And now they fall behind on the most direct goal of all time. This game couldn’t be more Canadian if it was riding a fucking moose.
Re: World Cup 2022 - Qatar
Canada was badly let down by their two biggest stars and their all-time scorer. Fuck.

yup but they can take confidence going into the next 2 matches after that performance

Re: World Cup 2022 - Qatar
Yes they can. Needed to switch up in second half. Not likely to beat courtois on 12yd headers. Larin hit it clean and not even close
Re: World Cup 2022 - Qatar
Oh man did he look bad.
But Degen's right - Canada certainly belongs out there.
Also, Belgium looked pretty average. Not a team that will strike much fear into the other contenders

Re: World Cup 2022 - Qatar
Funny that both USA and Canada looked outstanding in their first halves but neither won their game.

They are doing it wrong. Need to do it the Saudi and Japan way.

If we go back 4 years, I'm pretty sure we talked about the fact that 2018 was Belgium's last shot to hoist the Cup with that generation. DeBruyne, for example, is clearly pushing his limits and that was the first game of the tournament. And they really miss the brilliance of Fellaini building and creating out of the middle.

Landon is a terrible commentator. So many times Ian Darke will set him up for something, and then just....nothing.

They have bad hair and didn’t help my tournament pool chances with that draw.

Ronaldo was robbed of a goal. Ref should have let that go and let VAR decide because I don't think that was a foul at all.

And as much as I love Alderweireld and Vertonghen (former Spurs stalwarts), they are old. Watching Wales-Iran, and one nation’s fan base found their supply of vuvuzelas. I miss South Africa.

Re: World Cup 2022 - Qatar
Usa - Iran is going to be a wild game regardless of today's result
Re: World Cup 2022 - Qatar
Well that *should* allow the USA to play without much pressure tonight, at least at first. I’m not sure I’d want to get too far behind Wales on GD, but they can play without fear of losing at least.
Re: World Cup 2022 - Qatar
Everyone in the world can fuck off...
I'll be back in January 2023, unlike Wales, who will be back in 2087.
Also, thank you Gareth Bale, Christ Gunter, Aaron Ramsey, Joe Allen and Wayne Hennessey for allowing us to dream.

Re: World Cup 2022 - Qatar
Four USA players on yellows today. In order of importance to the Iran game, I’d rank them as Wes, [huge gap], Acosta, Dest, Ream. Wes should sit today. This is the kind of game he loves, which is exactly why he should sit. Maybe play him if tied after 70 minutes. Would rather see Aaronson in that spot acting as a pest anyway.
Re: World Cup 2022 - Qatar
I’m confused on why people on Twitter think this is a bad result for USA.

I was thinking same thing.
Hold on, I'm trying to see if Jack London ever gets this fire built or not.
Re: World Cup 2022 - Qatar
I know it’s worse than a draw, but also waaaaaaay better than a Wales win, right?

Re: World Cup 2022 - Qatar
Me three. I get why 0-0 would have been better, but would people rather have to rely on the England/Wales result?

As is well-known*, I'm not on Twitter.
You guys talking about ppl thinking this is a bad result is a good example as to why I'm not on Twitter. Fucking mororns.
* - No one cares if I'm Twitter or not.
ETA - You want the other teams in your group to catch L's. Period. You now have multiple roads to advancing, including two draws. Pull a result today and you are on easy street. My concern is that playing for a draw against a desperate team is not something we do well... At all.

Re: World Cup 2022 - Qatar
Assume a T or L today, the US has to win against Iran. The last win for the US at 5-0 over Grenada in June and the last result against somebody good was a dos-a-cero more than 365 days ago.
Re: World Cup 2022 - Qatar
Are people saying that? A 2-0 loss or better today and we’re win-and-through on Tuesday. That’s infinitely better than what we faced going to bed last night.

First half version of the US against Wales next Tuesday is a W against Iran.

BTW, anyone watching this second half of Qatar - Senegal...
THIS is the version of Qatar that folks expected. I get that Senegal has taken their foot off, but still... Qatar are not a bad squad when they hit feet and stop panicking so much.

Re: World Cup 2022 - Qatar
Since we are discussing Twitter and the World Cup… I had an interaction on Twitter with a guy from Algeria. I was bitching right before the tournament started that Qatar had banned beer only two days before the WC began, and this other fellow was defending it. The interaction ended quickly and amicably. But the funny end result now is that Twitter regularly feeds me “trending topics in Algeria”.

the algorithm seems like it's going to get worse and worse
it still is the best place to get news and real-time analysis and will probably be that for the near future. but man, it's hard to see how the user experience isn't going to keep getting worse

Re: World Cup 2022 - Qatar
Man, I wasn't as dialed into the last WC (for obvious reasons), so I want to present that significant caveat, but...
Man, even the missed shot in this year's tourney are incredible. I've seen most of every game (ffwd though the 5am games, catch tend of the 7, watch the 2 others "live.") The quality on display is off the charts. There are a bunch of teams that are, I'm sure, surprising a lot of folks. Not just with the results, but with just how fun they are to watch. Japan, Ecuador, Canada (1st half, at least) and Senegal top the list for me. (Though, we all know CAN can be fun, and we talked about Japan the other day.) I was not expecting SEN to be as good as they are... just not familiar.
