Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
I figured this was coming. Even when they had a win streak, the Sharks haven’t looked good this season. They’ve lacked structure and discipline, and his player usage has been weird. I’ve always thought De Boer was a decent coach, but after a while it seems that coaches get tuned out, so maybe this was necessary.

That’s five NHL coaches fired since the last time the Red Wings won a game.

As for DeBoer he can’t be completely blamed for not being able to keep some of the Sharks more useful younger, cheaper players like Donskoi, making Burns younger or making Vlasic or the goaltending competent. But Wilson ain’t going anywhere so someone has to take the fall (and Wilson HAS earned benefit of the doubt but in case it isn’t obvious I don’t think DeBoer is the problem.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
FWIW, Vlasic and Karlsson had rough Octobers, but have been among the Sharks' best players since the first of November. There's a lot to fix here, but Vlasic isn't an issue.

My God, no. No more fodder for the people who think we need more video review of offsides.

Marc-Andre Fleury's last regulation loss to Vancouver was in 2006.

Only saw Hall play in person once in Newark. It was against the Pens. He was scary.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
Totally not psyched about him going to a Pacific Division team and an up and coming one at that. Devils got a pretty nice haul considering deal wasn't predicated on an extension though.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
Looks like Hall's debut with the Coyotes will be in San Jose tomorrow night. I'll be watching on TV for sure.
At that price, the Coyotes must be confident they can sign him.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
3rd round pick turns into a first if Hall is extended and the Yotes win a playoff round. Turns into a 2nd if one is true.
Yotes are very defensive and Hall doesnt back check. Will he defend it will he get free reign?

Maybe they should add in a "wandered and suffered in the wilderness for decades" factor, which might bump a few franchises up the list.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
Yeah, San Jose was rocking hard for years, among the loudest in the league, but, people have grown cynical and spoiled over years and years of doing well but coming up short. Still a fun place for a game but not what it was.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Tue Dec 17, 2019 12:27 pm Maybe they should add in a "wandered and suffered in the wilderness for decades" factor, which might bump a few franchises up the list.
But at least we aren’t the Cardinal fans of the nhl.

Any kind of metrics are impossible to judge and rate when you're talking about something nebulous like "fandom".Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Tue Dec 17, 2019 12:27 pm Maybe they should add in a "wandered and suffered in the wilderness for decades" factor, which might bump a few franchises up the list.
Forbes' metrics are just as dumb as any others and are (perhaps unsurprisingly) more soullessly geared towards engagement (social media, TV ratings) and revenue (sponsorships, ticket sales -both primary and secondary market).
That said, at least it's based on data and not just "well, the only 'real' hockey fans come from Original Six cities obviously..."

Stephenson has been on fire for VGK. Three goals in six games. And the timing couldn't be better after the Glass injury. They went from having too many centers to not having enough really quick. GMGM and McCrimmon pushing all the right buttons again.

So just catching up on some Caps stuff and over the last 6 years the Caps have won 16 of 17 against the Bruins.
Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
Honestly didn't realize it until today, but the Sharks have the third-worst goal differential in the NHL behind New Jersey and Detroit. It's legitimately impressive that they're still within shouting distance of a playoff spot.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
If you start looking around for this year's St. Louis as far as a team that sleepwalks through the first half of the season and then turns it on in the back half, it's probably gonna be the Sharks, but they're still "only" 22-1 to win the Cup and I'd much rather get them at closer to 40-1 or 50-1 if I'm gonna make that kind of a stab in the dark. The Athletic's projections have them as only 6 percent to make the playoffs at this point, so not sure why the sportsbooks refuse to drop their price.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
It may seem like I'm trolling but I'm not. I wish I had bet on Saint Louis around this time last year, so if you're looking for value as far as teams that have a legit chance to win the title at 20-1 or higher, they're still at the top of that list as far as I'm concerned. I wish the sportsbooks weren't giving them as much respect.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
What about the Pens? I think they're one top-line center away from being a real threat in the East.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
Didn't realize they were up there, but yeah 20-1 is not bad value. Honestly Jets and Preds at 25-1 isn't bad either considering the West is probably gonna be a crapshoot come playoff time (which is probably another reason Sharks odds are still pretty good).

Wow, Hall has a defensive influence on the Yotes already. Down 7-5.

I didn't crop that. There's no other teams below there, unless you want to count Seattle.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
For selfish reasons, I love seeing the Canucks out of the playoffs. I can't tell whether I should be happy or sad about the chance that the Sens could get picks 1&2 in what is supposed to be a deep draft. The schadenfreude is great, but Ottawa's in our division.

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
Sharks are still only 14-1 at William Hill to win the Western Conference, ahead of Edmonton, Minnesota, Vancouver, Anaheim (50-1), Chicago (75-1) and LAK (250-1). Chicago seems to have a legit GK in Lerner, so despite what I said earlier in the week, I'd say there's the value if anyone is looking to throw down on a longshot.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Mon Dec 23, 2019 11:27 am For selfish reasons, I love seeing the Canucks out of the playoffs. In the spirit of the season, if you haven't yet make sure to check out Thomas O'Keefe's book about his time as tour manager for Whiskeytown (Waiting To Derail). I read it over the weekend (it's a quick read). Great book.
(And yes for the rest of you I know this isn't the thread for that. That's the point.)

Re: 2019-2020 NHL Season
IR list is pretty packed with centers and defensemen right now, so unfortunately probably a trade (though I appreciate knowing the GM will make a move if need be). Kreider’s name is being floated on Penguins twitter but he’s definitely not cheap enough and maybe not good enough?
Extra disappointing because he was just named to his first all star game and because the “should Guentzel play with 71 or 87” takes were just heating up.
