And her story turned out to be all about me, and her, and our relationship over the years, and how I did my best to instill the love of being active and outdoors to both her and her sister. And, how I tried to make sure they understand the whole "food is love" ethos, making sure we always sat down and ate meals together, and that I did my best to make good food for them. And then how that all related to her eating disorders, and how's she learned to manage that (she's doing so much better with it all now).

And...gotta be honest...made me feel conflicted. Like on one hand it made me sound like the best parent in the world (he took us hiking! skiing! sailing! cycling! and made us lasagna! and tacos!)...and on the other, like NOT the best parent in the world (he made us go hiking! skiing! sailing! cycling! and made us lasagna! and tacos!).

But it was pretty amazing to hear her talk about all of this so openly and honestly, and that she wanted to make sure I was included. And, I took note that she did not talk at all about her mother (my GF got mentioned a few times) and that her mom was not present at the Zoom call.
Didn't your wife try to start WWIII over you making tacos? I think you can safely blame your wife for any and all psychological issues your kids may face. It's great that she wanted to share her story with you.
Yes...yes she did call Child Protective Services on me for what I was feeding my girls (beef tacos, in this case). I'm glad that didn't make it into the story last night (I actually don't know if my daughters know about the CPS part of that story).

After thinking about it all day, I'm definitely going to take it as a parenting win. She did a great job presenting it, and my younger daughter texted me saying that she was sitting in the back row sobbing during the whole thing.

Thanks man...and to everyone else for all the kind words. Yeah, its been quite a journey.

About 3 minutes into her story, I turned to the GF and said "this is gonna turn me into a blubbering idiot, I know it". It wasn't that bad, but it definitely got me in the feels.

Not my kid, but daughter of a family in town we are friends with and father runs the Town travel soccer program just got capped for the England Women's U16 team this week. She was called into a camp earlier in the year and yesterday they posted a bunch of pics of her in uniform and her jersey hanging in the St. George's Park (England National Team training center) locker room. They moved to the US when the girl was about 4 yo. Since she was 7 or 8, everyone joked asking if she would play for the US team or England, so it's crazy to actually see it happen now (her parents haven't become citizens, and they get teased that this keeps their daughter ineligible for the US team.

I had always been excited to see my daughter play with her in high school as they go to a lot of the same camps and clinics and my daughter always idolized her, but she took a scholarship to a prep school to play soccer there. Seems crazy to me all the private school sports scholarships, but they won the State Championship this year, and another girl on the team played for the US in the U17 World Cup. She scored the only US goal in the game I watched.

Bummer for my oldest daughter...she was supposed to start her "real" job in September at West Monroe, a business consulting firm. But yesterday she got an email saying they are delaying the start dates for all the the new hires until March, 2024 due to economic conditions.

She's bummed, but I told her that at least they didn't cancel the offer completely (which may still happen, unfortunately) and that she's still got her trip to Israel lined up for the summer, and she'll have a place to live with us for as long as she needs, and she can get a temp gig working at a restaurant or a bar or a brewery or something until she finds something else.

Fuck a bummer. You big time enough to make offers a year in advance you also big time enough to honor them. Who the hell would accept an offer and stop interviewing with a company that just declines to honor. Kinda tough to go find another one after the hiring is done. This is barely a recession. What are they gonna do when the economy actually declines? What the internets are built for. They should feel that one for the next several entry level hiring cycles.

That sucks. I mean, it's brutal when you're an old guy and a job offer is rescinded, but for a kid just starting out it really hurts.

(Happened to my daughter. Two months later she got a better gig)

Older daughter ran her first half-marathon yesterday...and ended up 11th for women, and won her age group (20-24), finishing in 1:43:54. She was pretty psyched, although she hadn't realized she had won anything and had gone home before they did the awards.

to recap to those just joining my stream of consciousness ...
17 y.o junior currently looking to get recruited to run track in college.. diagnosed w adhd and a total space cadet when it comes to school.. so yeah, better run track! (some interest at D2 and D3.. needs 5-10 secs less for D1)
nearly 19 month old adorable kid who is constatly attached to me .. because...his mom (yes the same mom for all three).. is due to deliver our little girl in 35 days.
we... we graduated hs in 89 and 90
everyone we know is looking to move south and slow down or making their travel plans
at the daycare, i'm the oldest guy picking up by far, at least 15yrs.. just sunday afternoon i put on the toddler seat on the bike (which wont' get used until july now)
but they're awesome even though i'm going to have to keep working because of them, and its not like i was going to play golf all the time anyway (although i just might break 100 regularly if i did)

Daughter graduated yesterday...summa cum laude.

Hot take: College graduations are WAY TOO FUCKING LONG. 4 1/2 hours is too fucking long.

A woman in the graduating class had a seizure during the ceremony as well....they had to stop things and get the EMT's and put her on a stretcher. That didn't help either (she's ok).

Congrats! I got in an argument with my parents at my college graduation as I didn't want to attend the big ceremony. Class of 4000-5000, started really early in the morning and I'd heard it just drags on. After attending smaller ceremonies for both majors and an honor society, my parents agreed they were done and didn't want to go to the big ceremony.

The weird, no one really knew who was on it, graduation committee graced us with Lee Iacocca as our graduating speaker. Never has a group of hungover coeds ever been so "WTF? Please stop talking!" than our group of graduating seniors. It was hilarious, frankly. We started humming popular songs at one point, trying to give him the hint to STFU and let as walk the stage and go have an awkward dinner with our parents fergawdsake.
