Re: Random Thoughts About Thoughts Random
That is pretty random. I guess I just assumed that even the Motown folks and others who made Detroit such a big deal were not actually born there. Just like all the Chicago Blues stars came from the south.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.
Re: Random Thoughts About Thoughts Random
Some were for sure. Stevie Wonder isn’t even included in that total (he’s from Saginaw). But almost all of the groups like the Temptations, Four Tops, Supremes etc had at least a couple born Detroiters.Steve of phpBB wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 7:58 pm That is pretty random. As were Berry Gordy and Holland Dozier Holland and that’s just scratching the surface of all the groups inducted. That’s a lot of it frankly. There are a LOT of Motown artists inducted.

Not to mention bob fucking seger
My gall is sufficiently mitigated. Thank you for your concern.
Re: Random Thoughts About Thoughts Random
Yeah and most of the MC5 as well as some other rock acts.ETA: Not sure if Bob Seger was actually born in Detroit or not. Think Iggy Pop really was though.

Fuck yes. (I checked; Wiki says he was born in Detroit. That's good enough for me.)

No wonder he can't wait to leave America!

Re: Random Thoughts About Thoughts Random
Smokey Robinson turns 80 today though, so hopefully that random knowledge evens things out a bit.

Bob Seger grew up in Ann Arbor. I used to walk by his child hood home walking to school every day.
He was born at Henry Ford Hospital and moved to a place on Packard when he was 5.

A Detroiter!
Not too many songwriters or performers put out as many great songs as Smokey!

You could make an argument that he was the true MVP of Motown when you factor in performing, writing, producing and all of the other stuff he did.

A few years ago we went to a Polish restaurant in Denver and the waitresses seemed very very young and very Polish/Eastern European and the clientele aside from us seemed to be very old males that gave off a very creepy vibe.

Also learned that TWO of Berry Gordy’s sons are one-hit wonders. Rockwell (had the 80s song “Somebody’s Watching Me”) and Redfoo of LMFAO.

It was good, though they totally tried to rip us off. My wife had wanted to go and found a groupon for some complete meal deal and we followed what they had listed and then they tried to twist shit around.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2020 2:21 pmHow was the food?

I never thought I'd be 'that guy'...but my neighbors dog really grinds my gears. The thing never shuts up. And I don't even really blame the dog. It's just being a dog, doing dog things. But how can my neighbor stand the constant barking without doing anything about it?
It's not like he doesn't know it's an issue. I've talked to him about it. My wife has talked to him about it. We're in the process of involving Bylaw, which is something else I never thought I'd do. I try to be understanding, but this dog is never not barking when it's outside. Which is nearly all the time.
Gah, I'm getting old!

Yeah, no... Not cool. We have a dog. She's a very well-behaved dog, but there's a decent amount of traffic/deliveries in our little cul-de-sac and she's gonna let those folks know what's up.degenerasian wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2020 2:02 pm I never thought I'd be 'that guy'...but my neighbors dog really grinds my gears. We bring her inside. Every time.
It's one thing if you're living in a place where the dog is an acre away and you're just being a dick. It's another thing if you live in a densely populated 'hood (.25 to .5 acre lots) and you're letting your dog bark its head off for an hour.

Re: Random Thoughts About Thoughts Random
I also don't understand the people that have dogs to just have them outside 85% of the time.

Went to a funeral in Baltimore. Rabbi rolled up as we were getting there. He was rolling in a Tesla. Something feels wrong about that. Nothing wrong with it but just felt weird...

When I was a kid, my Mother got upset that the Cantor drove a Mercedes.
Mind you, that was like 25 years after the war.

Went to my kids' school to pick them up today (no cellos on the bus) to see that the parking lot, which is routinely over capacity because precious children cannot dare ride the bus, included an illegally parked pick-up truck from the fire department.

Re: Random Thoughts About Thoughts Random
Was Gunpowder's series of presidential biographies on this version of the Swamp, or one of the earlier ones? I'm doing a case involving an Indian land claim, so I have an excuse to research Congressional and Presidential actions from back in the 1880s and 1890s. (For the first time in my life, I have typed the words "Chester A. Arthur.") Anyway, I came across some Congressional debate about free silver and bimetallism, and *still* have no idea what all that was really about, and thought I could benefit from Sean's wisdom.

My mom mailed me a copy of a short story I wrote my junior year of high school. I had just turned 18, and obviously, I'd read a lot of Stephen King.

Ooh, good call. 18-year-old me probably didn’t know that. And I forgot it when rereading it.

Re: Random Thoughts About Thoughts Random
Not bad. I’ve read a lot worse, by adults.
