Re: Vin Scully
I’ll always associate him with this vignette, which I watched with a law school friend from LA.
"He swore fluently, obscenely, and without repeating himself for just over a minute."

And of course one of the the greatest jinxes ever is on that clip.

Re: Vin Scully
He was the best. There's him. And then everybody else trailing far, far behind. And this is why:
10+ years ago when I was stationed at Osan AB I was at the chow hall eating along with maybe a dozen other folks. On the TV was AFN sports with a random Dodgers game on and Scully was the announcer.
At some point I kind of look around and every single person in the chow hall was fixated on the game. Like forks and knives in hand, but not focusing on their meal. Not because anything was happening of note, but Scully just had that magic. The voice. The storytelling. The ease of his broadcasting. Everything.
I look at the guy closest to me and he says something to the effect of "This announcer really pulls you in, doesn't he? Everyone's watching the game."
Yup. So weird that I randomly remember a thing like that, but that's Vin Scully.
RIP.

Such a good voice. Throat Goat.

Re: Vin Scully
When Vin started his career in 1950, he handled radio calls not only for regular season games, but spring training as well. He therefore handled spring training games between the then-Brooklyn Dodgers and the then-Philadelphia Athletics, who had their spring training in West Palm Beach at the time. The Athletics were managed by Connie Mack, who founded the team in 1901, but he also played, as a catcher primarily, between 1886 and 1896. Connie Mack, in fact, is purported to be the reason why catching a foul tip only results in an out if the batter has two strikes on him.
So to sum up, Vin Scully, an announcer we all listened to and adored, is only one degree of separation from baseball played in 1886, i.e. Grover Cleveland's first term as President.
Rest in Peace, Vin. Baseball is a little worse today with you not in it.

It's sad to lose someone that seems to have been universally loved in the sports world.

It's amazing to see the widespread reaction on Twitter to his death. People who never tweet about sports are all posting about how much they loved Vin.Giff wrote: Wed Aug 03, 2022 9:15 am It's sad to lose someone that seems to have been universally loved in the sports world.

Sorry, but Nancy Reagan already had that nickname locked down.
Re: Vin Scully
Vin Scully is a legend and belongs on the Mount Rushmore of announcers for any sport, but give me Ernie Harwell any day.

Coming from a place where I grew up with Harry Kalas, the greatest has now left the building. RIP, Vin.

I’ll never forget where I was when I heard the news about Harry. I’m sure a lot of people in the Delaware Valley can say the same thing.Reaper wrote: Wed Aug 03, 2022 2:31 pm Coming from a place where I grew up with Harry Kalas, the greatest has now left the building. RIP, Vin.

Scully’s reach went well beyond beyond LA and for good reason. Glad I was able to hear some of what he called. RIP.
Re: Vin Scully
Good timing that his Dodgers are facing their archrivals tonight.

Not much of a rivalry this season. The Dodgers have owned the Giants.L-Jam3 wrote: Wed Aug 03, 2022 8:32 pm Good timing that his Dodgers are facing their archrivals tonight.

That doesn't still exist there, right?? I tend to watch that tournament because I've walked the course and played it on EA a bunch. Don't remember that little doozy in my physical and virtual travel around the course.

I'm surprised they don't also have a windmill on the green, as you try to putt it into the clown's mouth.A_B wrote: Thu Aug 04, 2022 11:51 amIt's not as penal now, but it's still there.Nonlinear FC wrote: Thu Aug 04, 2022 11:40 am That doesn't still exist there, right??
