Hoffstetter is my one "I saw him when" guy. A friend invited me out to his show 5-10 years ago in a tiny dive bar near Busch Gardens. Couldn't have been more than 30 in the audience. Dude's gotten pretty big online.

So they've resorted to just reenacting viral videos and repeating the joke in 8 different ways.
Totally Kafkaesque

Re: Comedy...stand-up and otherwise...
It's actually going back to their sweet spot of just taking something silly like this and blowing it up like that. I had a post on that skit teed up but got pulled into work stuff.
When I saw what they were doing I paused it and showed my wife the viral video (ffwd'ing through the alphabet after a bit) and she died when she saw the original video. Then I played the skit and she was crying laughing. I mean, I was too, but I always love when she loses it (great laugh).
Anyways, I think SNL tries a range of stuff and obviously it doesn't all hit. But sometimes a goofy premise is enough.
I Drive a Dodge Stratus! is a weak/thin premise. Still cracks me up watching today.

This is more like "i can see Russia from my house" or chevy chase falling a lot as jimmy carter. It's cheap, but they land a lot.

Re: Comedy...stand-up and otherwise...
That was all in the delivery. Such a stupid skit, but I chuckled just thinking about Will Ferrell delivering that line. Saw a Stratus on the road recently and yelled "he drives a Dodge Stratus." Didn't bother to explain it to my daughter, so she just thinks I'm weird or had a mini-stroke.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Tue Jan 24, 2023 4:32 pm

And I gotta be a pedantic prick, Chevy played Gerald Ford, not Carter.

Well, it's not all that pedantic because the joke with Ford was that even though he was a UM footballer, he (apparently) was pretty clumsy.
I'm pretty sure it was because of a knee injury, but I don't feel like looking it up.

Jimmy Carter's great moment on SNL was getting irradiated from the Pepsi Syndrome and becoming enormous.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Nah...it was the skit "Ask President Carter"...where he talks down the teenager on Acid.Steve of phpBB wrote: ↑Tue Jan 24, 2023 5:06 pm Jimmy Carter's great moment on SNL was getting irradiated from the Pepsi Syndrome and becoming enormous.
Jimmy Carter:
Just remember you're a living organism on this planet, and you're very safe. You've just taken a heavy drug. Relax, stay inside, and listen to some music. Do you have any Allman Brothers?
Peter:
[on the phone] Yes, I do, sir. Everything is okay, huh Jimmy?
Jimmy Carter:
It sure is, Peter. You know, I'm against drug use myself, but I'm not going to lay that on you right now. Just mellow out the best you can, okay?

That was hilarious. While I respected and liked the work that Trevor Noah did, he rarely made me actually laugh. Ronny Chieng makes me laugh.

I've never seen Hasan Minhaj before his hosting gig this week on TDS. He's a little too manic for my tastes. Brother needs to check his Adderall script.

Never? He was a correspondent on the Daily Show back in the late Jon Stewart years. Good, but never the best one.

Re: Comedy...stand-up and otherwise...
The guest hosts have been interesting
I never connected with Trevor Noah, but respected his work. Just not my style.
I really did not like Leslie J's guest week. Just getting yelled at is not funny.
D.L. Hughley was pretty good.
Chelsea Handler is not my cup of tea
Wanda S is hit or miss
Hasan M was very good as a correspondent back in the day. Have not really watched much of his stuff since leaving the Daily Show.
Kal Penn and Al Franken could be VERY good
John Leguizamo and Marylon Waynes are probably bad fits
Ronnie Chang is great as a correspondent.

Re: Comedy...stand-up and otherwise...
Patriot Act (mentioned in the clip with Chieng above) was really good. It's a shame he only got one season on it. I've watched his standup special and his hosting of the Correspondents Dinner and both were top notch. He's been the best of the co-hosts so far IMHO, just a tinge above Sarah Silverman. He definitely smacks the desk too often and too hard though, so maybe cut that back a bit. I hope they give him a shot at the permanent gig.

I never really watched the Daily Show until the pandemic. Just had other shit to watch. I’m not really a fan of late night. It’s my blind spot.

Chris Rock's Selective Outrage was...fine. He had a few good jokes (and finally broke his silence on Will Smith), but I didn't laugh that much.
Andrew Santino's Cheeseburger was hilarious. Several laugh out loud moments in that one.
