So the democrats are basically throwing this election now. Tough to beat an incumbent anyways. Even Bill Clinton was supposed to be a sacrificial lamb.brian wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2020 12:31 pmEh, if anything the DNC is probably likely to throw it for Bernie in that specific situation. Whatever conspiracy theories people have about the DNC stacking the deck against Bernie because he's not a Democrat goes 100 times for Bloomberg since he's apparently still a Republican.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
To be clear I don't think they're in the tank for anyone. If they are, they're doing a shit job considering how poorly anyone other than Bernie is doing. I'm just saying there's no way the Dem constituency -- liberal, moderate or otherwise -- is going to allow Bloomberg to be the Dem nominee under any circumstance.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
(Bloomberg's "success" has been with people who are solely obsessed with beating Trump and they're responding to Bloomberg's attacks against him, which makes him largely unique in the Dem field. That's never going to last -- especially once they realize that he's politically as conservative as Trump and that any of the candidates probably roughly have about the same shot to defeat Trump in November and there's no particular advantage with someone who is going to stoop to Trump's name-calling*)
* - With the caveats that I do believe certain candidates should do better against Trump (hence why I support Warren more than Bernie) and that whomever the candidate is had better be prepared to get down in the mud with Trump a little bit from time to time and tool on him for his fake wealth and business failures and the other stuff that obviously really works on him.

Bloomberg's been allowed to vomit his message all over the airwaves without any real focus on his issues surrounding stop and frisk as well as his being against minimum wage increases and having more sexual misconduct allegations against him than trump. Now that he's on the stage, I suspect that will change.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
All the bellyaching about the DNC changing the rules to allow him in this debate misses the point that he's going to get absolutely savaged (and deservedly so) by everyone on stage tonight, which might have been the point all along.Giff wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2020 1:00 pm Bloomberg's been allowed to vomit his message all over the airwaves without any real focus on his issues surrounding stop and frisk as well as his being against minimum wage increases and having more sexual misconduct allegations against him than trump. He's also just getting bigger in the polls based solely on advertisement overspending. No one has voted for him except maybe a write-in? and I agree with you on him actually having to answer to the other candidates.Giff wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2020 1:00 pm Bloomberg's been allowed to vomit his message all over the airwaves without any real focus on his issues surrounding stop and frisk as well as his being against minimum wage increases and having more sexual misconduct allegations against him than trump. Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
Is CNN commenting so lucrative that it pays to run an entire presidential campaign to get in?

I have absolutely no issue with Yang's candidacy or his CNN gig.
Just doesn't register as a con game or shitty behavior in my book. The guy worked his fucking ass off. If he was just trying to pull a Howard Schultz, his book would've been out months ago and he wouldn't have trucked all over Iowa for 6 months straight. Campaigning fucking sucks... Hard. I've only had a few tastes of it, and my shit was relatively local.
You don't put yourself through that to get a part time gig on CNN.

Yeah, I think Occam's Razor should always be that there isn't some evil(?) geniuses pulling the strings, that most people in politics are just as stupid and craven (or probably more so) as the dopes you meet in real life and that conspiracies that involve more than two people are never going to stay secret for very long.DSafetyGuy wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2020 3:40 pmMy experience makes me doubt anything that might be loosely referred to in some corners as a "master plan".brian wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2020 1:02 pmAll the bellyaching about the DNC changing the rules to allow him in this debate misses the point that he's going to get absolutely savaged (and deservedly so) by everyone on stage tonight, which might have been the point all along.Giff wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2020 1:00 pm Bloomberg's been allowed to vomit his message all over the airwaves without any real focus on his issues surrounding stop and frisk as well as his being against minimum wage increases and having more sexual misconduct allegations against him than trump. Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
I don’t think you’re being ageist and I’ll take it further—I think it’s crazy that people are voting to have an 80-year old president, I don’t care who it is. At 80 years old you would be 15 years removed from forced retirement from the board or the executive suite at many companies. Even in sports, coaches start to lose it in the early 70s. There’s just a point where you shouldn’t be making the big decisions anymore. I’m 45 and I’m starting to have senior moments. I realize this doesn’t leave me with many options in this election but it just makes no sense unless you think POTUS is a figurehead.Pruitt wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 8:44 pm Am I ageist to marvel at the fact - and not in a positive way - that 4 of the top 6 Democratic contenders are over 70 (and 3 are WAY over 70)?
I know Bernie has big support amongst the youngsters, but it really is strange. I mean Reagan was just shy of 70 when he was elected and that was pretty damn old. And when he left office he was younger than Biden, Sanders and Bloomberg will be on election day.
Part of the way the Democrats are fucking things up so badly.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
That's one of the problems that the Dems do not have a strong "establishment" that can call the shots. You have individuals on every level making individual decisions. Candidates, top-level campaign staff, grunt-level campaign staff, contributors, and voters. So you get people deciding to run who are way too old, with no one to stop them from running or stop others from backing them financially or voting for them.
Didn't Obama take an implicit swipe at Biden saying that it was time to step back and let the younger folks step up?
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

First debate I've watched, and it's been fantastic. Liz seems to be the clear winner of the first hour. Bernie just behind. Amy third, Joe fourth, Pete fifth, and Bloomberg 197th.

Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
Well in that case, no biggie.
Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
I watched about 1.5 hours in the middle of the debate and man, did Warren kick some ass tonight. Not just Bloomberg's ass, although that was most thorough. Bloomberg was clearly out of his league overall. I thought Bernie did pretty well also - he was effective on both offense and defense. I didn't really like Buttigieg, but I'm guessing his folks thought he did well, since he always maintained composure and he constantly attacked the other candidates. I just don't like Klobuchar at all - she seems so fake to me - well, up to the point where she thought Buttigieg was implying she was dumb and then that smiley facade dropped with a quickness.
Biden was almost as bad as Bloomberg. He just doesn't have it.

Yup. Whoever was advising that, hopefully got punted into the sun. Probably cost her a legit chance at pulling this off. But I've been pro-Warren all along, so bittersweet seeing her finally drop the hammer. Must be what it's like being a Seahawks fan and wondering why they won't just let Russell Wilson do his thing for four quarters...
Re: 2020: The Democratic Presidential Nomination Thread
You know she and her team probably say the phrase "if I could just get Trump 1 on 1 on the stage..." a thousand times a day so when Trump Lite shows up late to the game and stands right next to her...wow. It seemed like she just said "fuck it, I'm ending this dude no matter what" and then she felt the crowd behind her and went full tag-team-partner-on-the-apron-all-match on everyone else.tennbengal wrote: ↑Thu Feb 20, 2020 7:03 am Whatever it takes for EW to do what she did last night. Yep, and even last night, she really tried to shoehorn in the issue of reaching out to minorities in some of her responses in hour two. Solid A grade though, and clear winner last night.

Bloomberg probably had no idea that was coming too. He’s a multi-billionaire with a notoriously quick trigger for firing people and the money to buy off potential critics. It’s probably been like 40 years since he’s actually been criticized by any peers, face-to-face.Johnnie wrote: ↑Thu Feb 20, 2020 8:37 am
