I could not find an existing puppy thread via search, my apologies to the DTP if one already exists.

My bulldog, Deebo, damn near suffered a heat stroke on Sunday when it was 100 F. He was having trouble breathing (more than usual -- he sounded very congested), and was just laying there laboring through each breath looking at us with a scared look on his face. We didnt know what was wrong with him so we took him inside into the A/C (we were outside BBQing), put a fan in his face and gave him some mucinex for the congestion. None of that worked. We gave him ice water and he just threw it up.

It wasnt until we soaked him with cold water and squeezed lemon juice down his throat that he went back to normal. I thought he was going to die, each breath sounded like it might be his last. We always keep him outside when we are not home, so I am going to have to find a way to keep him cool during the hot summer. I'll probably buy him a kiddie pool and load it with ice to see if that works before I look into other more expensive options.

Yeah I was trippin. I had heard that bulldogs overheat easily, but it had never happened to Deebs in the year and a half that we've had him.

When bulldogs overheat their throats become swollen, to the point where they can't breathe (let alone swallow). Since they can't swallow, all the water they drink gets stuck in their throat and becomes thick and foamy, making it even harder to breathe. The cold water soaking decreased the swelling in his throat, and the lemon juice helped break up the thick foam collecting in his throat.

Bulldogs are big clumsy delicate creatures.

Glad it worked out, Keg. Definitely go with the kiddie pool idea. We have one in our back yard for the dog. She loves to just lie there in the water. (cue joke).

Damn, that sounds terrifying. It brings back awful memories of my old dog dying a couple of years ago.

At $16.97, I am definitely getting a misting kit for Deebo's area in the backyard (I figured this would be a lot more expensive). I might even set this up on our patio for when we have guests over.

Glad that Deebo's alright.

My West Highland Terrier came down with leptospirosis (brutal illness contracted from raccoon urine) and there was a week there where I was sure that she was not going to make it. The poor girl couldn't even walk for a couple of days.

There's a vaccine available and anyone with a dog in an area with many raccoons (as the entire city of Toronto is) should get their dog a shot.

I am going to go look at bulldog puppies this weekend or next. Hopefully I find somethig I like...I feel Deebs needs a buddy to keep him company while we are gone all day. I'll post pics if I end up briging one home (or you can follow me on IG (@og_trenesito) where I post a ton of pics of my pup).

Instead of buying a new puppy I am going to try and breed Deebo. I've had two people call me up looking to set something up. My boy got bitches on deck.

In other news, Deebs got a hold of some rat poison on Sunday. We had it in a baggy in a box in our patio (I am remodeling the garage so all of our stuff is outside). Luckily he is very patient and methodical so he didnt rip into the bag and devour the stuff. He just played with the baggy in his mouth and poked a couple of holes through the bag. Some of the poison crumbs got out of the bag and he ate a very little amount. When I got home and saw what he did I gave him peroxide to induce vomiting, then I took him to the vet where they fed him charcoal (to prevent his stomach from absorbing the poison) and they gave him a vitamin k shot and vitamin k pills for him to take for the next 4 weeks. He is doing well and acting normal (other than the extremely dark poop from the charcoal).

Well, it would be the color of bricks. Rat poison makes you bleed. We gussie it up and call it Coumadin when we give it to peoples. In smaller doses. Usually.

I was supposed to take Deebs yesterday to artificially inseminate a female, but the guy I was dealing with texted me that his Chihuahua 'got stuck' to his bitch and had to cancel our appointment. So instead of a litter of expensive puppies, this dude is going to end up with bulldog-chihuahua puppies that will probably end up at the pound.

I watched it 3 times in a row, and may watch it again. I had a Siberian Husky when I was 3, and while I don't remember her, I have always had a special fondness for the breed. I do have a great pic of me in my PJs laying on top of the dog, who is curled up on the floor.

I took this pic in downtown Vancouver a couple of days ago. While the "Dog Taxi" is cool enough in its own right, I thought the fact that it was parked right up next to a tree was just too perfect.

I dropped off Deebo at the vet today so that they can take his semen sample and artificially inseminate my neighbor's bulldog (Pebbles). Should have puppies in about nine weeks.

Bulldog's will try to bone on their own, but they are rarely successful due to the way their weight is distributed -they aren't able to mount without injuring the bitch. They also overheat while boning, and I've also heard that they can have heart attacks. I've seen videos of studmasters successfully naturally mating bulldogs, but I don't know any who are local, and I don't think it's worth the risk (especially since Deebo has overheated a couple of times this year).

Also, the owner of the female pays for all of the vet fees, I'm just on the hook to provide the semen sample. He opted for surgical insemination to improve his chances of a pregnancy and a larger litter.
