The Faygo 2-liters in the party store show an extreme commitment to set design. Honestly I've seen this movie at least 50 times and not sure if I could pick anything apart about it despite being filmed in LA area.

A nice bit is how the adults from his life guess things that are in the vicinity of his actual job.

That's a very sad but effective depiction of the mom's condition.

Debbie giving away tickets to see "Palace at Cobo Hall" is an intentional Detroit in-joke regarding Detroit's sports arenas.

I like how they get the angst out of the way first so they can drop the standard rom-com shit and do interesting things.

I admit I am often confused about how movies often depict prom as happening after the school year ends/graduation. Ours were always about 4-6 weeks before the year was a wrap.

I always liked it, but really appreciating now what a well-written movie this is, especially with a four-writer script.

This whole movie is a good example of "a surprising amount of California doesn't look like what people think California looks like."

I guess one negative thing I can say about the movie is how it falls into the trope of making "typical" people out of people who grew up with more money than 98% of Americans.

The building across from Debbie's station has a "No News or Free Press sold here" sign which was not a statement about "fake news" but part of a union boycott at the time because of the papers employing scabs for distribution. Again, a remarkable attention to detail. That labor action lasted like four years or something like that, so that was a common sight for about half a decade.

Every cellphone in a movie actually made the 90s now looks like it was intentionally put there to show that the movie takes place in the 90s.

The Chaka Booku (sp?) bit coming back later during the reunion is my favorite moment in the film. I'll just say it right now. The moment and the soundtrack choice there is perfect.

Is this the same "tacky but in an endearing way" restaurant from Jackie Brown?
By the way, much of the movie's backstory would be invalidated if it took place in the internet age.

Right before they got introduced, my wife asks, "who are the CIA guys? Hank Azaria and...?" Brief discussion follows where she says, "But, it's not Don Cheadle", followed by brief discussion how Don Cheadle would be better.Johnny Carwash wrote: ↑Thu Apr 15, 2021 9:00 pm 50% of the people who see this movie will think the black guy is Don Cheadle.
