I’ve been meaning to ask this ... could barstool have “bought” his whole PFT persona where he wouldn’t be able to go elsewhere as the same character? Not that it makes it ok, but adds a wrinkle.

Yes, they could have bought the character as intellectual property for an agreed length of time or in perpetuity. They could have then paid him (or someone else) to play the character.
