Couldn't find a thread on this very important topic. I guess it was a Swamp of yore

Looking to try something new. I used to drink Knob Creek almost exclusively. I've bought and enjoyed Eagle Rare, Blantons, Bookers and Basil Hayden in the past. I recently tried Angel's Envy and wasn't that big of a fan. Aged in port wood, which I expected to love, bu it was too sweet and overly portish. Actually, I kind of liked it, but it was more of an aperitif or desert treat. Not what I'm looking for in a bourbon. I also bought a bottle of Woodford Reserve a couple years ago, and wasn't into it despite the high praise from you guys.

I like the oak, vanilla and caramel flavors in my bourbon, but not too heavy on the oak where it overpowers everything else. So, what say yinz?

I just got some Henry Mckenna 10 year. Had a taste last night. Liked it, but it wouldn't fit your flavor profile I don't think.

Baker's is a similar bourbon to Knob Creek, but I don't think it's a 101.

The 1792 Ridgemont Reserve is decent and I think it might be right up your alley.

Seconded. Bulleit is great stuff and not horribly expensive. About $25 a fifth, and the bottle is really cool.

after reading reviews and descriptions, Blanton's and Jefferson seem to be a good fit. Anyone ever had Jefferson's? 1792 sounds good, but several people said it tastes like Woodford. Someone also said it used to be called Ridgewood Reserve, but Woodford sued, as the name was similar and it tasted very similar. So many choices...

This is making me think I need to have a good rye in the house. I do enjoy that more than "classic" bourbon or whiskey.

Give the KNob Creek rye a chance. I sampled it once. Ryes aren't my favorite but it was solid.

The Mckenna I got is supposedly a rye and like i said it was decent. Will probably have some on the rocks tonight to really get the flavors.

you're underselling it, ab. at least for the price point, it's really solid.

try the four roses single barrel. excellent value for a single barrel.

i also like the bulleit 10 year. very tasty.

I am taking the cowardly way out. My oarents were looking for something to give me at our all-Jewish Christmas extravaganza at my in-laws. I gave her 4 to choose from, let her surprise me. Blanton's, 1792, Bulleit and Jefferson's made the final cut.

So I made a more concerted effort to taste the mckenna. Solid, but nothing to write home about.

Now I was fortunate enough to receive some Westward whiskey from Oregon from a good friend...this is top shelf stuff. Kinda like scotch and smooth as silk. Very nice to drink and toast the ducks as they try to whoop up on Mack brown. Apparently it's pretty small batch stuff people have been waiting on for a while. And it is worth the wait. From the two glasses I've had, it's a Top 3 whiskey for me.

1792 won the day. I listed Blanton's as my first choice, but the store my Mom went to was sold out. I like it, but it is similar to Woodford, where the oak overpowers. There is a nice flavor at the backend as the oak subsides. I think I like it better than Woodford, but it's been a couple years since I had a bottle. Knob Creek was my sole choice for years, but I wanted to keep trying new brands. I'll be curious to try Knob Creek again, after drinking so many other bourbons. For some reason I got it in my head that Knob Creek is an inferior or unsophisticated option. Kind of in between a Jim Beam and Woodford Reserve. The look of disgust on my whiskey expert's face when I told him Knob Creek was my favorite didn't help dispel that.

For some reason I got it in my head that my whiskey expert is inferior or unsophisticated. The look of disgust on my whiskey expert expert's face when I told him about the look of disgust on my whiskey expert's face when I told him Knob Creek was my favorite didn't help dispel that.

Santa likes you more than me. I've only had rye once, in a Manhattan. How different from from bourbon is rye? I always had bourbon Manhattans, but heard that rye is better. The rye Manhattan was damned good.

I've found Rye to be grassier tasting than bourbon. Although, I did have a nice Rye Sazerac last weekend. That wasn't grassy at all.

I find a bottle of rye to be really nice when I'm getting Bulleit bourbon at trader joe's and I see Bulleit also makes a rye and the bottle perfectly matches the bourbon bottle except for the different color and my OCD takes over and that's why I spent $25 more than I intended to.

I am almost ready to buy another bottle. Looking to try something new. Knob Creek is my usual. Recent bottles include Woodford Reserve, which I wasn't a fan of, Elmer T Lee was nice, but not enough complexity. 1792 tasted a hell of a lot like Woodford. And by recent purchases, I mean the last 3 years. I go through scotch a hell of a lot faster than bourbon. I forgot Eagle Rare. I liked it, but not as much as Knob or Elmer. I was drinking Bulleit at my office party. They brought it to me on ice despite ordering it neat. I took out all the ice, but my friend insisted it was already ruined, a completely different drink before it touches ice. Cold, it tasted like it would be perfect for a Manhattan. Neat, it was completely different. Shocking difference. Good, but not worth buying.

I am not opposed to buying rye instead of bourbon.
