad as it was portrayed. (And not nearly as bad as that SAE video from Oklahoma(?) a couple of years ago where they were gleefully singing about how they'd never allow any n-words.)
Totally Kafkaesque

What the hell is it about hockey that brings that out? I've never seen anything like the behavior listed in that story in any other sport.
The closest example I can think of is my one exposure to junior hockey about 25 years ago. My roommate and I took his 12-year-old (or maybe a bit younger) nephew to a hockey tournament in Atlanta. I'll never forget the things the parents in the stands were yelling at the kids and the refs. It shook me. I had to leave the stands.

As far as the parents go, I've seen and heard of parents behaving like super assholes at baseball, football, soccer, basketball, hockey, lacrosse, etc...Shirley wrote: ↑Thu Jan 10, 2019 7:23 pm What the hell is it about hockey that brings that out? As far as the kids go, I think in hockey it might have to do with the fact that physical intimidation is a real part of the game. Unfortunately, that element gets extended to verbal intimidation, which can manifest itself in ways like this.
ETA: Also, many people in hockey, much like baseball, believe in an unspoken unwritten "code of conduct" whereby players behave conservatively and do not call attention to themselves. When a player shows some outward emotion and personality, the curmudgeon segment sometimes reacts badly. This often is directed at minority players - blacks in hockey, latins in baseball.

Its hockey culture.
I watched a lot of college football over the holidays and some of the hits were really hard. Targeting and ejections. But fights dont break out.
In hockey even a hard clean hit now results in a fight.

Well, degen, please don't confuse the issue with incorrect data. So far this season, the NHL games have seen an average of 0.19 fights per game. This continues a long-term downward trend in the number of hockey fights. There were three times as many just nine years ago.degenerasian wrote: ↑Thu Jan 10, 2019 8:11 pm In hockey even a hard clean hit now results in a fight.

Thing is, even in Canada, there are few black players. I'm sure PK Subban has a million stories.

But if not a fight then at least a scrum where 2 guys go for roughing.
Its lessening but still not enough. Fighting should be gone.

Re: Racism
I basically stopped watching my niece's softball games because of how the parents would act towards players, coaches and each other. I was honestly hesitant to put my daughter into any kind of sports unless she specifically asked because I know how I am, and if shit like that is directed towards my daughter or me, I doubt I'll be able to keep my mouth shut.Shirley wrote: ↑Thu Jan 10, 2019 7:23 pm What the hell is it about hockey that brings that out? Winter break my senior year of HS or early college I was leaving the house to meet up with friends and my mom said "watch out for black guys" and I stopped and looked at her weird and she looked back weird and then I realized she said "watch out for black ice" and we shared a nice laugh.
Re: Racism
As easy-road as this seems, since I've become closer to the game in the last couple years, so much of it is economic status around the sport. It's an excruciatingly expensive sport, especially for younger kids that are outgrowing gear. This tends to limit the socio-economic status of the players the game can attract and at least in the Midwest means richer, whiter, less inclusive communities. I won't say this encourages racism outright but it certainly whitewashes the leagues and people associated with them, thus bringing some of the ugly undertones to the surface.Shirley wrote: ↑Thu Jan 10, 2019 7:23 pm What the hell is it about hockey that brings that out? I've now been a part of men's leagues where we've had 6 permutations of between 8-14 teams, 15 guys/girls each. There is one black dude that plays with us. Again, small sample size, but that's my experience around here.

Re: Racism
What Pruitt said regarding hockey. I don't have numbers, but when you can count the number of black players active in the nhl on your fingers, it's indicative of what's going on at all levels. Hockey is also notoriously homophobic AND there's a creepy sub-culture of abuse wrt the youth level, particularly with youth that live outside of the home to play on elite travel teams.
What's kind of fucked up about the movie Youngblood is that the cougar that goes after Lowe's character is somewhat accurate, except swap out a minor league player for a younger kid and swap out the cougar for a dude. I think a few high profile scandals has probably helped shift things a bit, but if you dig around you'll find some very fucked up stories over the years.
Now, back to racism, I don't know what drives the numbers down, but I suspect it's a bit like soccer in America. To hang with the elite, you've got to fork over a lot of dough.
I played youth hockey in MI and apart from the league dues, just the equipment was crazy expensive. And, remember, at that age, you have to buy new shit almost every year. I had to quit because it was just killing my single, trying to pay for college mom at the time. Kind of ironic, but being a goalie for a travel team in soccer was a fraction of the cost, so I stuck with that.
ETA - Acknowledging BSF's comments.

Re: Racism
Interesting site (https://colorofhockey.com/)..it really does demonstrate the limited number of minority puck players. I knew DSP and Subban, but I remember the general surprise I had when I noticed Bowey. Just figured he was another Canadian NHLer (which he is). The Jones boys were not surprising but that was because they had lots of coverage via their dad and solid stints in the US Youth setup.
Godfrey had a 2 episode run arc in the 1 season of Benders. Sounds about right.BSF wrote:I've now been a part of men's leagues where we've had 6 permutations of between 8-14 teams, 15 guys/girls each. There is one black dude that plays with us. Re: Racism
NHL should really embrace PK Subban. Get him in advertising and promos everywhere.
I think the NHL missed an opportunity to promote Jarome Iginla. He was basically unknown in the American market. It would have been a great opportunity to promote a guy with a Nigerian father who was captain of his team, won the scoring title, made the Stanley Cup final, won two Olympic gold medals and is a slam dunk Hall of Famer.
It was announced yesterday that his jersey will be retired in Calgary on March 2.
