Re: 2021/22 NCAA Basketball
9:05 would have been a decent compromise. I didn't make it through halftime, so I missed the comeback but I slept great, so, it's a win for me. Had it started early enough that the game was back on 15 minutes earlier I think I would have muddled through.
Why won't anyone think of the middle-aged white men these days?

Re: 2021/22 NCAA Basketball
My niece and her husband, who are both Carolina alums, posted a video of their young kids, fully decked out in their Tar Heel gear, sobbing at the end of the game. I commented that they'll always have the win over Duke.
Re: 2021/22 NCAA Basketball
I made it to the end of the game. Sure, I took a nap at around 4 pm so I could make it to the end…
My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Tied with Mel Ott at Number 25 is Miguel Cabrera at 511.
Re: 2021/22 NCAA Basketball
True. Hubert Davis will go down in tarheel lore for those two wins.
Won't be etched in dean dome stone like it would have with a couple of second half buckets but always remembered nonetheless.

Why yes that is La Salle basketball on the front page of ESPN for a non-scandal reason.

Re: 2021/22 NCAA Basketball
Informed speculation (the two dozen people on the basketball message board, 12-15 of which I do not like) is that this is fundraising for the new arena as much as anything on-court. We are or should be on the cusp of being invited to leave the A-10 for a lower league unless we have a major facility renovation and start to put more resources into the program. Dunphy is, by far, our best shot at doing that in the short term.
Re: 2021/22 NCAA Basketball
I appreciate the effort by Dunphy to coach the entire Big 5.

Losing the baseball program was rough.mister d wrote: Tue Apr 05, 2022 6:03 pm Informed speculation (the two dozen people on the basketball message board, 12-15 of which I do not like) is that this is fundraising for the new arena as much as anything on-court. They need to figure something out. New arena may be nice but they need to get the recruits. There was a period when LaSalle had put more players in the NBA than the other Big 5 schools - incl Nova. Short lived but that time did exist.
I joked with a friend that they should merge w/ Acadia (former Beaver College) and build their recruiting back up.
oh shit...
Re: 2021/22 NCAA Basketball
Interesting trivia. Dunphy started his career as assistant for his HS coach. That job was at Army and under Dan Dougherty. A legendary Philly area HS coach. His stint as head coach of Army was between two coaching legends. He succeeded Bobby Knight and preceded Coach K on the Army bench.

Re: 2021/22 NCAA Basketball
Neptune seems like a really good coach but this is tremendous. Really happy.
Re: 2021/22 NCAA Basketball
I remember looking up his age last month and being surprised to learn that he’s 60.
Re: 2021/22 NCAA Basketball
Shouldn't be too hard to stay close to the program when he's coaching the Sixers, right?

Re: 2021/22 NCAA Basketball
Coaching is such a grind these days and he has more money than he could spend in 10 lifetimes, plus I'm sure if he's interested, he could have just about any TV gig he wanted. Given all that, it's not that crazy.

He did a little studio work of CBS during the tournament for a few years after they got bounced.

Yeah, he wasn't bad either. I'm sure he would have his choice of studio jobs if he wanted one.DSafetyGuy wrote: Thu Apr 21, 2022 9:45 am He did a little studio work of CBS during the tournament for a few years after they got bounced.

Yeah, I don't see the NBA happening given he spent two decades at a small-ish Big East school when he could have had, quite literally, any job he wanted in college or the pros. Seems like a dude who is perfectly content with his decisions.

I hear he is involved with a former Villanova Cheerleader.

Re: 2021/22 NCAA Basketball
I love the idea that he evaluated his life, found it fulfilled and decided to just scale back and actually enjoy the many rewards he's earned. I hope that's what this is.
He was arguably the best coach in college basketball, and has been for a decade or so. He seemed like one of the good guys too. So, while good for him, it's obviously bad for college hoops. Maybe Brad Stevens can come back to offset!

I just have a hard time seeing him go to Fox, as they have Big East and he seems like the kind of guy who would avoid commenting about former players and recruits.brian wrote: Thu Apr 21, 2022 9:47 amYeah, he wasn't bad either. Wait....you mean he isn't announcing he's retiring at the end of NEXT year? He's avoiding the year long ESPN slurpfest and the endless camera shots of him walking through the back halls of arenas holding his wife's hand?

Re: 2021/22 NCAA Basketball
He got graded as a late second round pick, so he went back to school. He's doing a ton of ads for local Spokane businesses, so he's cashing in on the NIL stuff.
He's a great college player, but his game doesn't translate to the NBA (he can't really shoot threes, and his not big enough to be a center).

Hunter Dickinson is in the same boat, but for slightly different reasons (by far, the biggest issue is footwork on D -- he's gonna get pulled out to cover and just roasted every time.)

Re: 2021/22 NCAA Basketball
Someone on my Twitter feed posted a picture of the 1991 All American list and it was notable not only for some huge names - Shaq, Larry Johnson, Laettner, Mourning, Mutombo, Kenny Anderson, etc. - but also in that in the 5 AA teams, there were no freshman and only 2 sophomores. Things have changed greatly in the last 30 years!
But, I think NIL might shift things back a bit. We're already seeing accomplished college players turning down a chance at the NBA (or Europe) to stay in college because they can make money either way. Maybe college still isn't as much money, but it can be substantial, and college is surely more fun than the G League.

LUC!!! (Longley!)
Funny how UNM is on the leaderboard for most NBA champs won by former players simply because of Luc and Coop.

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

Shaq would one day diss 2/5th of the second team in a single verse of "What's Up Doc?"

Re: 2021/22 NCAA Basketball
It's funny that Duke only got one AA that year. I would not have guessed that. I'd say Brian Shorter is least know of those players. Don't remember him at all. Mark Randall at least led Kansas to the title game.
I checked the ACC and saw that Walt Williams didn't make any All-ACC teams. Turns out he only played 17 games, but they still picked him for 2nd team AA. Kenny Anderson scored 26 ppg and didn't lead the conference; Rodney Monroe scored 27 ppg. Wild year.
