First time I’m watching an episode of No Reservations since and he’s just such a massive loss. Attitude of the right and heart of the left and you’d have to work to not see it’s not a coin flip.

Just watched the 'Roadrunner' doc on CNN. (They had been advertising it for a few Sunday nights, but that pesky Russia/Ukraine war kept preempting it.) It's worth watching. As I've said before in many other threads, I care more about writers/directors than onscreen talent. But occasionally, I'm drawn to a face or a voice. With Bourdain, I get all of it. Man, I miss him.

Great soundtrack, by the way. A Television song early on. Then David Chang played Bourdain's favorite song, said that it was 'a junkie song' as they talked about Bourdain's heroin use. I knew the song, but didn't recognize it right away. No onscreen credit, so I had to look it up. The Brian Jonestown Massacre! Wow, that brings back memories.

A few musician cameos, including Allison Mosshart. She was in The Dead Weather, which featured Jack White on drums. I caught White's drumstick in Columbus with Bensell standing next to me. Yep, memories.

Rewatching the No Reaervations SF episode where he goes to Cosentino’s restaurant and knowing both Bourdain and that restaurant are gone really sucks.



(We got to meet Cosentino there and talk for a few minutes along with the people next to us and the way he handled their camera (it was ~2009) fucking up was one of those very clear “this is a good person” moments. Hate what happened to him on that stupid challenge eating show.)

Love that this got bumped, since I was away from Swampland when this happened, and Bourdain might be on my list of Top 5 people you'd want to play poker / eat dinner with. He didn't just influence the way I view food, but also travel. And to an extent, his approach to life.

His suicide probably hit me harder than anyone's death who I didn't personally know.

Visited Les Halles not long after his death when it was covered in notes. Beautiful tributes. Will try to find a couple of photos.

FWIW, I went to Bourdain's "secret" restaurant where he ate the best cacio e pepe (and some of the best pasta) he said he had ever eaten. It's called Sparita.

It's a fine restaurant in the very cool Trastevere neighborhood of Rome. And the dish was very good. But probably not one of the top 5 pasta dishes I ate while I was there. My wife ordered the chicory salad with anchovy sauce, which was amazing.

Most of the restaurant was ordering the cacio e pepe, and at least half the diners were American (which was rare, as we barely heard any Americans in Rome ... not surprising I guess, given that it's January).

No regrets going there. It was a very good meal, was a nice connection to Bourdain, and brought us into a really cool neighborhood away from the fray.

That's the 'Disney' moment where you just appreciate where you are, and why you are there, and then yeah, it is what it is.
