Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
The Democratic frontrunner is using the word “malarkey”? In the year 2019?
Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
ETA: to tie in Johnnie’s post from the bottom of the last page, this is why Buttigieg has moved sharply to the right over the last few months (and is now parroting GOP talking points against universal benefits). He knows that the donor class will need a fallback if Biden falls apart after his expected losses in Iowa and NH. And Bloomberg isn’t it.

I wouldn't think that enough of them vote to make this slogan a good idea. It really does feel like Biden is the Trojan horse for mayor Pete.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
Maybe but I truly don’t give a fuck. The left is going to eat itself again and we are going to be lamenting a second trump term this time next year. But at least the old white dude who used the word malarkey won’t be president.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
A lot of old people do vote. And that’s a big part of Biden’s continued lead in national primary polls. But not a lot of old people volunteer on campaigns, organize rallies, or drive people to the polls. Yet Biden routinely bashes the younger generations of voters that Dems need to rely on for those types of tasks. I’m confident that young people will vote for whoever the Dem nominee is. But if all you’re doing is getting their votes, and not their time or enthusiasm, it may not be enough.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
The Biden campaign feels that the youth and minority vote is locked in. Which is a mistake.
Hes trying to swing the old people vote only. But as mentioned above, youth need to be enthusiastic to campaign and volunteer.
The Republicans have an entire voting mechanism in place. The Democrats need to figure this out.

Their “entire voting mechanism” is gerrymandering and the electoral college. That’s it.

Facts. They're reading the benefits of work put in years ago.
It also helps them that the American populace is clustered and scattered instead of spread evenly. They take advantage of land mattering more than people.

Harris out. I predict she endorses Biden to make a play to be his VP pick.

A huge chunk of the electorate (Dem side) is very much in play.
I'll keep saying this: It's way too fucking early to be making broad assumptions about anything. The vast majority of likely primary reporters just aren't paying that much attention. They are waiting for stuff like today to happen (Kamala dropping out), so they can truly focus on this stuff.
Honestly, people that I talk to are like "talk to me when they can all fit on one stage, right now it's too much."
Not saying people aren't paying more attention now than in typical years... A lot are. But it's not the amount of attention needed really get predictive like some are in here.

Yup and gross.
Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
Cynically she could fit with Pete too, I guess, given his "difficulties" convincing black people he cares they exist.
Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
I think her performance in Senate hearings is a great strength so it would be great to see more of that.

What I don't get about that particular calculation is...the African-American community wasn't really rushing to embrace her - especially given her prosecutor background etc. How is adding her to the ticket supposed to shore that up for Buttigieg, for instance? Frankly, Biden is more popular in the African-American community based on polling than Harris was.

I think that's exactly the calculation; Campaign Pete would make a paper move like this ("a straight black woman is my opposite!") that wouldn't have nearly the effect that's desired. They'd probably announce it with that dipshit dance set to whatever the worst possible rap song is.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
Pete would never do this but if he actually gets the nomination he’d be much better off picking Warren than Harris. One of Pete’s biggest weaknesses is that it’s not clear what he actually believes in, other than his own power, and that’s exactly what doomed Harris. She hired a bunch of ex-Clinton staffers and then tried to play the Clinton triangulation game, and as a result she failed to take solid positions on anything. For example, her student loan policy was a prototypical example of a neoliberal half-measure that would end up benefiting barely anyone.mister d wrote: ↑Tue Dec 03, 2019 6:35 pm I think that's exactly the calculation; Campaign Pete would make a paper move like this ("a straight black woman is my opposite!") that wouldn't have nearly the effect that's desired. Because when you needed grants and student loans to get through college, you have the financial wherewithal (and expertise and business acumen) to start any business.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
I’d also imagine that the 3-year failure rate for new businesses in disadvantaged areas is quite high at baseline. But I’m sure Harris paid a bunch of consultants who advised her that it was too politically risky to promise a broad-based program of student loan forgiveness and that if she drew all those lines people would support her approach.DSafetyGuy wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2019 10:19 am

So rich people would buy dirt cheap storefronts in low income neighborhoods, prop up fake businesses for their kids for 3 years and rake in $150K or so?

yup. and if it wasn't fake, the most successful business in low income neighborhoods? money lending branches.
so get that $150K and rake in more on top of it.

Yeah, Booker is that guy right now. Possibly even someone that's not currently running, thought that's extremely rare. Deval Patrick is right up there for this role, but his profile is kind of low.tennbengal wrote: ↑Tue Dec 03, 2019 4:20 pmWhat I don't get about that particular calculation is...the African-American community wasn't really rushing to embrace her - especially given her prosecutor background etc. How is adding her to the ticket supposed to shore that up for Buttigieg, for instance? Way back near the beginning of this thread, I posited that a Warren - Mayor Pete ticket would be kryptonite in terms of optics against Trump - Pence. That was before we got all this data that the black voting population was going to be so cold to both of them. So, swap out one of Elizabeth or Pete as front-runner and put a black VP candidate in there and I think that's truly kryptonite. Perhaps a really solid Hispanic or Latino candidate could get you there.
As always, with the huge caveat that the vast majority of dem voters still haven't truly engaged or bought into any one candidate. There are Bernie and Elizabeth and Pete die hards, but we also have to acknowledge that someone like Booker has a really strong team in Iowa (by all reports) and if he comes in 2nd or a strong 3rd, the optics change. You take NH for what it is, but just like in 2008 when Obama showed strong in Iowa, it convinced SC blacks that he was viable and he showed strong down there...
Booker is the sleeper right now, and a lot of that has to do with his operation in Iowa.
Which is why I keep harping on the fact that other the reality of people reading the signs on the wall and dropping out, we just don't know how this is really going to shake out until we see what happens in Q1 of next year.

Abrams is a great call, but I truly think she's biding her time. I think she would've been a huge factor in these primaries.

I think especially with the benefit of hindsight it was profoundly smart for Abrams to skip this cycle. Doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in women or African-Americans amongst the bulk of Dems.

I'd also say that her organization's role in fighting voter suppression has already paid huge dividends and might be the difference in 2020. If she builds her resume with a possible statewide position after 2020, she's gonna be in pole position for a 2024 (hopefully not) or 2028 run. She's only 45 (!!!) years old.

Imagine if Steyer or Bloomberg gave her money instead of YouTube. Can you imagine a multi million dollar campaign to root out voter suppression?

I know it's internet fun and all but what? The country has declined. There are no adults left. I am ready for a lifetime bureaucrat. Not named Biden preferably.
ETA Impeachment trial. More ok maybe? Nah still childish and just sounds wrong coming out the mouth of a portrayed prosecutor.

(This is good, guys. Let Biden be Biden. There are going to be more and more people that stop relying on the warm fuzzies and getting worried about his "electability." That's what I've been saying about not enough people are truly paying attention nationally. Well, they are fucking paying attention in Iowa... Hows' that going for him?
