Watson is said to be interested in Denver.
If I’m the Broncos, I’d give Houston three #1’s and Drew Lock for Watson in a heartbeat.

Got a cohort of RPI alums here at work. As many as 3 or 4 over the years, but down to 2 right now. They were all football players, brought in by one long-time sales guy who is an alum/player. One of those guys was here in the early 2000s and came back to the company last year.
Was just shooting the shit with him on a call before a meeting started, and the SB and hating Brady and the Pats came up. He mentioned that he has to root for the Pats again because his buddy is back there after leaving the Lions. They were in the same frat and he called him his "little brother".
I didn't go there...

brian wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 4:58 pm There's a case to be made the Lions don't take a QB this draft. For starters there should be NFL-ready (or at least ready-ish) QBs in every draft and the Lions are married to Goff for at least two more years. If they don't draft a QB they can fill some holes at other positions (OL, LB, DB) with their two top-40 picks and then punt the QB decision for one more year. If Goff stinks it up in 2021 they'll have two 1st round picks in 2022 including another presumably high one no matter what the Rams do and they can draft a QB to groom to take over in 2023.
The more I think about it and with the potential that Goff still has it might be too soon to think about taking a QB in the 1st round (that said, they might be well-served to try and see how good Holmes' college scouting skills are (it's the main reason they hired him) and see what he can do by taking a flyer on a late-round pick at QB. They likely have to draft a QB somewhere because the current backups are hot trash and don't belong on an NFL roster, so I assume the team would prefer to at least have someone with some potential in the QB room as opposed to just warm bodies.
If Goff Goffs around and goes 7-9, who are the NFL-ready QBs every year around pick 12?
2015: Bortles, Manziel, Bridgewater, Carr
2016: Goff, Wentz, Paxton Lynch
2017: Trubisky, Mahomes, Watson
2018: Mayfield, Darnold, Allen, Rosen, Jackson (similar to this year's draft)
2019: Murray, Jones, Haskins, Lock
2020: Burrow, Tua, Herbert, Love
Alright, so let's say they aren't getting a top 3 pick because I mean, they aren't. That eliminates Bortles, Goff, Wentz, Trubisky, Murray and Burrow.
Last year and 2018 were probably the most analogous years. I had them taking Tua, which would have been a mistake, but the point being is that you have no guarantee of getting a top 5 pick in a QB-heavy draft and Herbert was also there because other QBs were pushing him down. In 2017, they would have struck gold. But in 2015, 2016 and 2019 they are setting their franchise back a few years. This seems to be one of the good QB drafts, and for that reason if I liked one of these guys I would pounce.
Sheeet, the Browns and Niners passed on Mahomes and Watson with the idea of waiting a year or two. Until I have my QB I'm considering them every time they drop to me.

I guess I would just try to avoid being forced to get a QB wherever possible. The Steelers for example passed on Lamar Jackson (they certainly considered taking him) and now what? They have to hope to get lucky.

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
I think the mistake teams make is "reaching" for a QB because they need one instead of trusting the scouting process. If the Lions are absolutely in love with that NDSU kid or Wilson or whomever and he's there at #9, then OK, but I'd rather see them wait a year (or take a chance on a late-round pick lottery ticket) than just take a QB because they think that's the "safe" decision that will placate the fanbase or whatever.
Since we're not privy to what goes on in these front offices, it's hard to say but I'd be willing to bet that most of the really egregiously bad picks in the last few years are from teams talking themselves into overlooking flaws with Bortles or Trubisky or Darnold or Lynch because they "need a QB". Well, the Lions don't really "need a QB", they have a serviceable one for at least the next two years. Goff or no Goff, the best-case scenario for the Lions for the next couple of years are a couple of solid drafts that build towards making a playoff run in 2023.

Bills have a history of this. J.P.Losman, EJ Manuel

You only take QBs you like, obviously. I just don't pass on a guy I like because I want to wait until next year.brian wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05, 2021 11:48 amI think the mistake teams make is "reaching" for a QB because they need one instead of trusting the scouting process. I just started watching guys today and for example I would not take Fields because as of right now I think he has too much Mitch Trubisky in him.

Tough to judge the 90s and early aughts because there weren't a ton of high-quality QBs available...this was before all-year throwing camps for 9 year olds. It seems like somewhere just after Manuel's time was sort of an inflection point where you started to see guys with all the tools coming out every other year.

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
This makes sense but how often is it teams reaching for a need compared to just being wrong/unlucky on the scouting? Hell even Todd McNeigh gets it wrong with predicting qbs and horse arms don't reach.
Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
I've settled on Justin Fields as not enough Cam Newton mixed with too much Mitch Trubisky.

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
That too - I think people put too much stock in missing on the QB without considering that, I mean, is it better to draft a bust defensive end?EdRomero wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05, 2021 12:02 pmThis makes sense but how often is it teams reaching for a need compared to just being wrong/unlucky on the scouting? I think both of those made sense - Losman was a toolsy QB available well beyond where he'd typically be and Manuel was taken in by far the worst draft ever.

I know I don't follow, but I have Eagles fans friends so I'm sort of in touch ... why is annually injured and possibly mentally broken Wentz, coming off a historically bad year, worth a 1st to anyone?
Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
Hell, I would dance in the street if they got a 4th for him. I’d rather someone else have this problem:

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
Who will they be including with Wentz to make it a blockbuster?

Arguahly the better question is why?

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
Would the Eagles throw in a bunch of picks to dump the contract? Also makes their coaching hire seems strange since he appeared to be hired to be Wentz's fixer.
Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
The guy I have the "no 1st rounder" bet with has a lot of twitter ammo today saying the Eagles are getting a 1st +. Seems insane.
Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
I don't get it. Maybe a team really wanted to draft him and feel the Eagles didn't use him right. Or the Eagles are doing an amazing job with the media to drive up the price.

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
Bears QB coach John DeFilippo had the same job in 2016-17 in Philly with Wentz, which is one of the reasons for them to be potential trade partner (the desperation reeking off of GM Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy is another).
Philly won't be throwing in picks. Wentz's contract is roughly 4/$98 for the team that acquires him, which is either a very good deal if he bounces back or an albatross if he doesn't.

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
It's also really only two years. Philly would've paid all the bonuses. Any acquiring team only owes Wentz $23.7M in 2021 and 2022, which is not even in the top 15 of QB salaries. After that they can cut him with no cap penalty, or keep him on for $25.5M for each of the next two seasons. His contract really only hurts the team that signed him to it, the Eagles.DSafetyGuy wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 9:58 amBears QB coach John DeFilippo had the same job in 2016-17 in Philly with Wentz, which is one of the reasons for them to be potential trade partner (the desperation reeking off of GM Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy is another).
