Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
I’ve mentioned a friend of my wife’s before in this thread (struggled with long COVID, husband in the Air Force and couldn’t get vaxxed before they deployed him to some unknown Asian location this past spring because he had COVID for Christmas 2020).
Well, she’s got it a third time. Her husband and one of her kids have it, too. Both of them are vaxxed at this point. At a minimum her mom and a cousin are also positive, so seems their Christmas celebration was a spreader event. And that’s two Christmases in a row with COVID for them.

So the two girls who cut their vacation short to avoid COVID tested positive with home tests tonight. One has sore throat and sniffles, while the other has no symptoms. Since I have had contact with positive people, I will quarantine in the house with them for the week which will greatly increase the chances I end up with it. This is fun.

Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
So I realize I haven't updated and I could quote half the things above, but I'll just post anew.
First kid tested positive Thursday, second on Friday, so we just did Christmas morning together figuring we'd all get it. Kids were out playing on Sunday and felt fine. Wife tested positive at home on Monday, but worst symptoms were a scratchy throat and some sniffles. Still negative for me. The whole family got tested on Thursday just to see what's our updated statuses. Kids still tested positive but can still return to school on Monday with a negative home test Sunday, since they haven't shown any symptoms in over a week and were fully vaxxed. Mine still came back negative, but the wife's results never came back for some reason.
I guess this is the best-case scenario, getting it over the break with the most contagious variant, but with the mildest effects or symptoms. Thanks for your concern here and for reading my vent sessions. Stay safe out there everyone in the new year.

So do you get boosters for kids? I think you guys are as good advice as the govt. Seems like no? Yes? School and sports and work will not get us far in the next two weeks uninfected. Kids had shots about 6-7 mos ago. Adults are boosted. Need to know now. Thanks.
Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
Our kids (currently 13 and 15) will get it when eligible.

My daughter (13) is due for the booster. My son (11) just got his 2nd a couple weeks back and is getting it when it’s ready.

Frustrating. Had it out with wife 2x but to no avail. Ended with a shut the fuck up and nonsense about what's in the vaccine. So I cancelled.
I don't see how a third immunocompromised dose today is any different than a booster dose next weekend when (presumably) approved for 12-15 by FDA and ACIP. Except that theres basketball practice in 6 hrs and school and work. I don't think we make it until Saturday uninfected. Definitely not the next 2-3 weeks.
I'll keep it pointed into the crest of the waves.

Old lady and youngest sick since Saturday. They got tested today no results yet. I don’t feel great today so I must be a couple of days behind even if it isn’t omicron. Oldest fine so far but that child has always had the best immune system

Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
My oldest daughter (double vaxxed and boosted) tested positive last night. She was supposed to go to San Diego this morning to visit her boyfriend and meet his parents. So that's out.
The real issue is that she's due to leave for her semester abroad in Italy on the 10th. So...assuming she stays asymptomatic, and can get in to see her doctor to get documentation that she's recovered, she should be able to make her flight still...maybe.
She went to a NYE thing with 5 friends, where 2 of them had recovered from covid, and everyone else had done the rapid tests. So somehow something snuck through. And now the GF and I are worried that we are going to test positive (and we only have 2 home tests left...and getting a test appointment is next to impossible).
What a fucking mess.

I am currently ill with pretty horrible flu like symptoms. Tested positive on 31/12/2021 and awaiting my posted PCR test result. I have had my double jab and booster and am so glad I had them, especially with the non-booster/non-vaccine rates in UK ICU beds at present (60%/90%).
Lots of people have died/are going to die due to algorithms, stupidity and/or Government failure...
The not being able to get LF tests in the US is an odd one (we had a couple of weeks of availability issues pre-Christmas, but generally you can get them free (packs of 7) from the government in the post within two days in the UK.

In the UK:
Income Tax rates and bands
Personal Allowance Up to £12,570: 0%
Basic rate £12,571 to £50,270: 20%
Higher rate £50,271 to £150,000: 40%
Additional rate over £150,000: 45%
We also have National Insurance, which works out as 12% of your wage (roughly on annual earnings over £10,000 and an additional 2% after £50,000).
So roughly I pay 54% tax on all my earnings over £50,000.
We also have huge tax on Petrol 57.95p/litre + VAT (at 20%). Petrol cost around £1.45/litre at the moment, so it is about 55% tax at the pump.
I don't mind the tax we pay in the UK, it is lower than other European countries, but I have no idea how it compares to the US or Canada?

Ha, I started to think of numerous points to respond to Tom, and you're right, it's too depressing. Basically, Republicans have brainwashed too many of us to ever have a good system. So instead of paying taxes to ensure healthcare for all, we pay infinitely more for healthcare to make sure insurance companies rake in enormous profits, so they can donate to politicians who will continue to fuck over the people in the name of corporate profits.
New Jersey government has a program to mail everyone a free PCR test. I got them for when I need it.

Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
It's lower in Canada although we don't have a 0% bracket.
15% on the first $49,020 of taxable income, plus
20.5% on the next $49,020 of taxable income (on the portion of taxable income over 49,020 up to $98,040), plus
26% on the next $53,939 of taxable income (on the portion of taxable income over $98,040 up to $151,978), plus
29% on the next $64,533 of taxable income (on the portion of taxable income over 151,978 up to $216,511), plus
33% of taxable income over $216,511
We don't have national insurance and gas tax is like 10cents per litre. We have a 5% national sales tax.

Do you have capital gains tax (investment income)? 54% is really high. People would devise ways not to be paid in wages if tax was 54%Tom 1860 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 04, 2022 2:59 pm In the UK:

Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
Wouldnt be for me either. And im generally for higher taxes and more equity but higher income tax rates isnt the way to go if there is an out for capital gains. Would exacerbate the problem and a quick google seems like thats whats going on in UK. Arent business owners and management class avoiding income tax by foregoing wages in favor of underpriced assets. Stock options?

Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
In a lot of industries, yes. In the US, we pay 20% tax on capital gains. Get paid in undervalued assets, you pay income tax on the assessed value, then 20% on the sale price minus the assessed value. At least that is my understanding.HaulCitgo wrote: ↑Wed Jan 05, 2022 10:25 am Wouldnt be for me either. Not sure if I saw it here, but DeSantis had been getting killed for disappearing for 3 weeks without a word. Wonder if he just got out of the hospital. His spokesperson initially said he was on vacation, then came out and said he was taking time off to spend with his wife while she goes through breast cancer treatment. RW Twitter lit up the evil hateful Libs for not allowing him to spend time with his wife, despite his own people publicly stating he was on vacation.
