Anytime some Con wants to suggest that America is a meritocracy, remember to point out that Madison Cawthorn:
* lost the ability to walk because he didn’t use a seat belt,
* didn’t get into his first choice of colleges,
* dropped out of college because he partied too hard,
* was credibly accused of multiple acts of sexual misconduct,
* bragged on social media about visiting Hitler’s summer home, something he described on his bucket list,
* bragged by lying on social media about being a world class athlete,
* tried to start a company that resulted in zero clients, zero employees, and zero revenues, and
* named said company after a white supremacist iconography.
And yet, despite all that, because he’s a straight white male, with literally no personal accomplishments of which to speak of,
Won a popularity contest to be in Congress.

We decided to take a vacation election week to get out of Texas and take our minds off the whole things. A) totally didn't work and B) we stayed smack dab in the middle of that mutherfucker's district.

Lauren Boebert just set off the metal detectors at the Capitol and refused to get swiped by police. When is that ok?? It’s ridiculous.

If actual media companies could treat Ted Cruz the way Seth Rogen is, that'd be greeeaaaattt.

Re: Random Politics
Very disappointed way to start Monday. Trump is going to get away with everything and win in 2024 if he runs isn’t he?

Wow, what a fucking lame copout by SCOTUS. While it might be moot wrt Trump, it is an incredibly important question to answer to set precedence for future Presidents. This just gives a green light to the next wannabe oligarch to cash in on the Presidency, since it takes more than 4 years to get the case decided. Not to mention, the issue of all the lost revue to Trump competitors who lost money due to Trump cashing in on his power as President. I don't know if the cases would have done anything to divest ill gotten profits or just prevent future abuses, so that argument may not hold any water. Just lame to drag that case out until it's no longer relevant. Curious what they would have done if Trump were reelected. Couldn't drag it out for another 4 years, so they probably would have found some miniscule technicality to say there was a lack of standing so they could avoid hearing the matter.

Re: Random Politics
There is now no doubt now Trump will use this as his defense at impeachment and he won’t come close to a conviction. Really gotta wonder if this is why Mitch wanted the hearing pushed back. He can also use this to unite the Repubs and Trump. The Sybian wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 11:15 amWow, what a fucking lame copout by SCOTUS. Re: Random Politics
Realistically, there really wasn't time to get a full hearing together prior to the 20th.
I think, for some reason, a lot of people feel like more time passed from the 6th to the actual inauguration. I heard multiple newscasters talk about the timeframe as "weeks" which to many ears can be 3-4. Gayle King on CBS repeatedly cited 3 weeks have passed until (thankfully) someone on set stepped in and reminded/corrected that it was only two weeks.
You basically have to discount the week it happened... a lot of those lawmakers were in legit shock... And then you have a lot of moving parts getting ready for the change of power in the Senate.
So, no... I don't think there was some big nefarious plot to delay things. It just wasn't going to happen in the 10 day window with everything going on.

Also, I can't imagine a non-ruling on the Emoluments Clause cases having any bearing on the outcome of the impeachment trial.

Yeah, I didn't really want to get into that.

Re: Random Politics
Their non-ruling was due to him not being in office anymore, this will be his same defense in the impeachment. The US has never impeached a non-standing President. Repubs will use this as an excuse not to convict him. It's a total waste of time to even have the hearing. He isn't going to get convicted.Steve of phpBB wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 3:33 pm Also, I can't imagine a non-ruling on the Emoluments Clause cases having any bearing on the outcome of the impeachment trial.

Re: Random Politics
Unless some damning evidence comes out in the next few weeks, I don't think there is a chance he gets convicted, but it does force Republican Senators, on the record, to either side with Trump and defend his calls for insurrection or stand against him and support defending Democracy, so that is very valuable.psunate77 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 4:03 pmTheir non-ruling was due to him not being in office anymore, this will be his same defense in the impeachment. Re: Random Politics
I don't think there was ever a chance they'd convict Trump in the Senate. Republicans will skirt the issue by saying it doesn't matter now that he's not president any more and they just want us all to heal now.
Totally Kafkaesque
Re: Random Politics
Looks like Ron Johnson is considering retiring as well.
I hope Dems have a good candidate in line. Johnson, Burr, Tommey seats are winnable.

Plus, it's really said in a "We tried to ratfuck as hard as possible, but couldn't come through and in the end we lost only because we ran out of time" kind of way.

Re: Random Politics
Yeah, saying "Biden is the President now" is maybe ten percent of what's needed.
Another sixty percent is "And he legitimately won the election."
And the last thirty percent is "And we're sorry we lied about that."

Re: Random Politics
Democratic Senators Manchin and Sinema are assholes.
Dems gotta figure out how to get DC and Puerto Rico statehood to get two more Senate seats. This has been talked about but I believe DC is going to be difficult.
