If you want to read a bunch about that shooting and its community, here's one man's twitter feed.

FBI is in town to investigate a series of racially-motivated activities at Syracuse University, including someone AirDropping the Christchurch shooter's manifesto at the campus library last night. There's about ten stories on the main page of the student newspaper website that are tagged under "November hate crimes".

So WSJ has a an article about the wife of one of the writers murdered. He was writing a book about DC area basketball. She finished it.

Re: The Mass Shootings Thread
So far there hasn't been anything here about the recent shootings in Atlanta, but I have some thoughts.
I was reading this story: Accused Gunman Had Visited Massage Parlors He Targeted, Police Say, and it struck me that while the shooter is a self-described 'sex addict', given the repressive church he grew up attending, I'm willing to bet that he had fairly typical sexual urges/needs but the years of hearing that anything outside of marital sex was a sin caused overwhelming guilt. (I know a thing or two about growing up in a repressive church and feeling guilt).
Not to discount the racial aspects (which I'm sure was a factor as well), but it just strikes me that if he had felt ok about emailing his brother or getting on Tinder or even getting a Robert Kraft special, this could have been avoided.
Oh, and don't get me started on the madness that the state of Georgia thinks its just fine for someone to walk into a store and walk out with a high-powered hand gun, but is passing laws to make it harder for the 'WRONG' people to vote.

Oh, that is most definitely a part of it. I read this last night about the Evangelical side of it.
religiondispatches.com wrote: “Purity culture places heavy emphasis on temptation and evil. Pornography is considered evil and something to be eliminated. Given that framing, it’s not surprising that someone might view all sexual ‘temptations’ as evil and needing to be eliminated.” Speaking of Long, Grubbs elaborated, “I would not call this person a ‘victim’ of purity culture, but it is possible that he is a product of it.”

Just such a messed up story.
Re: The Mass Shootings Thread
Thing is guys are getting blasted on the highways here. Seems like the most popular hit method. Shooting up buckhead! Things are out of hand crimewise so this barely make a blip locally. Without knowing, I don't think it was an anti asian deal either. Those spas on cheshire bridge next to the strip clubs and smoke shops not likely on the up and up.

Have the GoFundMe campaigns started yet?DaveInSeattle wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 5:31 pmAmazing how they can bring in mass shooters without a scratch, but have to kneel on a guys throat for 8 minute when he's suspected of passing a fake $20.
Wonder why that might be...

I’m glad I unfollowed any friend who was a Trump fan so I don’t have to see posts about how this is somehow Biden’s fault.

I live in a democratic city with a gun problem. I may have heard that before.

And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Not that it would have definitely stopped this shooting, but still...
Boulder’s assault weapons ban, meant to stop mass shootings, was blocked 10 days before grocery store attack

Re: The Mass Shootings Thread
Is it controversial to say atleast some of these guys are dreaming of the post-shooting notoriety they'll have so maybe taking them into custody shouldn't be in the top 10 goals of law enforcement?

I dunno. Getting frog-marched bloody and half-naked in freezing weather in front of a TV cameras isn't exactly a glamorous outro.
Re: The Mass Shootings Thread
Its not, but I'd like to think atleast some percentage of these wouldn't happen if they knew they weren't coming back out.
Re: The Mass Shootings Thread
Do *most* of them even come out alive? I have the perception that they don't but I don't really know.
There certainly is value in shaking them down for motive, planning, background, etc that you can't get if they're not alive. Also, I'm sure victims' families would rather see justice carried out. (Again just speculating)

Re: The Mass Shootings Thread
I don't even know, maybe I just focus on the ones who do?
See, I'm the total opposite. If anything ever did happen, I'd want the closure of knowing they're dead. The public deification of that Kyle motherfucker or even just me imagining them enjoying their fame while being protected by other white supremacists in prison would drive me insane.
