The scary part is that once they've done it to one leg, there is a significant chance they'll also do it to the other leg. She was 9 when she hurt her leg. Now, she'll be 11 in August. I really really hope she doesn't hurt the other leg, because at some point, we wouldn't do the surgery.tennbengal wrote: ↑Wed May 01, 2019 11:56 am That’s insane. Not that you would pay it, but the cost.
She's doing great now, but we take care not to let her sprint. So, no more trips to the ocean, where she loved to run herself ragged.

Re: Man's Best Friend
Our vet does ACL surgeries and they quoted us $1500-2K today and said if we went to a "specialist" that it would be between $3500-$4000. I like our vet and I'd rather her get the money than someone else I don't know and the fact that it's considerably cheaper is even better.
I'm fully expecting it to be closer to the $2K number (which I had in my head going into this appointment this morning) so I'm mentally prepared for that. I would not have been mentally prepared for $8-9K.

I should note that there is a completely different procedure recommended nowadays for bigger/heavier dogs. It costs a lot more than the traditional route, but with a much lower likelihood of recurrence. So we went that route. I’m guessing you were able to go the other route.Steve of phpBB wrote: ↑Wed May 01, 2019 3:39 pmWait ... $8-9K for one ACL repair surgery?sancarlos wrote: ↑Wed May 01, 2019 11:38 amI think I discussed this upthread, but my doggo blew out her ACL and tore her meniscus right at the end of December, 2017, with surgery in early January, 2018. Also, the price might be a function somewhat to where you live.

I don't really know what procedure they used. FWIW, my dog was 80 pounds at the time of surgery (they made us cut back on his food so he'd lose weight. Amazing how effective that is).sancarlos wrote: ↑Wed May 01, 2019 4:18 pmI should note that there is a completely different procedure recommended nowadays for bigger/heavier dogs. surgery is scheduled! but not until June 13 as the doc is on maternity leave so it's her first day back. so Pen is on pain pills until then and we're having to figure out how to build a ramp at both my house and my parents' house so she doesn't have to navigate steps to go outside.Brontoburglar wrote: ↑Wed May 01, 2019 2:58 pm Our vet does ACL surgeries and they quoted us $1500-2K today and said if we went to a "specialist" that it would be between $3500-$4000. nuts to not want the dog to re-tear her ACL and do the whole thing over again? (she can't use stairs for four weeks post-op)

I didn’t mean to be an asshole. I just grew up where dogs and cats just disappeared. They sure as shit didn’t have acl injuries. I have a cat and a lizard I love but never have had to spend more than 150 bucks on the cat and the lizards housing has been more than the lizard himself. I get that dogs become family so I’m sorry for pissing off you guys. It’s your money and you can do what you want. My bad.

Re: Man's Best Friend
I had a lab that tore one ACL before the age of one and then tore her other one the following year. The vet said the surgeries where a minimum of $1,500 per knee and about a 50% chance they would hold. I said she will limp. We kept her on supplements and kept her off steps as much as we could. She made it to 14 years and 11 months and would play fetch till she dropped from exhaustion.

Re: Man's Best Friend
Got a text this morning, neighbor had to put down the best dog that ever lived. My daughter is going to be devastated. For years, she has been periodically on the verge of tears saying she doesn't want Milo to die. He was 16, and had a couple health scares over the past 2 years, so this isn't at all a surprise, but this one hit me harder than I expected.
The Sybian wrote: ↑Wed Feb 14, 2018 10:53 am I found some old pictures of why I love our neighbors dog. My daughter always loved dogs, but was a bit afraid of them. She would ask to pet dogs, then usually back away and chicken out when owners let her. Milo fixed that problem. We spent a couple nights at our neighbors house during the infamous October snowstorm when we lost power for 10 days, and they had a generator. My daughter was 3, I think. A couple days into our stay, I went downstairs and saw my daughter taking a nap, laying on top of Milo, who was curled up, with his head on her cheek. Wish I had a picture of that. But this was from 5 years ago, when I pet sat for them. She was so proud to hold Milo's leash when we took him for a walk.

If it helps, my sister recently signed a lease at a new place in Santa Cruz and the landlord wanted to assurances their dog was friendly. So my sister showed him a video of my three-year-old walking him last summer and showed how patient he was with her, and he was sold.

Re: Man's Best Friend
I'm always afraid to open this thread, but the possibility of puppy pics keeps me coming back. My neighbor just called me to apologize, as she had a "last day" planned, and wanted me and my daughter there, but the situation didn't allow for it. I'll spare most of the details, as their 10 year old daughter walked into a really bad scene. They aren't sure what happened, but the vet thinks Milo had a seizure, and their extremely submissive 3yo German Shepherd mix freaked out, trying to pull him to safety or wake him up. The submissive pup is still shaken up and buries her head at the mention of Milo's name. She just posted a bunch of pics on FB that are choking me up. Mostly Milo with their daughter through the years, Milo with a huge smile as she has him dressed in costumes, giving him a medical exam, painting his toe nails... When the daughter was 2 or 3, she called Miloto the kitchen, and he new exactly what she wanted. He laid down in front of the kitchen counter, she stood on him so she could reach the cookie jar, while he smiled at her with a look of pride. They clearly had this routine down, and he happily helped.

This is why, even though we still feel guilty Harper was at a border and not at home, I wouldn't change it. Based on the timing, everything would have happened in front of our then 3.5 year old in the living room and I can't imagine the effect that could have had.The Sybian wrote: ↑Thu May 23, 2019 10:48 amI'll spare most of the details, as their 10 year old daughter walked into a really bad scene.

Not a puppy, but we just adopted an 11-year-old pit/lab mix. He's a big, good boy.
The shelter called him Houston and I think we'll stick with that since he answers to it and it's a good name for a dog.

Literally just got him home, so this is one of the only ones we've taken so far.
Honestly, he's probably a little bigger than I would want, but he had been in the shelter for about a year and just hate to see good dogs sit in there until they die, so we'll give him a good home for as long as he has left. He really is a super friendly dog.
